ABSTRACT
The present study is about the factors affecting STEM students’ school and course
choice in Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation- Candelaria, Inc. which is used as
predictor of the number of nursing enrollees in the university for the next academic years.
It has three purposes - (1) to identify the factors affecting STEM students’ school and
course choice, (2) to know their perceptions towards nursing course, and (3) to see how could
these factors might affect the number of nursing enrollees in MSEUF-CI. Furthermore, the
researchers aim to make the school administration aware to these things so that they could
look for ways to increase nursing enrollment in the university.
The respondents of the study were 180 STEM students of MSEUF-CI which were
selected through stratified sampling method. They were given questionnaires intended to
know their school and course choice and the factors behind it; perceptions to the nursing
course; and agreement or disagreement to possible ways that the school administration may
adapt to increase nursing enrollment.
The study revealed that 21 students will take Nursing. On the other hand, 33 students
prefer to enroll in MSEUFCI. These frequencies were low yet still managed to be on top 3
and 2 respectively in STEM students’ varied responses. Aside from this, it is revealed that
having improved financial aid programs will be a very influential way to increase the number
of nursing enrollees in MSEUF-CI according to the respondents having the WAM of 3.46
which is verbally equivalent to Very Influential.

CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM
Introduction
Students graduating from high schools might have uncertainties with respect to the
possible college university they might enter and what course they would pursue there
(Ramirez & Dizon, 2014). Several factors may affect his/her decision about this like the
group of people the student lives with and also the place where he/she lives in. With that,
private academic institutions may take chance to offer educational services that suits their
clients’ necessities. In These institutions considers who are the possible clients and their
demands in shaping the system of educational programs they would offer in their schools. In
addition, current economic trend is also being considered (HMLIAR & Madzik, 2013).
Doing so, would help these universities in maintaining their good reputation in the eyes of
their prospective clients.
Nursing has been a high-demand job globally during years before 2000. Apparently,
it is the reason why fresh nursing graduates here in the Philippines during those times easily
find nursing job opportunities overseas. They receive good salaries in exchange for their
diligence in the medical workplace. For this reason, it resulted to the upsurge of nursing
enrollees among universities. However, this sudden inclination resulted to surplus of
graduates as medical industry can no longer absorb all of them. In light of this, the admission
of freshmen taking nursing course in Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation- Candelaria,
Incorporated is currently low. There are several possible causes on why this circumstance
happens. With that, it is the mission of this research paper to know find the factors behind
this occurrence.
Research Problem
The researchers empirically observed how the present number of freshmen students
taking nursing course in Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation- Candelaria, Incorporated
remained low. However, there is no existing knowledge why this situation happens so.
Therefore, it is important to address this problem to let the school administration have basis
when it comes to possible action to be made in coping up with the mentioned situation.
Research Objective
The main objective of this research is to know the factors affecting the number of
nursing enrollees in Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation- Candelaria, Incorporated
anchored to its senior high school STEM students' school and course choice.
In 1999, there are 5,672 nursing students graduated in the Philippines. The number of
graduates continually rise to 14,383 in 2004, and 34,589 in 2005 (The Philippine Star, 2008).
In addition to that, academic year 2011-2012 produced 86,816 graduates from 176,646
enrolled nursing students (Philippine Daily Inquirer, 2013). This growth seen in the national
level has led Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation – Candelaria, Inc. to offer nursing
course in the year 2002. It was in 2006 when it produced its first batch of nursing graduates.
United States of America and United Kingdom came to be the top destinations of
Filipino nurses because they posed high demand for this discipline. This resulted in increase
in number of nursing schools producing nursing graduates. However, despite the continuous
growth of nursing enrollees in the Philippines, the demand for nurses abroad began to decline
in 2006 because of the changes in the immigration policies in United States of America while
the United Kingdom prioritized their own citizens (The Philippine Star, 2008). With this,
Philippine Regulatory Commission had an estimation that the Philippines produced a surplus
of graduates and about 300,000 Filipino nurses became underemployed (GMA News Online,
2012). This consequently led to shut down of some nursing schools over the country,
lessening the number nursing enrollees in those areas. Though Manuel S. Enverga University
Foundation – Candelaria, Incorporated still offers nursing course, it has been observed that
the number of nursing enrollees of the university continues in declining. This pushed the
researchers to know the factors that affect the number of nursing enrollees in MSEUFCI by
knowing the perceptions of the prospective enrollees which is its senior high school STEM
students to the nursing course as well as their school and course choice.
Theoretical Framework
This study was supported with theories, models, and studies related to the declining
of nursing students in Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation Candelaria Inc.
Kolb's Learning Styles and Experiential Learning Cycle was developed by David
Kolb (1984). Kolb's theory has two levels: a four stage cycle of learning and the four separate
learning styles. Kolb's theory speaks of the process of a learners' internal cognitive. He states
that the things and concepts that someone will learn is applicable for some instances in life.
His theory is an encouragement to gain and create an idea from the transformation of
Lusico and O’dell (2010), states Integration of theory and practice: Experiential
Learning Theory and Nursing Education that the limited clinical facilities and a shortage of
nurse faculty are some of the factors that affects the opportunities to provide critical thinking
experiences in clinical settings.
In his theory, the lack of facilities and nurse faculty are some of the factors of the
declining of nursing students which is likely the same with Manuel S. Enverga University
Foundation Candelaria Inc. Some students, specially the nursing students are looking for a
school which has more clinical facilities and nurse faculty and making it their basis or the
standards of the school they will be attended.
At present, the researchers have witnessed how the number of nursing enrollees in
Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation- Candelaria, Incorporated remained evidently low.
It is despite the fact that nursing laboratories and teaching faculty is present in the said
university. However, there are no existing studies about probable reasons behind the
occurrence that could have been useful in addressing the situation. Because of this, the
researchers arrived to the following questions below to describe the nature of the problem in
this study.
b. How do personal, peer and family factors affect STEM students’ perception towards
nursing course?
c. What are the STEM students’ basis in choosing a university to enroll in?
d. What are the strategies that could possibly influence STEM students to positively affect
the number of nursing enrollees in MSEUFCI?
Conceptual Framework
The research paradigm shows the following factors that might affect MSEUF-CI’s
STEM student’s school and course prederences. These are the personal, peer, family, and
school factors. These factors serve as the independent variable that can affect the dependent
variable of the study which is the number of nursing enrollees in Manuel s, Enverga
University Foundation-Candelaria, Inc. The said factors will be used as predictor on whether
there would be possible increase or decrease in number of nursing enrollees in the said
university.
This study that aims to know the factors affecting the number of nursing enrollees in
MSEUFCI as perceived by its senior high school STEM students is significant to the
following:
To the faculty
This will help MSEUFCI's nursing educators to develop their existing teaching
strategies in order to cope up more efficiently with the nursing enrollees' expectations and
learning needs.
To the administration
This study will let the administration of MSEUFCI know why the number of college
enrollees who were about to take nursing course in the said university continues to decline.
The administration can make use of this study as a basis for possible changes to be made in
the system for developmental purposes that could help them increase the number of nursing
enrollees in MSEUFCI in the future.
Future researchers will benefit from this study since this could serve as a reference to
those who would make further studies about the topic.
The scope of this study is about the factors that affect the declining rate of nursing
enrollees at Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation Candelaria Inc. The study will include
the number of nursing enrollees of the previous years until now (2002-2018). The research
sample is composed of 328 grade 11 and grade 12 Science and Technology, Engineering
Mathematics (STEM) students of the said campus. The primary data gathering method used
was survey to determine their perspective regarding this study. Through the use of checklist,
the data about the problem will be obtained.
Definition of Terms
Nursing- the job of taking care of people who are sick, injured, or old
CHAPTER II
This study is supported with previous studies and literatures that describe the situation
of nursing education in the Philippines as well as the factors affecting students’ school and
course choice. In relation with this, this would help explain how STEM students’ school and
course preferences might possibly affect their perceptions towards nursing education in
Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation- Candelaria, Incorporated that might affect the
admission rate for that particular course in that particular university.
According to Ramirez & Dizon (as cited in Laguador et al., 2015), secondary student
graduates may be uncertain of what school will they enroll and what course will they prefer
to take there. Uncertainty is also observed among them when talking about their possible
career after their college education. Nonetheless, Laura (2016) maintained that a student must
consider his/ her interests in choosing a course.
Given the situation above, it is essential to clear that every Filipino individual is
entitled to right to choose his/her own career. It is written in the 1987 Constitution of the
Philippines, "(3) Every citizen has a right to select a profession of course of study, subject to
fair, reasonable and equitable admission and academic requirements (Art XIV, Sec. 5[3].).”
De Leon (2002) cleared that law has the power to define or supervise those requirements.
With this, no student shall be coerced to enter a certain college university and career.
On the other hand, there are factors that might affect someone’s school and career
preferences.
Kolb (1984) wrote, “Learning is a process whereby knowledge is created through the
transformation of experience,” (p. 38). In his experiential learning theory, the experiential
learning cycle is composed of four stages: the experience, reflection, conceptualization, and
tests. Effective learning only occurs when a learner can execute all four stages of the model.
He also added that new experiences will help anyone to develop new knowledge, skills, and
concepts.
This theory is tested by having an actual application. Lisk and O’dell (2010) wrote in
Integration of theory and practice experiential learning theory and nursing education about
how Kolb’s experiential learning theory became the central basis for chosen methods used to
teach nursing students during the 15-week semester where those chosen methods are
expected to develop critical thinking among students. The program followed the learning
cycle created by Kolb by providing first-hand experiences through utilization of laboratory
manikins representing patients, conducting conferences done weekly after varied patient-
nurse situations encountered to serve as reflection, pushed students to draw and apply the
found connections between memorized contexts to actual skill performances to harness
abstract conceptualization, and let students to think critically and do tough decision-making
during scenario based laboratory skill tests to apply active experimentation. Results of the
application of the theory in teaching nursing discipline led them to positive conclusion that
Kolb’s experiential learning theory is effective in maximizing nursing students’ capability of
learning.
facilitate that way of learning. The researchers see it as one of the possible factors that might
affect student’s school and course choice.
According to Ban Ki-moon (as cited in Slade, 2016), every child must be in school,
they should be productive citizens and be ready to lead the future and to be able to do that,
the quality of schools must improve. The meaning of quality education is to teach the
students in becoming an active and productive member of society. A quality education
concentrates on the students’ mental, emotional, physical, social, and cognitive development
because it is not just for testing, instead it prepares the child for life. Also, it provides
resources and direct policy, and provides outcomes needed for individuals, communities, and
societies that supports and ensures that each student is healthy and safe. A quality education
is supported by three key pillars: ensuring access to quality teachers, providing use of quality
learning tools and professional development, and the establishment of safe and supportive
quality learning environments. A quality education is an education that is inclusive and
structured to know the potential of a child or student regardless of any status.
Since the nursing discipline is anchored to the task of taking care of human lives, it is
necessary that quality education must be given to nursing students. Barnsteiner & Disch
(2017) concluded that the safety of patients and the medical services given to them will be
greatly improved if nursing schools will develop a system where nursing students are free to
express their concerns about their experiences as they perform, or the way of faculty
members, their colleagues and other people concerning their education practice something
and perform as what they are expected. Doing so would require the implementation of new
attacks of teaching, having more partnerships with clinical institutions, allowing certain
attitudes and beliefs, and embracing new curriculum content if needed so. As a result,
learning experience of nursing students will be improved; faculty members would be more
satisfied in handing their duties as educators, and last and most importantly, patients will
have a safer and enhanced patient care environment.
Another possible factor that learners and the people influencing them in choosing
certain school and career is the school fees. According to Great schools & Harris (2009),
private schools provide funds for themselves which typically comes from a sort of sources
like tuition fee from enrollees, fundraising activities subjecting parents, alumni and the
community, and personal grants coming from individuals. The profit of private
school/university does not receive tax revenues. In public schools, all children must be
accepted. Private schools are more on discriminating students, however. They are not
obligated to admit every child. They are some people’s declarations saying that teachers in
private schools are able to qualify as those public teachers. Certification is needed among
teachers in state universities while it is not required among private teachers. Getting straight,
most of the parents look forward with the teachers not only by tuition fees. Parents are
seeking more of the educators’ level of intelligence and their teaching experiences.
Aside from the quality of education and school fees, the accessibility of the school can
also be one of the factors to consider. The children or students are sensitive to changes in the
distance to the nearest school. Determining when the situation reflects the supply or demand
side is the challenge here. On the supply side, the educational institutions have a small
amount or number in rural areas, and the schools are not accessible for some families and if
accessible,
Another factor to take into consideration is the size and school population of
universities. Private universities are usually smaller than public universities and may have
only a few thousand students. Students who want a varied choice of majors can find them at
public universities. Private colleges offer a smaller range of majors but often have a
particular academic focus. Private universities keep classes small, with easy access to
professors. At public universities however, 200 students may be enrolled in some class
especially in lower-division courses (Ben, 2015).
At this point, since the physical factors have been mentioned above, it is also
important to address the people that might influence an individual in choosing a school to
enroll and course to take.
Students tend to choose their own course base on the track they have chosen. Parents
might think that they should be the one to decide about the course that their child will take
because of the experiences they already had. However, those experiences are only exclusive
to them. Embracing the fact that every child is unique and has their own interest and
inclination, and accepting the fact that parents don't own their children, then the child should
have the freedom to choice their own course (Swinhoe, 1967).
Humans that could also influence students’ school and career choice are their parents,
friends, relatives, classmates, teachers, or maybe their own choice. The study shows that the
parents’ choice rank first on their survey. Most parents of Filipino families without great
income tend to choose public schools for their children minimize expenses but also, parents
have always high regards in terms of choosing the school were their children will be trained
as future professionals. Some students choose a school where most of their classmates and
close
friends are also enrolled on that school. There are also cases that their relatives are alumni on
a school which made them choose that school too. Also, a student himself can choose a
school they want. Most of students are choosing a school by their own because aside from it
was their dream school, the degree program that they will take is offered in that school.
(Laguador et al., 2015)
Now that the possible factors affecting student’s school and course choice had already
been mentioned, it is necessary to show how do these affected the number of nursing
enrollees in the Philippines.
The described phenomena seem positive for the society. It is a prevailing idea that if
there are more students interested in pursuing nursing career, medical care would be more
accessible to the public. Also, the shortage of nurses among hospitals would likely be not
existing. Moreover, all of them will no longer be added to those Filipino citizens facing
joblessness. However, it is not the situation.
nurses are currently jobless or practicing works that do not show direct connection with the
nursing discipline. According to her, the reason behind this is the changes in employment
procedures of host nations who posed high demand for foreign nurses before. In addition,
PNA's president pointed to surplus of graduates and conflicts with respect to their education
as the factors to consider for such occurrence. However, Association of Deans of Philippine
Colleges of Nursing's Vice President Dean Leonora Reyes expounded that regardless of the
said situation, authorities have no capability to impede the public in pursuing such discipline.
The association's vice president suggested that choosing schools that have good reputation in
nursing discipline education would be an advantage since graduates from those institutions
are prioritized when it comes to employment (Crisostomo, 2008).
Now that the related literatures are already stated above, it is also important to include
studies that has connection with the researchers’ research study.
With the statement above, it is obvious that parents prefer private schools because
they are carrying and believing that those private institutions will lead their sons/daughters to
being a well-civilized and productive citizens of the society. It’s their own choice and belief.
In such way, it is not necessary to conclude that public universities will not do the same
effect. In this study, the parent’s decision in enrolling their son/daughter would be more of a
personal preference and do not reflect the general performance of all public and private
schools.
Deloraya et al. (2018) conducted a study entitled Factors Affecting the Public School
Teachers’ Choice in Sending Their Children to Private School which proved that parents
want all the best for their child, so they take it seriously in choosing the best school for them.
They were trying to determine the best environment for their child because for them,
education is an important part of raising their children and preparing them to live a successful
life. Most of the parents agreed that the academic factors are considered in their choice of a
private school for their children. They also said that the quality of instruction and education
are imperative in choosing a school for their child.
It is related to the researcher’s study as it has the same goal of knowing how people
define their side when it comes to school choice. The only difference is that their study is
focused on the perspective of the parents of the students. Another thing is that it only scopes
the preference for private schools.
Herrera et.al (2009) conducted another related study entitled Employability Status of
Nursing Graduates of Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation- Candelaria, Incorporated
from School Years 2006-2008. Having a total of 77 nursing graduates as the study’s
respondents, results show that 65% (50 out of 77) of them are employed. On the other hand,
the remaining 35% (27 out of 77) of them were found to be unemployed. The same study
showed that from those 50 employed alumni, ten percent were employed locally but not in
medical-related jobs.
The results of the study can be reflection of the quality of nursing education in
Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation- Candelaria, Incorporated as well as the current
situation of nurses who graduated from the said school when it comes to job opportunities. In
such reason, the study became relatable to the researchers’ study as the current situation of
past graduates of a certain course in a certain school has the possibility to influence or even
interfere the future enrollees’ school and career choice attitude.
The same objective is observed in the study Employment Status of Nursing Graduates
of Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation- Candelaria, Incorporated Batch 2006-2010 by
Caringal, et al. (2012). With the total of 79 nursing alumni as their respondents, results show
that 83% (62 out of 79) of them are employed while the remaining 13 respondents or 17%
remained jobless. However, it must be cleared that the same study shows that 15 (24.19% of
those who were employed) were underemployed as they were currently working in
companies with no direct connection to the practice of nursing.
Just like the study conducted by Herrera et al. (2009), this study can be reflection of the
situation of nursing alumni from Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation- Candelaria,
Incorporated which again, has the tendency to affect the way future enrollees will choose
school and course. The difference is that this study covers longer timeframe which means
that additional local, national, and global circumstances might have been present during the
additional scoped years.
In a study entitled The Career Choice of Grade 12 HUMMS and GAS Students in
Selected Schools in Candelaria, Quezon, Mayuga et al (2017) researched about the
influencing factors that affect the career choice of the respondents. The support from their
family in their chosen career, their personal interest, the status of work that they will get after
finishing their degree, the connection of career to their personality, finding suitable job
easily, the availability of opportunities, productivity in their chosen career, and the influence
of their parents and family members are the factors that they included in their research. The
study’s result show that the respondents’ decision in choosing a career is not affected by
anyone instead, it was their own preference.
Marciano, et al. (2000) conducted a study about the course taken in college of students
in Lusacan National High School Tiaong, Quezon who graduated from batch 2000-2001. It
revealed the highest course to be taken of students Computer Engineering having 21% of the
total respondents saying that it is their preferred course. Next will be Civil Engineering with
a percentage of 15%. At the third spot is nursing with 13%. The remaining 59% of the total
respondents chose other courses present in smaller percentages.
This study shows that variety of courses offered during that period is already present.
The study showed that students already have their course preferred for themselves and that
nursing belongs to the most preferred course of the study’s respondents. However, there are
differences between students during those period and students nowadays. First, the local,
national, and global situation is different during those times. Last, the present education
curriculum during those times is different from the curriculum implemented throughout the
country up to date.
CHAPTER III
METHODOLOGY
This research chapter will show the method and processes used by the researchers. It
will be comprised of the following parts: research design, research population, research
local, research instrument, data collection and statistical treatment.
Research Design
This study focuses on the factors behind the changes in number of nursing enrollees
in Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation - Candelaria Inc. as perceived by its senior
high school STEM students. This research will be approached quantitatively. It would be
non-experimental and will use descriptive method. This method will be used by the
researchers in order to describe how do MSEUF-CI’s senior high school STEM students
school and career choice as well as their perceptions about the nursing education in
MSEUF-CI affect the number of nursing enrollees entering the said university.
Research Population
number of students enrolling to the nursing course the school offers. On the other hand,
with respect to their current grade level, the researchers found them suitable because they
were the closest students to enter universities as college freshmen in the future academic
years. Speaking of the senior high school strand where the target population is currently
enrolled in, it is clear to the researchers that other senior high school students belonging to
other academic strands offered in Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation - Candelaria
Inc. such as ABM and HUMSS, as well as those in technical-vocational track are not
restricted of choosing nursing as their course. Although, the researchers see that the strand
being taken by the target population which is Science, Technology, Engineering, and
Mathematics (STEM) is the most related strand to the nursing discipline.
Research Locale
Research Instrument
The researchers used questionnaire in the form of checklist as the major instrument in
the study. The instrument was adapted from questionnaires prepared by Arguelles, et al.
(2010) and Hayes (2014). The questionnaire will be written using simple English language
so that it will be easily understood by the respondents.
Senior High School Department
FACTORS AFFECTING STEM STUDENTS’ SCHOOL AND COURSE CHOICE TO BE

The instrument was divided in three parts. The first part is centered to the university’s
senior high school STEM students’ perceptions about the nursing education in Manuel S.
Enverga University Foundation-Candelaria, Inc. The second part is about their course
choice as well as whether they will or will not choose nursing as their course. The last part
will focus on their school preference and whether they will or will not choose Manuel S.
Enverga University Foundation-Candelaria, Inc.
The researchers made a formal request that has the names of the researchers and with
their signatures in order to know the total numbers of enrollees in the nursing course in
Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation - Candelaria Inc from years 2002-2018. In
addition, the researchers asked permission from Ms. Mary Jane Carandang, principal of
high school department of Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation - Candelaria Inc. to
distribute questionnaires among MSEUF-CI’s senior high school STEM students. The
respondents will be given 15 minutes to answer the questionnaire distributed by the
researchers. Afterwards, the questionnaire will be collected so that the researchers can
proceed to the analysis of the data gathered.
Sampling Method
The study will make use of probability sampling to let every senior high school
STEM student of MSEUF-CI have equal chance of being one of respondents of the study.
Stratified sampling method is the type of probability sampling that will be used in the study
in order to fairly distribute the number of samples who will be the respondents of the study
for each sections of Grade 11 and 12 STEM students of Manuel S. Enverga University
Foundation Candelaria Inc. It is the most appropriate sampling method for the study given
that the number of students per STEM class is not equal.
Statistical Treatment
N = population
C = margin of errors
n = number of samples
In order to get the number of samples from the population of the study, the
researchers used the Slovin’s formula.
n =_N_
1+ Ne2
n = _ 328 _
1+328(.05)2
n = 180.22 or 180
Therefore, the total number of samples that will be used in the study are 180 STEM
students of MSEUF-CI.

From this it could be said that majority of the respondents will continue to study in
college.
The reasons of those who said that they do not prefer to study in college is presented
on Figure 2. It shows that 50% of them has personal reasons on why they said no when
asked about the question. It is followed by financial problem being answered by 37.50% of
them. 12.50% of them answered that it was their parent’s decision. Another 12.50%
answered that they want to work already.
This indicates that personal reasons are the leading cause on why they decided not to
continue study in college.

The distribution shows that variety is present among STEM student’s course choice.
Civil Engineering topped the list by being preferred by 30.81% or 53 out of 172. On the other
hand, nursing, which is the course being focused in this study reached the third spot among
the most preferred course of STEM students by being preferred by 12.21% or 21 out of 172
respondents who said that they will continue to study in college. However, it must be noted
that majority of the listed courses got small percentages, the students that chose those courses
still comprise the larger fraction of students who will continue to study in college. In record,
those courses which were each preferred by 7 or less students comprise 25.58% or 44 out of
172. This is higher than the percentage of students that chose Mechanical Engineering- the
second most preferred course in the list having 13.95% or 24 out of 172.

Just like in STEM students’ course choice, variety is also observed in the distribution
above presenting their school choice. SLSU topped the list by being preferred by 27.78% or
50 out of 180. On the other hand, MSEUFCI, which is the focus of this study reached the 2 nd
spot in the list having 18.33% or 33 out of 180. However, it must be noted that majority of
the listed universities got small percentages, the students that chose those universities still
comprise the large fraction of students. In record, those universities which were each
preferred by 7 or less students still comprise 25% of the respondents’ responses or 45 out of
180.

The table above revealed the respondents’ general agreement to the statements above
regarding the personal factors which might affect their perception towards the nursing
course. With the WAM of 3.03 which is verbally equivalent to agree, it showed that the
respondents feel proud helping the person achieve his/her good health. In addition, the same
table show that nursing books and media inspires the respondents with the WAM of 2.86.
However, disagreement was found to the statement,” I want to work in health care agency,”
with the WAM of 2.48. Nevertheless, the General Weighted Average Mean for the
statements in personal factors came to be 2.56 which shows agreement.
The study conducted by Arguelles, et. al (2010) showed the same result wherein their
respondents also feel proud of helping the person achieve his/her good health since they
got a resulting WAM of 4.30 which is verbally equivalent to Strongly Agree yet they used a
5-point Likert scale wherein their values in qualitative description are strongly disagree,
disagree, moderately agree, agree and disagree. For the statement of “Nursing books and
media inspired me”, their study also came up with almost same result as they got the result
of Moderately Agree from their respondents having the WAM of 3.30. It was also the same
with the statement “I love taking care of the sick” having the WAM of 3.30 which is also
equivalent to Moderately Agree.
In general, the study of Arguelles, et. al (2014) has obtained almost the same result
the researchers' study wherein their respondents are on the side of agreement though for the
second and third leading statements, the resulting WAM ended in the weight of Moderately
Agree. For this reason, it could be inferred that their respondents could have some
uncertainties on their decision whether they agreed or disagreed on those statements unlike in
the study of the researchers wherein the stand of the respondents is clear.

Basing from the table shown above, it is found that the respondents generally agreed
to the statements with respect to peer factors which could affect their perceptions towards the
nursing course. Having the WAM of 3.80, it is clear the respondents have strong agreement
to the statement stating that they want to succeed in life just like their neighborhood who is
registered nurse in abroad. There is also an agreement found to the statement saying that their
friends told them that they are qualified in the nursing course; having the WAM of 2.82.
Aside from this, the respondents also agreed that one of their friends was taking Nursing
since the resulting WAM is 2.63. Overall, the General Weighted Average Mean is 2.74
which is verbally equivalent to “Agree.”
Arguelles et. Al (2010) came up with different result wherein the majority of their
respondents only Moderately Agreed to the statement saying if they want to succeed in life
just like their neighborhood who is a registered nurse in abroad as they got a resulting
WAM of 3.35. Also, they almost the same result wherein their respondents got a resulting
WAM of 2.75 on the statement “My friends told me that I'm qualified in this course”
which is verbally equivalent to Moderately Agree. On the other hand, the statement “One of
my friend was taking this course,” have the same result since the resulting WAM is 3.50
which is verbally equivalent to Agree.
In total, their study showed dissimilar result wherein their General Weighted
Average Mean is 2.59 which is verbally equivalent to Disagree.

The table above revealed the respondents’ general disagreement to the statements
above regarding the family factors which might affect their perception towards the nursing
course. With the WAM of 2.96 which is verbally equivalent to agree, it showed that the
respondents agreed to the statement stating their relatives who is their benefactor wants them
to take nursing course. On the other hand, with the WAM of 2.44, it is found that the health
condition of the respondents’ family does not motivate them to take Nursing. In addition,
having the WAM of 2.23 disagreement was also found to the statement saying that their
auntie/uncle is a nurse in a hospital and she/he assure that she he/she will help the respondent
in getting a job in the hospital where he/she works. From this, the researcher come up with
the General Weighted Average Mean of 2.23 which is verbally equivalent to “Disagree.”
The study conducted by Arguelles et, al. showed opposite result wherein the majority
of their respondents Disagreed that their relative who is their benefactor wants them to
take this course since it has a resulting WAM of 2.40. Similarly, their study revealed
practically the same result as they got a resulting WAM of 3.10 which is verbally equivalent
to Moderately Agree on the statement “The health condition of my family motivates me
to take the course. The result was the similar with the statement “My auntie/uncle is a
nurse in a hospital and she/he assures that she will help me to get a job in the hospital
she/he working” which is also equivalent to Moderately Agree with the WAM of 2.80.
Overall, the researchers’ study presented different result since the General Weighted
Average Mean of their study is 2.76 which is verbally equivalent to Moderately Agree
wherein the respondents agreed to the statements regarding the Family Factors that might
influence their perception towards the nursing course. However, uncertainty among their
responses is possible since their respondents just relied in the middle of the five choices.

Basing from the table shown above, it is found that the respondents generally agreed
to the statements with respect to school factors which could affect their perceptions towards
the nursing course. Having the WAM of 3.39, it is clear the respondents have strong
agreement to the statement stating that they prefer their school to be near in their residence.
There is also a strong agreement found to the statement saying that they prefer a school that
has adequate facilities; having the WAM of 3.35. Aside from this, the respondents also
agreed to the statement preferring a school where their course is offered since the resulting
WAM is 3.31. Overall, the General Weighted Average Mean is 2.87 which is verbally
equivalent to “Agree.”
The study of Arguelles et. al came up with different result in which their respondents
Disagreed that they prefer a school that is near their residence with a WAM of 2.20. The
result of their study regarding the statement “I prefer a school that has adequate facilities”
had also diferent result as it got a WAM of 3.10 which has a qualitative interpretation of
Moderately Agree. Their respondents also Disagreed that they prefer a school where their
preferred course is offered with the WAM of 2.40 which is equivalent to Disagree.
Generally, the researchers’ study came up with different result wherein most of their
respondents do not prefer a school that is near their residence, and school where their

The table above revealed the respondents’ general agreement to the statements above
regarding the strategies that could possibly influence STEM students to possibly affect the
number of nursing enrollees in MSEUFCI. With the WAM of 3.46 which is verbally
equivalent to strongly agree, it showed that the respondents agreed to the statement where the
financial aid programs are improved. In addition, with the WAM of 3.29, it is stated that they
strongly agree to the statement where the scholarship grants for college students being
offered in the university is strengthened. On the other hand, having the WAM of 3.12,
agreement was also found to the statement saying that they prefer using social media sites
like the university’s Facebook page to promote that nursing course offered in MSEUF-CI.
From this, the researcher come up with the General Weighted Average Mean of 3.07 which
is verbally equivalent to “Agree.”
On the study conducted by Hayes (2014), the influence of marketing strategies was
assessed through the students’ perceptions in attending a specific university. It is done to help
private educational institutions to increase their enrollment by adapting ways that could help
market the university in such way that suit to the respondents’ responses. The top three
resulting most influential strategies will be compared to their counterparts in the study
conducted by Hayes.
In the researchers’ study the resulting most influential strategy is “Have improved financial
aid programs,” having the WAM of 3.46 which is verbally equivalent to Very Influential.
In comparison, providing financial aids to the students got the WAM of 3.04 which verbally
equivalent to Moderately Influential.
On the other hand, the second most influential strategy according to the results in the
researchers’ study is, “Strengthen scholarship grants being offered in the university,” with the
WAM of 3.29 and is translatable to Very Influential. Similarly, in the study of Hayes
(2014), the strategy of having scholarships offered in a university are perceived by their
respondents as Very Influential. Actually, in that same study, it was also the second most
influential strategy with the WAM of 3.43.
Following the two statements above is “Use social media sites like the university’s
Facebook page to promote the nursing course offered in MSEUFCI,” having the WAM of
3.12 and can be described verbally as Moderately Influential. Contrary to this is the result
in the study of Hayes (2014) for the strategy of using the university Facebook page wherein
the resulting WAM is 1.50. It means that the respondents in that study found this particular
strategy as Not Influential to their perceptions in attending a particular university.
CHAPTER V
Summary of Findings
Based from the data gathered from the respondents of the study, the following
findings are obtained.
Civil Engineering is the college course where most of the respondents will possibly
take. In record, 30.81% or 53 out of 172 chose this course. Nursing, the course being
focused by this study, was only chosen by 12.21% or 21 out of 172 students. Despite of
that, this course is still one of those courses with high number of students that will possibly
take a specific course basing from the distribution of the respondents’ responses.
Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) is the university where most of the
respondents will possibly enroll in. In record, 27.78% or 50 out of 172 has this university as
their choice for their college education. Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation-
Candelaria, though did not came to be the most preferred university, still have 18.33% or 33
out of 172 respondents choosing it.
Factors that Influence STEM Students Perceptions towards the Nursing Course
Three factors are considered to know how STEM students perceive the nursing course
namely the personal factors, peer factors, and family factors.
In the personal factors, the statement that was most agreed by the respondents is “I
feel proud of helping a person achieve his/her good health,” with the WAM of 4.30 which is
verbally equivalent to Strongly Agree. For the General Weighted Average Mean is 2.56
meaning that they generally confirming that the provided statements under the personal
factors has the potential of influencing their perceptions to the nursing course as it landed to
be an Agree.
For Peer Factors, the statement that the respondents most agreed to is, “I want to
succeed in life just like their neighborhood who is a registered nurse abroad,” having the
WAM of 3.8 which corresponds to Strongly Agree. In addition, the General Weighted
Average Mean is 2.74 and implies that the respondents generally Agree that the provided
statements under the peer factors could influence their perceptions to the nursing course.
As for the family factors, the respondents most agreed to the statement, “My
relatives who is my benefactor wants me to take this course,” with the WAM of 2.96
which verbally means Agree. The General Weighted Average Mean on the other hand is
2.23 indicating that the respondents generally Disagree that the provided statements under
family factors could influence their perceptions to the course of nursing.

`
Comparing the General Weighted Average Mean of the three factors, it is revealed
that the Peer Factors are the most influential factor to the STEM students’ perception towards
the nursing course. It is then followed by Personal Factors. Though, it is also revealed that
the Family Factors do not affect their perceptions to the nursing course in general.
Strategies that Could Possibly Influence STEM Students to Positively Affect the
Number of Nursing Enrollees in MSEUFCI
The strategy that is believed by the STEM students to be the most influential way to
them that could positively affect the number of nursing enrollees in MSEUFCI is having
improved financial aid programs. With the WAM of 3.46, it is clear that the respondents
Very Influential that it is the best way to increase the number of nursing enrollees in the
university.
Conclusion
From the data gathered and discussed, several conclusions can be drawn. First, since
the STEM students focuses on the fields of science, technology, engineering and
mathematics, they are exposed to several learning fields that could help them discover or
help be guided to the course that they would want to pursue in college. As a result, variety
among their course choice became very evident and that is why the number of students to
take Nursing is low (only 21 out 172). Yet it is still one of those courses that have the most
number of course takers as compared to other courses that would be taken by only 7 or less
students.
The same system of observation is observed for the STEM students’ school choice.
Due to variety in their school choices, the number of students who would possibly enroll in
MSEUFCI is also low (only 33 out of 180) even though it is the second school with the most
number of possible enrollees shown in the distribution before. With that, the number of
enrollees in MSEUFCI especially the number of nursing enrollees will get affected if they
remained with those choices.
As for the respondents’ perception to the nursing course, having Peer Factors as the
most influential factor, this only implies that the STEM students seek for real life examples
of the life condition of persons belonging to a certain field or discipline in building up
perceptions that would decide whether they would want to take that certain course or not.
Aside from this, personal factors still affect their decision in choosing a course to attend for
college. Their personal character and set of personal interest take influence and guide them to
go for the school and course where they truly want to pursue and be a graduate. The family
of the respondents, based from the distribution presented in the study, do not dictate what
their sons/daughters are going to take in college. They let them choose the career path they
want to pass through.
Regarding the students’ basis in choosing a university to enroll in, the need for a
university that is near to the respondents’ residences indicates the senior high school students
residing near the campus or in the municipality of Candelaria could be the target nursing
enrollees of the university. In line with this, the university should take opportunity to reach as
many senior high school graduates residing near the university as possible to showcase what
it can offer to them if the school administration would want to increase the university
enrollees specially the nursing enrollees.
At last, for the strategy of increasing the number of nursing enrollees in MSEUFCI,
since the STEM students themselves rendered the most influencing move to achieve the
vision of increasing college students to take nursing in the university, it only reflects what
most of the respondents need. Addressing this could satisfy not only the declining number of
nursing enrollees, but also the educational assistance needed by the STEM students in
MSEUFCI for their college education. The further development of currently present financial
aid programs in MSEUFCI will truly give off positive effect.
Recommendation
Based on the findings and conclusions the following were the recommendation:
1. For the school administration, the researchers want to suggest if they can host free
seminars for both upcoming students and to their parents to inform them about the
process of the tuition and also the nursing facilities that is present in the said
university. In addition, spreading the awareness of the existing financial aid programs
in the university will be helpful too while it is in the process of further development.
2. For the graduating students, the upcoming college students should consider the
factors on which school they will enter, by this they will be well-informed and be
interested about the offers of the said university. They should plan the course that will
take them in college.
3. For parents and family, have the students guided with their course choice so there
could be greater chance that they will get benefited on the course they will take up in
college and be satisfied and fulfilled during and after their college education
4. To the future researchers, the researchers suggest to conduct a further study about
recent changes or events in the university such as being covered by the UNIFAST
program would affect the number of college enrollees in MSEUFCI especially the
number of nursing students there.
