Diversity in Workplace – Thinking Hats

Activity Sheet

Instruction:
Answer the Thinking Hats questions based on Janet Stovall’s TED Talk “How to Get Serious About
Diversity and Inclusivity in the workplace”.

White Hat What evidence, findings, and beliefs were presented in the speech regarding
(Factual Hat) diversity and inclusivity in the workplace? Elaborate your answer.
When talking about diversity, it claims that the workplace should be 13% black and
18% Hispanic, but according to her data, inclusion should be an important part o
the workplace, so with this, a diverse company should accept 30% of people from
other races. Companies that has ethnic diversity performs 33% better than an
average company and 24% higher income growth. On the contrary, most large
corporations are 90% white with males being in the majority.

Red Hat How do you feel about listening to the points shared by the speaker? Why did you
(Emotional feel that way? What made you feel that way?
Hat) I agree with the all the statement that she made. I feel that racism will not stop if
we remain insensitive. Racism has been rampant since way back in our history, I
feel that this should be the time that racism comes to an end. It is always unfair not
only now but it has been this way or so long and I feel like this needs to chance. I
believe that everyone is equal, everyone can achieve something big, and
everyone is unique in their own ways.

Black Hat What could be the dangers, problems, or challenges associated to diversity and
(Critical Hat) inclusivity in the workplace based on the speaker? How can these factors create
inefficiency in the workplace?
The problem here is that most companies contains 90% white and is filled with
men. Unfair situations also arise due to race, which can lead to poor performance.
The data showed that a diverse company is much more productive in the
workplace.

Yellow Hat What are the points that you agree with the speaker? What are the positive points
(Optimistic shared by the speaker in terms of diversity and inclusivity in the workplace? How
Hat) can these become helpful in the workplace?
I agree that diversity makes a company much more productive and allows tasks to
be completed at a faster pace. This is true for me since I am in a university setting
where everyone that I encounter comes from a different place, ethnicity, culture
etc. and being in a diverse environment, I learn much faster, and I become more
productive since I can learn something from my environment and they can learn
something from me as well. I also agree with her when she stated that companies
and businesses should practice diversity. this is a win-win situation for everyone.
Green Hat What suggestions do you have to improve the diversity and inclusivity in the
(Creative Hat) workplace? You can answer this in the context of a meeting in a workplace where
everyone is involved and present. Elaborate
I suggest hiring employees for their skills and abilities rather than their race and
ethnicity. I also suggest honoring traditions by offering unique vacations. I lastly
suggest stop being racist.

Blue Hat Provide a situation when you worked/collaborated with other people and
(Contextualizatio relate the occurrences to the points shared by the speaker on diversity and
n Hat) inclusivity. They can be formal or informal work/collaborations in FEU or
elsewhere. Validate the speaker’s claims in relation to your experiences.
Just like what I stated earlier, in a university setting, you hang around with
people who is all different from one another, the FEU community is rich in
diversity. The best example of this occurrence is when a professor assigns a
group work, and a tasks is completed faster since all the person in the group
has different experiences. Another example is in my course which is Internal
Audit which contains roughly 80% women and around 20% men since there
are only a few male students that are currently enrolled in my course, most of
my classmates are female.

Purple Hat What important learning insights can you derive from the reading? How will you
(Ownership use these in your personal and professional endeavors?
Hat) I realized that being open-minded about racism is different since it is easy to be
open-minded about racism by just accepting that it ought to not be tolerated but by
being single-minded it is encouraging me to do something that can help to alter
the thinking of other individuals around racism and influence others to by doing
something around it.
