ABSTRACT

This paper presents the results and reflections from a study conducted on students' learning style

and problems that the students of Dominic Institute of Science and Technology encounters on

their online class learning. This study was conducted using the convenient sampling under the

non-probability sampling where students are the subject because they are "convenient" sources of

data for the study. Active, visual, and global learning methods were the most prevalent. In terms

of learning style, attitudes towards the internet problems, which they might face during their

online classes as well as schemes and summary preparation, findings were discovered. Although

these are the prevalent patterns, the survey revealed that each student learns in their own unique

way, with the internet influencing their learning style and techniques. This allows educational

institutions to recognize and make available current resources such as the internet, as well as the

tactics needed to improve and build DISTs that are more forceful and better suited to students'

needs and interests. The study has respondents from Dominic Institute of Science and Technology

Inc. such as Grade 11 with the total of 23 respondents.

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

In the Philippines, as the country continues to confront the issues brought about by the

pandemic the Department of Education (DepEd) are addressing challenges in the basic

education through Learning Continuity Plan (LCP) for this upcoming school year of 2020-

2021. Through the collaborative effort of stakeholders, the crafted LCP includes key

features on K-12 curriculum adjustments: alignment of learning materials; various

modalities of delivery; and corresponding teacher and parent/guardian training for

homeschooling. These modifications on certain policies and practices were necessary steps

of the education department in adapting to the “new normal” while remaining true to the

framework of “Sulong Edukalidad'' campaign for a national effort for quality basic

education. Review and updating of the K-12 curriculum as one of the core components of

“Sulong Edukalidad '' that promises to deliver a learner-centered curriculum program and

develops the learning styles of every Filipino student to help achieve their full potential

(DepEd website, 2020).

Based on the present curriculum which is the K to 1 curriculum, pupils must be exposed to a

learner-centered approach. Learner-centered learning is an effective method to improve the

academic competency and identify their learning styles in order to enhance the skills of

every pupil in different learning areas.

Several studies have been conducted in order to measure the effectiveness of the learning

style approach as an effective instruction for the students. Palacpac (nd) concluded in this

study on integrating multiple intelligence in teaching Mathematics that MI approach

increases the awareness of the students of Lodlod National High School in Lipa, Batangas

regarding their preferred styles in learning. Aside from that, this approach also enhances the

participation of the students in the discussion. It is visible in the result that integrating MI in

teaching mathematics raises the performance of the students. Moreover, the study was able

to identify that the MI approach does not only improve the students’ performance but also

help the teachers to be aware of the techniques and methods to be used in order to see the

potential of the learners.

Meanwhile, Faustino (2013) made a research on how Multiple Intelligence is applied on the

gifted children in Grade 1 Science using the differentiated curriculum. The experiment was

conducted at one of the biggest public schools in the district of Malolos, Bulacan,

Philippines with special science classes for children with advanced abilities or those who are

gifted according to the Special Science Elementary School (SESS) Project Manual. The

result proved that in the use of multiple intelligences on the curriculum of the students, they

learned better than the usual curriculum that they used. Each student has their own

intelligence just like on the result of the said research. One student learns better on pictures

and as a result the strength of this student is in spatial and interpersonal areas. This student

has also contained a weakness in logical and interpersonal areas. Seeing this student who

learned better from the differentiated curriculum using the multiple intelligences of Howard

Gardner, it marks that a

students can learn in their own way. Every respondent learns from their own learning and it

is because they can choose between the seven intelligences that are fitted to them.

Before we become a full fledge adult and find the job we dreamed of achieving, we need to

step up first and work hard towards our goal, and one of the first step is finishing our

Education and gaining some experiences from it. Dominic Institute of Science and

Technologies or mostly known as DIST offers brilliant teaching to their students and treat

them like families, they also offer courses that you like before you become a successful

person and graduates. One of those courses are GAS or General Academic Strand. GAS is a

Senior High School strand that takes on a generalist approach in preparing students for

college. It covers various disciplines like Humanities, Social Sciences, Organization, and

Management.

Since GAS does not specialize in any strand, you are free to choose any college degree

program under the three other strands based on the elective you will choose. Moreover, a

possible course to pursue from this strand is Education. What you will gain from the GAS

Strand: Hone your creative writing skills, learn about Organization Management, learn

about Empowerment Technologies, gain knowledge of Disaster Readiness, Risk Reduction,

and developing your communication skills. But we were just talking about the good things

BULACAN

you could achieve when choosing GAS, but how about their Learning styles and problems

encountering this school year 2022-2023?

According to researches 77.3% GAS students of DIST are still not adapting towards the new

normal and new rules of education in this day of quarantine. Some of the students are

actually complaining on how cruel this pandemic is and stress and depression keeps piling

up upon many students even on Dominic Institute Science and Technologies.

This research was aimed to evaluate the learning styles of education faculty students and to

determine the effect of their success and relationship between their learning styles and

academic success. A learning style is defined as the characteristics, strengths and

preferences in the way how people receive and process information (Felder & Silverman,

1988; Allinson & Hayes, 1996; Felder & Brent, 2005; Hsieh et al., 2011). It refers to the fact

that every person has his or her own method or set of strategies when learning (Schemeck

1988; ChanLin, 2009; Ford & Chen, 2000; Weinstein, 1996). Learning styles are not di-

chotomous (black or white, present or absent). Learning styles generally operate on a

continuum or on multiple, intersecting continua (Ehrman, 1996; Dunn, 1983; Reid, 1995;

McDermott & Beitman, 1984).

Understanding every learner is the reason for the teaching profession. Several studies

BULACAN

presented above conclude that identifying learning styles of Filipino learners helps the

educator to find or create other methods of instruction aside from the traditional in order to

improve the performance of students and to find out his/her potential and talent. Multiple

Intelligence/Learning styles inventory of every Filipino student before the beginning of

every school year is important in the basic education curriculum being able to create

instructional material that is learner-centered and designed in the current situation. Also, it is

merely an important one in order to achieve the goals of the Department of Education in its

commitment to enhance the full potential of Filipino students while facing these trying times

without compromising the education of the young generation.

This study is significant to the Department of Education because the result of this research

will lead them to establish policies for the “new normal” learning environment of the

students. It will also be beneficial for the school administrators and teachers so that they will

have a guide for designing instructional materials based on the learning styles of the

students. The students will also benefit from this research because it will be easy for them to

accommodate learning most especially in the “new normal” set-up if the teacher will

consider their learning styles in drafting their instructional materials for class. This study

will also be beneficial for the guidance counselors to have more understanding with the

students’ learning behavior.

The Internet is very beneficial for students in all aspects. It serves as a teacher to students

from where you can ask everything and it will answer you. The Internet can be used for very

fast purposes to get information and knowledge that you want to get to every subject you

have. Having a compatible internet connection is very helpful especially nowadays, the

education is through online. It becomes stress-free for students because they can study

without interruption, for example they can recite because their signal is good or they can

fully understand what the teacher discussed. By the use of the compatible internet

connection, it’s had a positive impact on their academic performance, as providing a better

learning experience.

The topic we discussed is for us to be able to know how having a poor and good internet

connection affects the academic performances of the selective students of Dominic Institute

of Science and Technology.

We choose this topic because many students can relate to this topic especially grade 11

students. It might be that we have the same perspective of the impact of compatible internet

connection.

This topic is for the teachers, school administrators, future researchers and our co-students

to know that some of the students can’t recite or can’t understand the topic because they

didn’t pay attention or simply they don’t want it, it might be because of their internet

connection.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study is to determine the learning styles and problems encountered by the learning

styles and problems facing by Senior high school students in their online class. The findings

which this study will reveal, may benefit certain groups and the benefits they may be able to

gain are as follow:

Students. The Internet is very beneficial for students in all aspects. It is used for very fast

purposes to get information and knowledge. The Internet allows students to be in constant

contact with their classmates and teachers most especially in this type of situation where we

have a pandemic, that we can even communicate to our teachers in terms of studies.

Teachers. The Internet is very beneficial for teachers to access more information. One of

the biggest advantages is that it gives teachers the ability to access all different types of

information. It can be seen as a repository of free materials that can be beneficial for

teachers.

Future Researchers/ The Researchers Themselves. The Internet can help the future

researchers which serves as a good source for research work and learning, it can generate

current information and fact-findings.

Faculty Administrators. The Internet helps school administrators to reduce the cost and

improve the quality of school. The Internet also enables teachers to give more attention to

individual students' needs to support shared learning.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

According to Connectivism theory by George Siemens and Stephen Downes, “A key feature

of Connectivism is that much learning can happen across peer networks that take place

online. In Connectivism learning, a teacher will guide students to information and answer

key questions as needed, in order to support student learning and sharing on their own.

Students can also be encouraged to seek out information on their own online and express

what they find. A connected community around this shared information often results”. In

this theory, they emphasize how internet technologies such as web browsers, search engines,

wikis, online discussion forums, and social networks contributed to new avenues of

learning. In our own understanding, this theory tells how important internet connection is. In

this generation, if you have an internet connection it can make your life easier.
