Chandrawli Shahdara

DELHI WETLANDS

Delhi is not only a metropolis, but also a waypoint where the river Yamuna passes through creating
various geological features, namely the wetlands in East Delhi. Chandrawli Shahdara(King’s Gate) is
one of them, located right by the Chandrawli village, which drains the river. It is an important ecological
feature of Delhi along with countless other small wetlands. This wetland in particular is an inland natural
wetland whose ownership is regulated by the DDA. Historically this place was under the rule of the
Mughals who named this place “Shahdara” where Shah means King and Dara means door. It was an
important hub since water provides the base for all activities. However, this place like many other has
been affected heavily by development and industrialization. Pollutants from construction work, plastic
waste, chemicals in the Yamuna and building dams has slowly contributed to the downfall of this
wetland which is home to a variety of flora and fauna which co-exist and depend on the wetland. Not
only is the ecosystem affected, but a place of potential scenic beauty and heritage is ruined. Thus, the
responsibility to bring change lies in our own hands. Only we can make change happen by thinking
rationally and voicing our opinions to convey our desires to the government. Citizens should proactively
maintain the wetlands and avoid polluting it. Together with the creation of social media pages and
petitions, industries can be forced to reduce if not eliminate disposal of toxic waste in the river and local
authorities should be persuaded to restore the area to its former glory. Moreover, we as citizens have to
ensure cleanliness of the wetlands, take care of the flora and fauna, and leave it untouched by human
activity. Without the key effort of citizens, even the government can only do so much.
