Introduction

The emergence of technology paved the way for the development of different

types of media. Media allows individuals to create, access, and exchange

information and start communication. Through the years, it has evolved from print

media, broadcast media, to new media. In today's modern time, new media is the

most used and recognized type of media by individuals for its convenience and

accessibility. It makes use of digital technologies such as the Internet to create

electronic and digital forms of communication. The most common type of new media

that is used by individuals is social media.

Social media provides avenues for its users to stay connected online. It is

defined by TechTarget (2021) as a collective term for websites and applications that

focus on communication, community-based input, interaction, content-sharing, and

collaboration.  Investopedia (2021) gave a similar definition of social media, which is

a computer-based technology that facilitates the sharing of ideas, thoughts, and

information through virtual networks and communities. As it exploded in popularity,

its users also widened. The latest compilation of social media users statistics of

Smart Insights (2022) revealed that 61.8% of the world's population are active social

media users. Facebook and Twitter are two of the most used social media networks

by these social media users. Furthermore, Pew Research Center (2021) cited that

from the 66% of Americans who use Facebook, 31% of them visit it to get news. And

from the 23% who use Twitter, 13% use it to get news.
TOMAS CLAUDIO COLLEGES – BASIC EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

Social media was originally used to stay in touch and interact with friends

and various communities. But as time passed by, it was also used for promoting

awareness of specific causes, advertising businesses, self-expression, and helping

foster friendships between individuals who may have never met without social

media. In recent years, as stated by Dan-Xuan and Stieglitz (2012), social media are

increasingly being used for political context. Political news and information are being

present in social media. This caused people to be dependent on social media to

keep informed about current events and issues. This information becomes a factor in

shaping the political views of social media users.

Political views are defined by the Queensland Human Rights Commission

(2019) as someone's beliefs, opinions, and ideas relating to the policies, structure,

composition, roles, obligations, purposes, or activities of government. In this study,

political views will refer to the opinion of individuals about political issues, events,

and officials or candidates. It can be influenced by many factors including family,

race, region, and media. As previously stated, social media is now being used for

spreading and accessing political information and news. As social media users

become exposed to political-related news, the possibility of social media influencing

their political views becomes higher.

Ahmad (2019) stated that the Internet plays a significant role in providing

information to the public on political events, engaging its users, and encouraging

them to get involved in offline political activities. The Internet has become vital for

political discussions and political participation. He cited that millennial are the most
TOMAS CLAUDIO COLLEGES – BASIC EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

active users of the Internet and social media. Online activities related to politics are

useful and encourage youth to participate in political events. They also use new

media for political information which includes sharing opinions, ideas, and

perspectives, and discussing current issues within the community. It illustrated that

new media provides an opportunity to the youth for political discussions through

different social media platforms and different pages and groups. The findings of the

study showed that respondents use social media to be well-aware of political issues

and online political activities have a significant influence on political efficacy.

Significantly, Mariano, Torres, and Vargas (2021) also explored the use of

social media in politics. According to their study, social media as a form of

communication has significantly impacted politics by influencing public opinions,

attitudes, and behaviors. Since the internet made its connection in the Philippines in

1994, its impact has been crucial on people's lives. Out of the total population of

internet and social media users in the country, the youth and the students are the

most frequent users of it. Politics has also taken up to the internet and politicians use

social media to effectively persuade people to vote for them. Further, the study

found out that Facebook was the most frequently used social media platform to look

up political issues. Additionally, respondents use social media to read news articles

and watch videos about political issues.  The study also focused on the effect or

impact of the information provided by social media on the voting decision of the

respondents on whom to elect. The results revealed that most of the respondents

were neutral about voting for the political candidate because of the positive reviews
TOMAS CLAUDIO COLLEGES – BASIC EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

on social media. In addition, most of the respondents disagreed about voting for the

political candidate because they often saw him/her on social media. Moreover, this

study finds a link between Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram and voting for

political candidates.

In connection to the present study, the reviewed literature emphasized the

role of social media in providing political information that can significantly affect

people’s political decision-making as well as their political awareness. This will

provide support for the present study in finding the influence of social media political

views.

As stated by Sokhan (2014), the Internet, through social network sites which

can be referred to as social media, is an important political information source for

young adults. When the popularity of social media has dramatically grown over the

years, it has also taken the political landscape to a whole new level. It enables

various forms of interaction between voters and political actors that lead to social

media having the ability to significantly influence the political arena.

This study utilized a concept to find out the relationship of their variables. It

was used to find out the effect of social media on the political opinions of the

respondents. The results revealed that the respondents use various social media

platforms including Facebook, YouTube, and Google. The findings of the proponent

showed the influence of social media on students' political stances and the

outcomes of their political beliefs were based on what they learned from social

media. The results also revealed that some of the respondents changed their
TOMAS CLAUDIO COLLEGES – BASIC EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

political stance based on the new information perceived by social media. In

accordance with the present study, it explored the effects of social media on the

political stances and beliefs of the respondents that are connected to students’

political views, which is the dependent variable of the present study.

In the study of David, San Pascual, and Torres (2019), Facebook is also

mentioned as the most popular social media platform used for political purposes.  It

is now an important source of political news in many developed countries including

the Philippines. Because it has been found to increase political involvement,

increase knowledge of political campaigns, and improve voting and other types of

participation. This study found out the link between reliance on Facebook for news,

political knowledge, and political engagement in the Philippines. Furthermore, this

study emphasized that reliance means using Facebook as a source of information

without the benefit of using other traditional media sources, such as television or

newspapers. In addition, reliance means that if one does not receive news stories

through the FB platform, there would be no alternative source and the result is low

knowledge of politics.

The results of the study revealed that Filipinos between 15 to 45 years old

who rely less on social media as a news source exhibit higher levels of perceived

knowledge about politics than those who rely more on it for news. They measured

FB news reliance, exposure to FB news, and discussion of politics on FB to find out

the influence of reliance on FB news for political engagement. Moreover, following

political officials or institutions on social media are associated with higher levels of
TOMAS CLAUDIO COLLEGES – BASIC EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

political interest and engagement, those with more politically active friends on

Facebook have higher levels of exposure to political content online, and there is a

positive correlation between Facebook being a source of information about politics

and discussing politics more often with others. In relation to the present study, it

emphasized the influence of social media by discussing the factors that can affect

political views. Additionally, it indicated that one’s news exposure on different news

and political content present on a person’s news feed can develop a reliance on FB

for political news.

As supported by the reviewed literature and study, social media is also used

in the Philippines for political purposes. It is used to spread political information and

promote political engagement and participation. Specifically, the senior high school

students of Tomas Claudio Colleges, where the researchers are currently studying,

use social media to stay informed about politics, especially during the election

campaign period. Senior high school students are using social media to get

information about political candidates and to stay informed about political events and

issues. They also use social media to express their political opinions and engage in

different political activities online.  These reflect that they become highly dependent

on social media. Especially during the time of the pandemic, social media have

become the most accessible source of political news and information for senior high

school students. The high dependency of senior high school students on social

media can significantly affect shaping their political views.

TOMAS CLAUDIO COLLEGES – BASIC EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

This study is anchored to the Media Dependency Theory by Sandra Ball-

Rokeach and Melvin DeFleur (1976) as cited by Sokhan (2014). This theory is

defined as a systematic approach used to explain the relationship and the effects

between three entities; audience, media, and society. Addedly, as explained by Ying

(2014), the relationship between the media and the audience is the most vital part

because it predicts the influence of social media on the audience in this theory. In

most information-based societies, individuals tend to develop a dependency on the

media to satisfy a variety of their needs, ranging from the need for information on a

political candidate’s policy positions to the need for relaxation and entertainment.

This theory also stated that the higher the need for significant information, the

stronger the motivation to seek mediated information and the dependency on the

media is. The proponents of this theory emphasized that audiences develop a

greater dependency on media as it performs a greater number of social functions.

And the greater the audiences' dependency on the media, the greater the potential

effects of the media on the audience is.

In connection to the present study, the theory explains that the dependency of

people on social media for political information may influence their political views.

People will see different political information and news as they use and depend on

social media. People can use the information and news present in social media in

shaping their political views. In addition, as the dependency of people on social

media for political information becomes higher, the possibility of social media

influencing their political views increases. Thus, the theory will help the researchers
TOMAS CLAUDIO COLLEGES – BASIC EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

to determine the influence of social media on the political views of senior high school

students.

This study will be guided by the IV-DV model created by the researchers.

There are two frames in this model. The first frame refers to the independent

variables that include the respondent's profile in terms of age, sex, grade, strand,

and track, and the influence of social media in terms of social media being used and

frequency of use, presence of political information, and dependency on the political

information.

The second frame refers to the dependent variable which includes the

political views of the respondents.

This study will focus on the influence of social media on the political views of

senior high school students in Tomas Claudio Colleges during the academic year

2021-2022. Specifically, it will seek to describe the respondents in terms of their age,

sex, grade, strand, and track and finds the influence of social media on their political

views in terms of the type of social media that is being used and frequency of use,

the presence of political news, and information they encountered in the social media

they use, the dependency of users on the political news and information they have

read or find in social media.

Although different studies measured the impact and influence of social media

on the political participation and decision-making of people, there are not enough

studies that focused on the influence of media on political views. The current

situation wherein students have developed a high dependency on social media

TOMAS CLAUDIO COLLEGES – BASIC EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

piqued the interest of the researchers to conduct the study. This study aims to

determine how social media influence the political views of students. It focuses on

how students use political news and information on social media to create their

political views.

This study will use the descriptive research approach by using a

questionnaire checklist to find the influence of social media on the political views of

the respondents

media.

METHODS

Research Design

The descriptive research design will be used in the study to determine the

Influence of Social Media on the Political Views of the Senior High School students

in Tomas Claudio Colleges School Year 2021-2022.

According to McCombes (2020), descriptive research aims to accurately and

systematically describe a population, situation, or phenomenon. The descriptive

method also identifies characteristics, frequencies, trends, and categories by

investigating, observing, and measuring one or more variables. Further, it answers

what, where, when, and how questions.

The descriptive research design will be utilized in the study with the use of a

questionnaire checklist as a tool for gathering information and data about the

problem. The design will allow the researchers to describe the respondents,

variables, problems, and their connections. It will be used to find out the influence of

social media on the political views of the respondents.

TOMAS CLAUDIO COLLEGES – BASIC EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

Participants

The respondents of the study will be senior high school students of

Tomas Claudio Colleges. Using simple random sampling and Krejcie and Morgan’s

formula with a 0.05 alpha level and 95% confidence level, 261 students will be used

as the sources of data for the study. The researchers will use a sampling frame to

identify the final respondents. They will be described in terms of age, sex, grade,

strand, and track.

Research Instruments

To get a precise summary in this study, a researcher-made

questionnaire checklist will be used as the main instrument in data gathering. It is

composed of two parts.

The first part contains the personal profile of the respondents in terms of age,

sex, grade, strand, and track.

The second part is a self-assessment question that will allow the respondents

to evaluate the influence of social media on their political views in terms of social

media being used and frequency of use, presence of political information, and

dependency on political information.

Every question will be rated according to the scale below:

Scale Range Verbal Interpretation

5 4.51-5.00 Very Frequently
4 3.51-4.50 Frequently
3 2.51-3.50 Sometimes
2 1.51-2.50 Rarely
1 1.00-1.50 Never
TOMAS CLAUDIO COLLEGES – BASIC EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

Data Gathering Procedure

This study is guided by the GANTT chart of activities. A step-by-step process

was considered in making the first parts of the study. The researchers first formulate

the research topic and problem. Then, a title proposal and revision of the title were

conducted. After having the approved title, the researchers started to craft the

introduction. This includes crafting the background of the study, reviewing related

literature and studies, and creating variables that are related to the study. The

researchers proceeded in identifying the research design to be used, the

respondents, and make the questionnaire checklist after.

After formulating the introduction and methods, the researchers had a

colloquium. Then, the researchers made editing and revisions based on the

criticisms and comments of the panel members. And finally, the final copy of the

research proposal was submitted.
