SERVICE INFORMATION
If it is necessary to keep the crankshaft from rotating during engine service (such as
crankshaft pulley removal, etc.), use the new “Ring Gear Stopper” tool P/N J-45499.
• This tool applies ONLY to vehicles equipped with automatic transmission. To keep the
crankshaft from rotating on a manual transmission equipped vehicle, place the
transmission in gear and apply the parking brake.
• The new tool can be easily installed in the torque converter inspection opening on the
bell housing. Refer to the Service Procedure on page 2 for instructions.
• For additional information about this tool, refer to the Essential Tool Shipment Flyer,
page 3.
• J-45499 is an essential tool and was already sent to all Nissan dealers.
• Each dealer’s non-vehicle account will be billed $22.80 plus applicable taxes and freight
for this new tool.

2. Install the Ring Gear Stopper onto the lower front edge of the Bell Housing with one bolt
so it engages the teeth on the flex plate (see Figure 2).
NOTE: You may have to manually rotate the crankshaft slightly to allow the Ring Gear
Stopper to fully engage the flex plate teeth.

Ring Gear Stopper
Application: Frontier (4 Cylinder A/T)
Note: This special service tool was developed to hold the crankshaft
stationary during on-vehicle engine service such as camshaft sprocket
or crankshaft pulley removal. Use of this tool reduces the risk of
camshaft damage when loosening the cam sprocket mounting bolt.
Be sure to disconnect the negative battery cable prior to installing the ring gear stopper to prevent starting
attempts. You may need to manually rotate the crankshaft slightly to fully engage the stopper in the ring gear
teeth. On M/T vehicles, the ring gear stopper is not required since the transmission may be placed in gear
and the parking brake set to hold the engine stationary.

Note: This special service tool was developed to remove and replace
the lock ring on the fuel pump assembly when service or replacement is
required. The universal design enables this tool to be used on several
different Nissan models.
