Bishkek
Kyrgyzstan, country of Central Asia. Bishkek is the capital of the Kyrgyz Republic. Its
political, economic and cultural center. The city located at Chuy region, at the slopes of
the Kyrgyz Range, at about 700-900 metres above sea level, 25 km near to the Kazakh
Border. Bishkek is laid out on a grid with wide tree-lined streets. It has parks and many
orchards, and permanently snow-capped mountains are visible to the south. Besides the
various government buildings, there are theatres, the local Academy of Sciences , the
Kyrgyz State University , and agricultural, medical, polytechnic, and teacher-training
institutes. The total territory of the town is 127 km2, the territory with nearby villages
and areas is about 200 km2.
The total population of the city is 1,082,000 people. In Bishkek, the summers are hot,
dry, and mostly clear and the winters are freezing, snowy, and partly cloudy. Over the
course of the year, the temperature typically varies from -7.1° C to 32.4°C and is rarely
below -8° C or above 38°C.
In 1825 the Uzbek khanate of Kokand established on the site the fortress of Bishkek,
which in 1862 was captured by the Russians, who mistakenly called it Pishpek. By 1913
the population was 14,000 , and, though it was the administrative centre of a district, it
remained essentially a sprawling, dusty village. In 1924 it was chosen as the
administrative centre of the new Kyrgyz autonomous oblasty  province. When the latter
became the Kirgiz Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic in 1926, Pishpek became its
capital and was renamed Frunze after the revolutionary and Red Army leader Mikhail
Vasilyevich Frunze, who had been born there in 1885. It developed rapidly into a modern
city. In 1991 it was renamed Bishkek.
The city is popular with its famous marble city center with Ala-Too Square, the White
House, State Historical Museum with Manas Hero Statue nearby. State Museum of
Applied Arts with Kyrgyz Traditional handicraft examples and Frunze House Museum
could be interesting for most of the travelers interested in history. Osh Bazaar another
place to visit and open up the eastern bazaar traditions with colorful spicy rows, fresh
fruits, and vegetables at the green bazaar and huge rows of handicraft items at the branch
of Kiyal building. However, every guest of the city enjoys the cozy and chill park and
green areas of Panfilov Park, Oak Park, boulevard of Erkindik and Molodaya Gvardiya.
On the outskirts of Bishkek of 40 km, Ala-Archa National Park would be a great day-trip
to mountain slopes of Kyrgyz Range, with mixed forests and waterfall. Different routes
for different levels of difficulty could be chosen. Also you can hike Konorchek Kanyon,
visit Burana Tower, walk by the Victory Monument, go skiing in Chunkurchak.
