Architectural style
• Works embedded within the modern
movement,maintains an approach both
subjective and unconventional.

• Continuous experimentation in modern

architecture.

• His work spans across boundaries, from

mass housing developments to swimming
pools,banks,restaurents,art galleries.
• In,addition to cultural and social issues of
architecture,geography and climate are of
deep significance to siza‟s mindset.

• His concepts and designs do not have a pre-

established language.

• Sculptural architecture-connecting
buildings with site and culture.

• Inspiration from works of Antonio gaudi.

• His works remained largely unaffected in the

fall of modernism ,because,he gradually
transform his style over the decades.
LECA SWIMMING POOL COMPLEX
• Completion:1966
• Portugal
• Along leca de palmeria
beaches on northern
coastline.

• An example of his
careful
reconciliation
between nature and
his design.
PORTUGUESE NATIONAL PAVILION
• Architectural
centerpiece of
1998 lisbon
world exposition.
• Functions as a
monumental entry
gate to expo site.
• The most iconic element of the pavilion is the roof
covering of the ceremonial plaza which appears to
gently hang like a fabric canopy.
• The first idea was a hanging roof, but as a result of
the search for more fixed canopy, the solution is a
magnificent concrete slab of 20cm thickness,
• supported on steel cables that naturally hangs
between the two porticoes from which it is
suspended.
FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE,PORTO
• The buildings of the Porto architecture school are set
on a terraced site high above the estuary of the Douro
River.
• This area is bordered on three sides by highway exits
and by Campo Alegre street.
• The materials used - exotic wood for the floors and
wainscots, marble in the foyers and stairs, specially-
designed furniture for the classrooms, auditorium and
library, and skylights which draw natural light into
the main spaces.
IBERE CAMARGO MUSEUM
• the master of
Brazilian
expressionism.
• Settled into the lush
green hillside like a
giant sculpture, the
first building in
Brazil by Álvaro Siza.
• white concrete as the
main construction
material as a means to
establish a dialogue
with modern Brazilian
architecture.
• Concrete allows for
great flexibility in the
organization of
volumes and shapes.
In Brazil there is an
important tradition of
concrete utilization.
• The base of the building is a long
platform, 0.90 meters above street
level, under which part of the program
areas are located. The main building
volume cuts through the escarpment.
THE BUILDING ON WATER
• one of the world‟s largest combined soda ash and
ammonium chloride production plants.
• The concept was to create a building that would blend
seamlessly with the most important element in the
manufacturing process of glass, water.
• office building over the 100,000m2 artificial lake
(and water reservoir) of the vast industrial complex.
• The Building On the
Water took four years to
design and construct.
• Meticulously built in
white exposed concrete.
• The form contrasts
with the orthogonal
shapes of the factory
complex.

• the curvilinear form

measures over 300m
in length, comprising
two levels above
water and a total
built floor area of
approximately
11,000 sqm.
“his shapes, molded by light, have a
deceptive simplicity about them; they are
honest.... That simplicity, upon closer
examination however, is revealed as
great complexity. There is a subtle
mastery underlying what appears to be
natural creations.”
