Direct Vertical Illuminance at a Point
Direct vertical illuminance at a point for a point sources is given by
Equation 29:
I
E pv = 2
cos2 ( ) sin( )
h
I
E pv = cos( ) sin( )
2h
Where h is vertical distance between light source and point of
interest.
Typical Exam Problems:
1. A lamp with 4002 lumen output consumes a current of 0.25A at 230 V and Cosφ=0.8.
Calculate the power consumed by the lamp and its luminous efficacy (η)?
2. A uniform source of light with 500cd in all direction below the lamp is installed at 3m
above the ground. Calculate E at a point P that is directly under the lamp and at a point 2m
far away from P. Determine the total flux of light within a circular area of 2m2.
3. E at a point on the working plane directly under the lamp is 250 lux. If the lamp gives a
uniform light intensity of 1000 cd determine the height at which the lamp is suspended.
Find the illumination at a point on the working plane 2.5m away from the vertical axis of
the lamp.
4. A lamp of an intensity of 10000 lumen per steradian is hung 6m over the center of the
floor of a 15x15m hall. Find the direct illuminance on the floor under the lamp and corners
of the hall.
6. A uniform intensity light source is fitted on a height of 10m of a section of a road. The
illuminance at a point B away from the vertical axis of the lamp say point A is just fifth of
that at point A. Find the how far is point B from A?
