Lighting and Wiring Design

Half-Term Exam January-2010 Time 2h 15 marks
Q1. Answer the following questions briefly.
A- What are the primary colours of light and the primary colors of objects ? [1]
B- What would be the appearance of a red object lighted by a blue-green light? [1]
C- There are four types of surfaces reflectance, list three of them. [1]
D- CIE classified six groups of luminaires according to the percentages of total luminaire
output emitted above and below horizontal. List four of the six CIE luminaires. [1]
E- List three geometric shapes that almost all reflector shapes can be attributed to. [1]

Q2. Design a lighting installation for an office with L=20m; W=12m and 3.25m height to
maintain an E=500lx±5% on a horizontal working plane of 0.75m, using ceiling maintained
fluorescent luminaires of 0.85 lm/W lamp efficacy. The reflectance of the ceiling, walls and
floor are 0.8, 0.6 and 0.15 respectively. Assume SHR=1, MF=0.8. The required utilization
factors are given in the table below. [5]

Q3. A roadway lighting installation was designed to maintain an average illuminance of

E=15lx, using single high pressure sodium (SON) lamps. The spacing between luminaires is
38m and other dimensions are as shown in Figure-1.
a- Calculate the lumen output of the SON lamps that maintain the required illuminance
assuming MF=0.725 and utilization factors of 0.059 and 0.35 for the kerb and road sides
respectively: [2]
b- If the efficacy of the SON lamps is 105lm/W what is its wattage? [1]
c- If luminaires direct the light within a solid angle dω=6 [sr], [2]
find the Illuminance E at point M in the middle of the road. Hanging=3m

h=10m θ

Kerb=2.0m
