Dog Registration and Vaccine Requirements in Portugal
Dog Registration and Vaccine Requirements in Portugal
Back home:
1- Get complete shot records for your pet from your veterinarian in the USA to include
inoculation date, expiration date, manufacturer, brand name, and LOT/Serial number.
Note: the expiration date should depict if the one-year or the three-year vaccines
were issued, PT generally only uses the one year vaccines, so it's important to
prove validity and avoid over inoculation.
2- Get a Microchip Certificate (PT uses the 15 digit microchip readers, not the old 10
digit ones): the certificate can be either the "new microchip implanted", or the "existing
microchip verified one".
In Portugal:
4- Get your pet an Antiparasitic collar- (Prevendog protects against Ticks, Mosquito,
and Sand Flies which can transmit Leishmaniasis).
5- Get your dog the Leishmaniasis Vaccine (For dogs only- not administered in the
USA)
6- Register the pet microchip in the national Portuguese database, [Sistema de
Identificaçãode Animais de Companhia (SIAC)]

exam required within 3 days of each trip).

pet to use on trains or present to the local Freguesias at annual registrations.
Official Portuguese pet shot-records (Boletim sanitário de cães e gatos) lists the

The legislation for Portugal states that dogs must be suitably restrained in a separate
passenger area where they cannot interfere with your driving. When they say restrained
this means using a special lead that is fitted into the seatbelt, which for your dogs safety
and to prevent injury to their neck it should be used with a suitable dog harness.
Alternatively they should be contained in a crate/travelling kennel or behind dog guards.
