Assignment 2: Kinematics

1. A car going 20 m/s skids to a stop in a distance of 30 m. Assume uniform deceleration. Find
the time taken to stop and the acceleration. [3.0 s, −6.67 m/s2]

2. A car is timed as it passes two posts that are 30 m apart. It takes 2.0 s. If the car’s speed is
40 km/h at the first post, what is its speed at the second post? Assume uniform acceleration.
[18.9 m/s]

3. A stone is dropped from a bridge to the river below. It takes 3.0 s for the stone to strike the
water. How high is the bridge above the river? [44.1 m]

4. Suppose that the ball in projectile motion is thrown horizontally with speed of 30 m/s. It is
1.50 m above the level ground when released. How far will it go before it hits the ground?
[16.59 m]

5. A ball is thrown with velocity 20 m/s at an angle of 37º above the horizontal. How high does it
go? How far has it moved horizontally at that time? [7.4 m, 19.6 m]

6 The maximum deceleration a car can have on dry pavement is about 6 m/s2. What is the
minimum time a car would take to stop if it is going at 20 m/s? Ignore the driver’s reaction
time. [3.33 s]

7 A car accelerating uniformly is going 6.0 m/s when it passes one checkpoint. It passes a
second checkpoint 100 m away 10.0 s later. What is its acceleration? What is its speed at the
second checkpoint? [0.8 m/s2, 14 m/s]

8 How long does it take for a stone to fall from a bridge to the water 13.0 m below? How fast is
the stone going just before it hits the water? [1.63 s, 15.99 m/s]

9. (a) How fast must a ball be thrown if it is to rise to a height of 20 m? (b) How long will it take
to reach that height? [19.8 m/s, 2.02 s]

10. A ball is thrown horizontally with a speed of 15 m/s at a point 2.0 m above the level ground.
How far will it go before it hits the ground? [9.58 m]

11. What is the range of a projectile fired across level ground with a velocity of 100 m/s at an
angle of 300 above the horizontal? [882.8m]

12. The range of a projectile along flat ground is 20 m when the projectile is shot at an angle of
53º above horizontal. What is the initial speed of the projectile? [14.29 m/s]

13. A rifle with a muzzle velocity of 200 m/s is fired with its barrel horizontally at a height of 1.5 m
above. (a) How long is the bullet in the air? (b) How far away from the rifle does the bullet
strike the ground? (c) If the muzzle velocity were 150 m/s, would there be any difference in
these answers? Prove your answer. [0.55s, 110m, Yes.]

14. A shooting-range target is fired vertically and reaches its maximum height of 185 m.
(a) Determine the initial velocity of the target.
(b) Determine the time taken to reach the maximum height.
(c) Determine the time taken to reach 75 m.
