1. Name at least two functions of a phlebotomist.

- A phlebotomist is a skilled health professional who draws and extracts blood samples
for testing infections and health problems. Labeling and storing blood samples and
containers is one of the duties of a phlebotomist.

2. Name various reasons bloodletting (early phlebotomy) was performed.

- Bloodletting, also known as phlebotomy, is the procedure of removing blood from an


individual's veins for medical reasons thousand years ago. Many folks assumed that this
process was used as a treatment to remove impurities from an individual's body, such
as fluids, to cure the illnesses.

3.  An elderly in-patient was due for blood extraction as per the request of her physician.
Upon approaching the patient, she refused to let you extract her blood. What will you do in
this situation?

- As a phlebotomist incharge of blood extraction, I will explain why blood extraction is


required to examine blood samples that results from prescribing treatments.

4. During your scheduled morning phlebotomy rounds, one of the in-patients mistook you for
a nursing-aid. She asked you to clean out her soiled sheets and bed pan. How will you
respond to this situation?

- As a phlebotomist, I will honestly tell the patient about my work at a particular


healthcare facility. That m y job involves collecting blood, examining samples,
labeling and storing blood samples collected from patients.
