Story Line:
Banaue Rice Terraces
The Banaue Rice Terraces are a National
Cultural Treasure of the Philippines and are
considered to be the 8th Natural Wonder of
the World by many Filipinos. The view is
spectacular, majestic and
inspiring. The Banaue Rice Terraces are
located on the mountains of Ifugao and
were carved there about 2,000 years ago by
the ancestors of the present-day Philippines.
It is said that they were built by hand and
were used to plant rice.
Here are some interesting facts about the
Banaue Rice Terraces:
1. They are located about 1500 meters
(5,000 Ft.) above the sea level on a 10,360
square kilometers (about 6000 square
miles) mountainside.

2. The terraces are irrigated by water from

catchment areas in the rainforests above it.

3. Today, although a few Ifugaos still plant

vegetables on the terraces, most prefer
concentrating on the tourist dollars
brought by those who want to see the
historic terraces.

4. Since many young Ifugaos are not

interested in farming, the soil on the
terraces has started eroding and some of
the terraces had to be redone.

5. The people of the province love having

fun during the festival of tunggul. During
the festival, they drink bayah or rice beer,
eat rice cakes, and chew betel nut.

Mayon Volcano

Active volcano, southeastern Luzon,

Philippines, dominating the city of
Legaspi. Called the world’s most perfect
volcanic cone because of the symmetry of
its shape, it has a base 80 miles (130 km) in
circumference and rises to 8,077 feet (2,462
metres) from the shores of Albay Gulf.

Popular with climbers and campers, the

volcano is the centre of Mayon Volcano
National Park (21 square miles [55 square
km]). There are large abaca plantations on
its lower slopes. There have been more
than 30 eruptions recorded since 1616. An
eruption in 1993 caused 79 deaths.
Subsequent eruptions in 2000, 2006, 2009,
2014, and 2018 forced tens of thousands of
people in nearby villages to evacuate. In
December 2006, rains from powerful
Typhoon Durian caused mudslides and
floods at the foot of the volcano that killed
more than 1,000 people. Its most
destructive eruption was in 1814, when the
town of Cagsawa was buried and
approximately 1,200 people were killed.

Rizal Park

Also known as Luneta Park, Manila’s

iconic 58-hectare park is considered as one
of the most historical places in Manila
because this is where Jose Rizal was
executed on December 30, 2896—the day
that led to a revolution.

His remains were dumped in an unmarked

grave at the Paco Cemetery but in 1898, it
was transferred to the Rizal Park
monument in Luneta under American
rule.

You can experience a calm environment

away from the city’s hustle and bustle
when in Luneta. The park has also become
a favorite leisure spot in Manila. Here are
some of the best tourist spots to visit near
the location of Rizal Park.

main island of the Philippines (Luzon).

Shown in the above image, almost

everyone thought that it is the volcano
itself. Looking at the aerial view below,
what is being seen by the Tagaytay Ridge
is actually the “Binintiang Malaki (Big
Leg)” located at the upper part of the
image, that was the center of 1707 and
1715 eruption.

Being part of the Pacific Ring if Fire, Taal

Volcano has caused loss of lives estimated
between 5,000 to 6,000. This is based on
the 33 recorded eruption since 1572 to
2011. Taal Volcano was also designated as
a decade volcano.

Records also say that volcano eruptions

deposited pyroclastic material as far as
where Manila, the capital of the
Philippines, is.

The volcano island is made of multiple and

overlapping cones and craters. Only 47
have been identified which are 26 tuff
cones, 5 cinder cones and 4 maars.

People settled around the volcano even

though several warnings have been issued
by the Philippine government agency
PHILVOCS (Philippine Institute of
Volcanology and
Seismology). Communities around the
island earns their living by farming crops
made rich by the volcanic soil and fishing
mainly tilapia which is one of the sought “ Of course Teacher”
