Introduction
Cleaning dirt in and outside a house can be done using traditional broom effectively. However, for
cleaning the nooks and corners of some machinery like cars, computers, keyboards etc. it is difficult to
use a broom or brush. In such situation vacuum cleaner is the solution. However, a vacuum cleaner is
very costly for the common man and hence in this project we will display how to make one using our
waste generated.
Scientific Principle involved
A vacuum cleaner works on Bernoulli’s theorem modified such that, whenever wind velocity
increases air pressure decreases and vice versa.

Materials required
1) Old 1.5litre Cold drink plastic bottle
2) A small DC motor (from printer, toy car etc.)
3) Glue and cellotape
4) Old deodorant bottle
5) An old mosquito net rag
6) Switch (from old gadget)
7) Old hose pipe(preferably from washing machine)

Construction
A used 1.5 litre Cold Drink bottle is taken and the inner segment of about 5cm is cut and
removed. The upper end is covered where the cut is made with an old mosquito net. The mosquito net is
neatly cut and is fixed using a cellotape. At the other segment of the bottle, the bottom is drilled at many
places using either a drill or a hot iron rod for the flow of air. The old deodorant bottle is then cut to make
four blades of fan. The fan are then fit on a bottle cap which is then glued to the DC motor shaft. The
other end of the DC motor is glued to a bottle cap which is also glued to the bottom of the bottle as shown
in the figure. The positive and negative wire of the DC motor is fitted to a switch which is fixed on the
top of the bottle. The switch is further connected to a 12V battery. The bottle neck is fit with a hose pipe
and glued.
Working
When the switch is turned on, the motor spins the fan which blow air towards the bottom of the
bottle with holes. Due to this pressure is low at the back of the bottle. The other side of the bottle has
higher pressure and thus push the air in it towards the fan. While moving, the air from outside the bottle
neck is sucked through the hose pipe. This sucking of air bring along the dirt which is lying nearby the
hosepipe.

Advantages
1. Vacuum cleaner can clean places inaccessible by broom or brush.
2. Car Vacuum cleaner cost around ` 800 and above. However this cleaner cost practically
nothing as all of the parts can be salvaged for free. The only cost will be either a battery or a
12V adapter.
