BACKGROUND OF WEDDING INDUSTRY

Wedding as an industry is huge with a growth rate of 25-30% annually with over Rs 4,00,000 crore.
Each year almost more than1 crore takes place in India. After pandemic weddings are back with a
bang. Indians have a craze of big fat wedding especially destination weddings which are most trendy
in recent times. Hence, they are ready to spend any amount without expecting any monetary return.
Be it a wedding planner, photographer, resorts, caterer or anyone related to wedding business eagerly
waits for the wedding season so they can push their business. Mostly the wedding season seen in India
is in the months of starting from October to January and from April to May. Most of the weddings
take place in between October and December. Estimated spending in a wedding varies on the budget
of client and it is usually between Rs 5 lakh to Rs 5 crore in India, few clients also have a budget more
than that. Whereas talking about the fee of a wedding planner it starts from 1 lakh and goes up to 30
lakh and more depending on the size of the else. They charge 15%-20% of client’s total wedding
budget.
There are currently about 1.25 billion people living in India, and given that the average family has
five members, there are about 250 million families there. The nation averages about 10 million
weddings per year, or one every 20 years for a family. Every marriage in the nation spends 30 to 40
grammes of gold on average; as a result, the total amount of gold consumed each year ranges from
300 to 400 tonnes. People in India are ready to spend one fifth of their total wealth in weddings which
gives a good business opportunity to planners and other suppliers related to wedding to earn a good
amount of money.

WEDDING INDUSTRY REPORT 2021-2022 (Covid period)

Covid has drastically affected everyone’s life including wedding business too. Where people had
dreams to have huge fairy tale wedding, they had to settle for weddings at their place. It was a total
loss for event companies and vendors related to weddings. Many companies waited for pandemic to
get over and keep postponing their wedding whereas few of them planned to get married at their,
guests attending the wedding online. Online websites like WedMeGood and WeddingWire surveyed
more than 3000 users and found out different aspect of changes in spending pattern of the users.

➢ Size of Weddings: Government had incorporated rules and regulations related to

guestlist in all the weddings. According to the 2019 Global Wedding Report, pre-
COVID marriages had an average of 524 attendees, whereas weddings in 2021 had
an average guest count of just 117.
26 percent of the participants reported that the number of guests at their wedding was
between 26 and 50. This was the most secure number to proceed with wedding
ceremony planning in 2021 while keeping in mind numerous wedding constraints.
24% said they had a wedding with between 101 and 150 guests. A 51–75 person
guest list was used by 16%. 4% of those polled admitted to having more than 300

The pie chart clearly depicts the guest list has been severly affected due to pandemic. Where people
wanted to invite more than 300 guests most of them invited just 26-50 only.

➢ Change in the booking of vendors: Pandemic not just affected the size, budget,
norms of the wedding but also, we saw a change in the booking of vendors. It was
way too different from what it used to be before.

From the above graph we can see the spending pattern of customers in covid. Before the pandemic
customers used to keep venue and decoration as the most important aspect. And now, 50% budget has

been reduced for venue. Most people reported spending less on wedding venues, catering,
entertainment, bartender, planning, and decor, which were the most impacted categories. 10% paid
less for mehandi artist & makeup artists. Only 2% of consumers reported spending less on wedding
clothing and jewellery, though, therefore these categories did not experience a sizable decline in
spending. Photography where just 5% of users reported paying less.

LITERATURE REVIEW
FUTURE TRENDS IN WEDDING INDUSTRY
This article talks about future trends of Indian wedding industry. If government regulations allowed,
73 percent of couples in India and 87 percent worldwide do not want to limit the number of guests
attending their weddings, while 87 percent in India and 90 percent worldwide do not anticipate
reducing their spending. However, the impact has undoubtedly prompted many wedding professionals
to upscale both their businesses and themselves as well as to embrace technology for the future by
enhancing their online presence and managing end-to-end solutions over the phone, both for the
wedding ceremony itself or its planning. With the aid of technology, such as Zoom calls or digital
invitations, we are already seeing weddings with limits, which expands the range of alternatives for
Indian couples. According to Ankur Sarawagi, India Country Head for The Knot Worldwide, "the
wedding business after COVID-19 will have a new reality that will follow new wedding patterns
while keeping in mind health and safety guidelines and rethinking the guest experience."
According to the wedding technology platform, the following trends will continue to influence
weddings and the industry as a whole. Instead of welcome kits, visitors will be given sanitization kits
and requested to obtain a medical certificate. After the event, the wedding planning team will phone
the guests to make sure the invitees are healthy. Shift weddings allow couples to hold their wedding
day celebrations at their original location and with their entire team of wedding vendors, but guests
arrive in shifts, enabling them to follow social-distancing rules. The majority of venues have stated
that they will most likely choose a sit-down plated meal rather than a buffet.
Along with the wedding website link, guests may be sent and whatsapped these digital invitation
cards. While weddings take on different forms, what never changes are the need for interpersonal
connection and the joy of sharing love with those closest to us. So, it won’t matter how the weddings
looks like in the end its all about love and togetherness. (S. Jain, 2020)

IMPACT OF COVID-19 ON WEDDINGS

This is an effort to assess and investigate how Covid-19 has affected the Indian wedding market. The
Indian wedding industry has greatly prospered during the past ten years. The pandemic has caused the
broader industry to stall and slow operations. Numerous planned marriages have been called off as a
result. Depending on the rites and festivities, a wedding in India can last up to 6 days.
The extensive Covid-19 pandemic epidemic has caused a huge shift in the Indian wedding business.
This essay aims to examine how the global pandemic has affected the Indian industry. The study
relies on secondary data to gather information for its analysis.
Over the past ten years, there has been a significant transformation in the Indian wedding sector.
According to a recent statistic, the wedding industry in India is worth $50 billion. The Indian wedding
business is made up of a number of sub-industries that are in charge of the economy's ongoing
development and improvement. Numerous online dating services, usually referred to as wedding
websites, help people find mates online.

Anushree Jain Wedding Planning 11

The regulations state that a function's overall attendance should not exceed 100 people, but should not
surpass 50% of the wedding hall's capacity. The Covid-19 rules for weddings in the state have been
updated by the UP government. The new rules are in effect starting on November 27, 2020, and will
last through May 18, 2021. It specifies that DJs and wedding bands are not considered guests who are
welcome to attend a wedding.
After the Covid-19 pandemic occurred, couples who had planned to get married in 2020 were among
many who were disappointed. One of the first sectors to be affected was the Indian wedding industry,
which completely stopped overnight. Businesses that depend on weddings and other events are feeling
the effects of the Covid-19 outbreak severely. The sector is experiencing a significant revenue hiccup.
Businesses involved in weddings and events are predicted to lose $670 million in 2019 and 2020 due
to downsizing, postponements, and cancellations.
The $50 billion wedding market is back in business, so a recovery is likely. Wedding registries, which
let engaged couples make a wish list of items from online or digital catalogues, are growing in
popularity. This global pandemic has adversely affected the wedding industry. Professionals in the
wedding industry are attempting to re-enter it. Technology is being incorporated to allow families and
couples to remotely connect throughout the event.
All across, consumers' priorities have altered. The $50 billion Indian wedding market is preparing for
a busy winter. The wedding industry is threatened by the coronavirus as the lockdown is extended.
Zankyou, a foreign suitor, is lining up at the Big Fat Indian Wedding Market to woo brides and
groomsmen. (Kumar, Mashooq, 2021)

CUSTOMERS INTENTION FOR HIRING WEDDING PLANNERS

Understanding the determinants behind consumer hiring intentions for wedding planners was the
study's main objective. There were 481 responses in all, of whom 202 were men and 279 were
women. When assessing the qualities of a good wedding planner, it was discovered that customers
wanted their wedding planner to be excellent listener, polite, and useful. The most crucial services, on
which customers did not want to skimp, were those involving catering and venue selection. In this
study, the dependent variable is intention to employ a wedding planner. It was discovered that five
factors—perception, attitude, motivation, trust, and social pressure—accounted for 76.50% of the
variance. This can also be read as evidence that enough variables have been taken into account to
assess consumer intentions towards hiring wedding planners.
Although the wedding industry has always been thriving, it is now more widely known. The process
of hiring wedding planners is simple. Some shoppers are prepared to organise a party despite their
limited resources. It is crucial to comprehend what buyers are expecting as a result. Consumers and
clients are willing to surrender their ambitions and needs when there is a rush, but it is important to
determine what they actually expect. The study has concentrated on the key elements that influence
consumers' decisions to hire a wedding planner in a significant way.
For businesses to survive in the market, there is a need to alter consumer perceptions and foster
consumer trust. The wedding market is overflowing with suppliers, vendors, and planners, which adds
to its complexity.
A single memory of tying a knot with your lover cannot be replaced.
Consumers are wary because they understand that even simple items would be scrutinised by wedding
guests. It is crucial that consumers convey their feelings and expectations honestly. The findings
indicated that persistent societal pressure had an impact on people's intentions to hire specialists for
wedding planning. This also shows the negative side of society, where a lot of individuals are subtly
pressured to spend more money than they can afford in order to appease others. As a result, wedding

Anushree Jain Wedding Planning 12

planners have a greater need to develop techniques that will be profitable for them while also assisting
clients in navigating social pressure. The study has given wedding planners guidance on how to win
customers' trust by altering their perception.
Wedding planners will be encouraged to work with clients by providing services that fit their budget
and lessen the pressure from others. Wedding planners should consider innovations to swap out pricey
services for affordable ones. (H. Kashyap, M. Lal and S. Makhija,2020)

FUTURE TRENDS IN WEDDING PLANNING IN CALIFORNIA

This survey evaluated 50 wedding planners from all throughout California's future wedding planning
trends. The data indicated that there are several wedding trends that may be observed both now and in
the future, however these particular wedding planners did not anticipate many changes in wedding
patterns over the following five years. The season, budget, and size of the wedding were the only
factors that varied in trend predictions for weddings. Wedding planners must stay up to date with
these shifting trends because they are continuously changing. All of California's regions made
remarkably similar trend predictions for the following five years.
Based on the planners' regions in California, there were only marginal variations in their projections
of wedding patterns. With 150 guests, the typical wedding budget was estimated to be roughly
$50,000. Compared to brides in Central California or Southern California, Northern California brides
are more likely to adopt trends like 1920s-inspired attire, food trucks, photojournalism, and outdoor
locations. Because it is one of the most beautiful seasons, fall is anticipated to be the most well-liked
season for weddings. Only the ten wedding planners who provided responses to the questionnaire can
be included in this study.
The study could find more precise variations in predictions based on the various Californian regions if
more people participated. A study was done to find out what trends wedding planners think the market
would follow over the next five years. The study can provide California wedding planners some
insight into potential future wedding trends. The "glamorous" and "do-it-yourself" styles, as well as
the "natural" and "vintage" trends, are the wedding trends for 2013. With the arrival of food trucks
and a rise in wedding spending, the trends in food and finances are most likely to shift.
Depending on where in California you find wedding planners, you might get slightly different
projections for future wedding trends. Compared to Northern and Central California planners,
Southern California planners forecast substantially greater wedding costs and attendance numbers.
(Ruonala,2013)

THE LIAISON BETWEEN WEDDING EXPENSES AND INDIA ECONOMY

There are approximately 250 million families in India, which has a population of 1.25 billion people
and a normal family size of five members. Every marriage in the country spends an average of 30 to
40 grammes of gold, so 300 to 400 tonnes of gold are used overall each year. The marriage industry is
poised to boom more than ever over the next five to ten years with 50% of India's population under
the age of 29. For the 10 million marital unions that take place in India each year, the wedding card
market is worth between Rs 8000 and Rs 10,000 crore. While creative wedding planners are also
utilising it, classic tentwallas still hold the apex.
Bregeut introduced their extravagant watches priced between Rs. 8 and Rs. 15 lakh in the Indian
market. Even Star Cruises launched a trip to Lakshwadeep that was primarily targeted at
honeymooners. The wedding market in India is thought to be worth $40 billion (around Rs. 2.5 lakh
crore). Wedding planners charge 10 percent of the whole cost of the wedding package as conference
charges, which is a hefty price to pay for making weddings significant. Weddings continue to be a

Anushree Jain Wedding Planning 13

steady business despite economic downturns since they are an uncommon occurrence for the great
majority of Indians.
Wedding planners make a lot of money off of Christian, Hindu, and Muslim marriages. Wedding
planners are now providing services like adorning the mandap designed for Hindu weddings in
response to the rise in interreligious unions. For a modest wedding, a simple floral arrangement can be
created for Rs. 20,000; while, an ornate arrangement at a hotel can cost up to Rs. 5,000. The
advantage of destination weddings is greater because property owners already have lighting, a
foundation, and an exterior in place. The castle administration may end up winning 30-35 of every
rupee, or about Rs. 1.7 crore, for a wedding with an incredibly modest budget of Rs. 5 lakh. The
Indian wedding market is expanding at a rate of nearly 25% a year. (Madaan,2015)

GROWTH OF WEDDING TOURISM

The success of wedding tourism continues to be propelled by a variety of emotional and economic
factors. The main wedding tourism market segments are comprised of destination wedding couples
and guests, as well as honeymoon tourists. Weddings abroad market segments can be divided into first
time marriages, re-marriages, same-sex marriages and commitment ceremonies. Wedding tourism has
increased in popularity over the past decade and is recognized as a significant market segment for
destinations to target. The high divorce rate, between forty to fifty percent in the United States, has
been identified as a factor that will continue to drive demand for destination weddings.
The number of destination weddings in the United States has increased by 200 percent in the last
decade. The desire to honeymoon abroad has also increased, with 70 percent of consumers wanting to
travel there from 57 percent in 2008 to 2010 (Mintel, 2010). New Zealand's report on wedding
tourism revealed the growth in the niche market. The global market for wedding tourism is estimated
to be between three and six million trips annually. In India, this niche market was increasing by
almost one hundred percent per year as of 2011.
According to Poon (2009), UK residents traveling abroad for weddings spend an $ over $6 million
annually. The financial impacts of wedding tourism are strong, particularly since consumers tend to
be more concerned with quality than price. Revenues generated per wedding may total as much as
between R600,000 (98,360 USD) and R 1 million (163,934 USD). One third of American wedding
tourists are willing to spend over $2500 on their honeymoon. Trend within wedding tourism towards
more innovative locations has opened up more opportunities for destinations.
Growing segments to target include the innovative weddings market, green weddings market and gay
and lesbian wedding tourism. The green weddings market has been identified as a segment that will
grow in response to the trend towards sustainable living. The UNWTO report highlights the increase
in preference for destination weddings among same-sex couples. Wedding tourism is a growing niche
market that has impacted destinations on all continents. With demand predicted to continue
increasing, this sector will grow in its importance to the tourism industry. New opportunities for host
destinations and service providers are emerging as the industry evolves. (J breg , 2013)

TRENDS IN LAST 10 YEARS
Major players in wedding industry since last 10 years:
1. THE WEDDING DESIGN COMPANY: Founded in the year 2003. A company in

things to internet to showcase.

Success factors:

Anushka , Priyanka & Nick , etc.

Challenges:

➢ Getting to know the vision and clarity of couple. As few couple have clarity whereas
some don’t have any vision.
➢ Keeping up with privacy.
➢ Security
➢ Getting Closure & Approvals

Success Factors:
• They believe in each shaadi is special.
• Adding couple personality to wedding.
• Paying attention to finer elements.
• Keeping things real & honest.

WEDDING INDUSTRY 10 YEARS BACK

Even 10 years back in 2012 weddings were used to be with full bang especially after movie Band
Baja Baraat which was showcased in the year 2010. Since then the industry is growing 20-25%
every year. Wedding industry was considered as inflation free industry. There was a time in
between wedding season in 2012 when during a weekend alone 10,000 weddings were planned in
Delhi. Crores were earned in that week. Though during those times wedding planning
business was not at all organised with dew number of planners in the market. The average

TRENDS CHANGED FROM 2010 TO NOW

With changing budget , growth and few other factors of which wedding industry trends have
taken a drastic change. Some of the changing wedding trends noticed by the industry are:

1. Age of bride & groom: Usually the bride used to get married in her early twenties but
with the times changing and modernizing the age at which bride now gets married is in her
late 20’s or early 30’s. And the reason behind it is even the girl wants to be independent
before settling. Not only the bride’s age but also the groom age has gone up. It is now around
34.
2. Guest list: In early 20’s the guest count was usually a big number , the family wanted to
invite everyone they know in their contacts which eventually lead to chaos but with changing

Anushree Jain Wedding Planning 18

trends the guest list has been reduced. In the early times the average number of people
invited to the wedding were around 500 but now it has been reduced to 100-200. One of the
main reason for this change is that now people wants to interact to their close ones at a
intimate level.
3. Spending per Guest: With guest list been decreased spending per guest has been
increased. It is because the cost of everything has gone up. And the family wants to give
more personalised feel to the guests.
4. Changes in wedding clothes: not just the guest list on the spending have been changed
but even the clothing fashion have been changed year to year before the bride used to wear
lehenga with dark colours like red pink purple but now the brides are going for aesthetic
colours like cream and few of them are also changing their whole culture rather than wearing
lehengas in the wedding they have shifted to dresses not only the brides but also the grooms
rather than wearing sherwanis they have shifted to tuxedos.
5. Eco friendly weddings: Families are more cautious on keeping the environment safe.
Hence, many of them have shifted to eco friendly weddings. Most of them opt for digital
cards and save the date rather than offline invitations. The décor pattern have also changed ,
there are sustainable décor options now for the ones opting for eco friendly weddings to
reduce the wastage.
6. Change in wedding season: In 2010 summer season was said to be season of weddings.
The month of June & July was packed with back-to-back weddings. With the love for dance ,
it was meant summers are not meant for wedding because of the scorching heat. The wedding
season has changed to November , December & February mainly winter season. This is also
because you can enjoy more aesthetic décor during winters and nice colours to wear in cold.
7. Outdoor Weddings: Prior weddings used to take inside usually in the banquet hall or in a
premises with walls. Now as the trends are changing people have shifted to outdoor
weddings which takes place in lawns, garden , farmhouses etc.
8. Traditions: We can see a huge shift in traditions. Now there is a trend of pheras during
afternoon and then reception in the night. People have started planning rituals like
bachelorette, after party , cocktail party , pool party , camp etc. Weddings are now more fun
rather than just religious things. Its more like a holiday for the guests.
9. Destination weddings: A lot more people want to opt for destination weddings rather than
planning the wedding at their place. A major reason for this is now everyone want to invite
only their closed ones.
10. Social media : Posting images not only on their personal account but having own hashtag
Instagram account is on a trend now a days.
11. Live band : We can see a major shift in the preference of music , there used to be DJ
present in the weddings as it was meant to be a priority but now we can see a live band or a
live singer present at the weddings. And everyone dance on the tune of the live singer which
is soothing as well as pleasant to hear.
12. Signage & photobooth : More use of signage in the wedding venue , 10 years back there
was no trend of signage or photobooth. Now there are props also present near the
photobooth.
Apart from this there are many more trends which are changing and we would see a lot more
changes in the trends in the coming future.

FUTURE TRENDS OF WEDDING INDUSTRY IN INDIA
In the previous part, we read how the wedding industry has changed in the last 10 years. In the
coming future most, weddings are going to be tech savvy with lots of new trends. Already the post
pandemic weddings have been accustomed to new trends. With minimised guest list, food trucks,
meta and what not we would be able to experience weddings like never before. Priority being given to
religious rituals would convert to mini ceremonies. Let’s look how the future of wedding industry
trends in India look like in the coming years:

1. Guest list: This will get more affected in the coming years. People would like to have more
intimate wedding with just 30-50 close people. The young generation would believe more on
saving money and utilising them on things like their honeymoon, personalisation, etc.
2. Covid norms: yes, the new normal. People are accustomed of social distancing now. Few of
the Covid protocols would always take place in weddings like wearing masks, sanitising,
maintaining social distancing, inviting limited people, etc.
3. Drones: The World is changing so is the technology. Technology is growing at a rapid
speed. Drones would be used for floral shower, making videos. It is a good way of using
Artificial Intelligence in weddings.
4. Robots: With AI & machine learning expanding, it would be good to see AI taking over the
wedding industry. Think about this way robots welcoming you in the wedding, robots coming
in your room for room service and also entertaining you when you have nothing to do. This
would be a good way to interact with guests and also reduce your workload.
5. Metaverse: Missed the wedding? Not to worry metaverse is there for you. Metaverse in
weddings experience the weddings like never before. Think about your lost relative in your
wedding giving a 3D look. This definitely have a good scope in the market.
6. Wedding in shifts: Everyone of us have heard about schools and colleges in shifts. Soon in
the future we would see wedding in shifts different functions at different time with different
guests at every function. This would reduce chaos and also let the main family interact with
their guests without anyone complaining about the same.
7. Wedding dates: Soon no one would believe in priest recommendation or sayaa dates. The
wedding would be done on the basis of availability of venue, wedding planner, etc.
8. Food & beverage: Food is something where most of the crowd is seen during wedding. On
conversing with few of the hotels the future of food & beverage is where everyone prefers for
a sit-down meal and plated meals rather than buffet system. Also, few of them would like to
go for live counters & food trucks. The menu would see a change rather than oily dishes
healthier & vegan options can be seen assuming the youth is more focusing on healthy eating
habits.
9. Digitalise: With E invites on a boom slowly & steadily everything is shifting to online.
Many of the guests are being invited to watch digital wedding on zoom, there is option for
live streaming of wedding. Couple prefer to make their own wedding website to showcase the
videos, images and their story.
10. Mini yet luxury wedding: The big fat wedding will be changed to the not so big wedding
or the small fat wedding which is miniature version yet luxurious.
11. Personalization: The couple has shifted to everything personalization from their menus to
outfit. I would like to state it: From a clip-on head to nail of toes everything is personalised.
So the trend for personalisation would have big market in the coming years.
12. Clothing system: No one would want to spend money on those heavy lehengas or sherwani
which are not used again. Instead they would want to buy it on rental basis and return it after
wedding. It actually makes sense to utilise that money and use it somewhere needed.

WEDDING INDUSTRY 2022

With 3.2 million events planned for the period of November 2022 to February 2023, a
substantial increase from 2.5 million a year earlier, the $50 billion wedding sector in India
seemed to have recovered from the pandemic troubles.
This season, spending is predicted to increase from last year's Rs 3 lakh crore to Rs 3.75 lakh
crore. The peak time for floral demand is during the wedding season. Weddings probably use
up two-thirds of the flowers sold each year. However, fresh flowers have increased in price
over the past several years, therefore many individuals are choosing a combination of fresh
and fake flowers. An estimated Rs 3 lakh will be spent on each of the approximately 5 lakh
weddings, while an estimated Rs 5 lakh will be spent on each of the approximately 10 lakh
marriages. Ten million weddings will cost Rs 10 lakh apiece, five million will cost Rs 25 lakh
each, fifty thousand will cost Rs fifty lakh each, and another fifty thousand will cost Rs one
crore or more each! And most of them have opted for destination weddings. The next
wedding season is from January and it would end in July take a whole leap of 7 months which
is a huge time. In the season between January – July Only Delhi have almost 4 lakh weddings
which would generate a business of around 70,000 Crore. Seeing such a bang wedding
planning business have come out to be growing with 5x multiple. It is growing with a rate of
200% this year. The biggest growth in any industry.
Cost structure and cost breakup for destination weddings in 2022 looked like :

%
Hotel (Food , stay , travel &
10% venue)

7% Décor

13% Entertainment
55% (choreographer, DJ , artists)
photo / videography &
15% make up artists
wedding planner

By this graph we can clearly see the most expenses have been made on venue and things
related to that. And then décor which includes floral and that is most trending. Not only Gold,
Electronics , clothing retailers are preparing themselves but cooking oil shops , pulses shop ,
sanitation shops & daily essential shopkeepers are preparing themselves with every item to
have a rush of customers seeing the wedding season ahead.

BUSINESS MODEL OF WEDDING PLANNER
Typically every wedding planner have almost same business model. Here is a business model
canvas of a wedding planner. A business model showcase how an organisation works , what the
target audience of the company is and most importantly what is company cost structure and
revenue stream.

Understanding a bit more about wedding planner business. So the client approaches the wedding
company with its wedding dates and other requirement. The company pitch the client with its best of
the ability. If the client is fully convinced the company sits with the client for a meeting. The budget ,
the commission and other budget related things are discussed. On planning the budget a client service
person is given to the customer who keep updated to the client and manages every department
involved in the wedding. The venue is selected on a priority basis , reccee visits are done and it is
booked. Then hospitality , vendor selection work is started and goes in process. All the vendors are
selected and booked one by one. The client pays for all the vendors. And the rest pending amount is
given to wedding planner after the wedding is successfully completed. And this is how a typical
wedding planner works. In easy words a planner manages and plans everything for you from scratch
to end without you being getting disturbed. Fee of wedding planner ranges between 5-10% of total
wedding cost. Few wedding planners have different packages and you can select any package out of
them to avail the services. The packages typically ranges from Bronze, platinum , Silver , gold or a
customised package according to your needs.
Some planners have in house team for every service , few outsource their team. Few planners have in
house décor and production but mostly of them outsource their décor. The wedding planner have their
moodboards ready with them to showcase the client and the client can then choose and customisation
can be done anything they like. Its necessary for the couple to be clear what exactly they are looking
for.
This is about company revenue stream now talking about the cost part the company has to borne their
employee as well as freelancers fees. The company is responsible for the freelancers charges and not
the client. Though the client takes care of the stay , food and travel of the freelancers. The office rent

Anushree Jain Wedding Planning 22

if any is a big expense for the company. Rest the company has to borne small expenses like stationery
charges, Phone charges, technology charges (website / application) , and collaboration charges.
Collaboration charges are the subscription fee paid to websites like wedmegood , just dial , etc.

GST ON WEDDING SERVICES

This season the wedding expenses would be on rise due to GST on wedding shopping & wedding
services that customer would avail. Check how much GST would be applicable on every service
related to wedding:
When buying clothing, there is a 5% GST on purchases under Rs. 1000 and a 12% GST on purchases
over Rs. 1000. As a result, purchasing a wedding dress should be a little less expensive than before.
You will pay more for your diamond and gold jewellery because the current 1.8% GST on gold items
has been increased to 3%. The tax on costume jewellery has been lowered to 12%, nevertheless.
Over Rs. 500 in value, shoes and related accessories are subject to an 18% tax.
Due to the 28% GST, bridal beauty kits and cosmetics will now cost extra.
Some necessary food items will now cost less money.
Soft drinks will be more expensive, which could also raise the cost of your wedding. Some alcoholic
beverages, particularly beer, will now cost more as a result of rising manufacturing input prices.
If you intend to reserve a 5-star hotel for your wedding, be aware that GST will increase the price by
28%. The tax rate for low-cost hotels has, however, been reduced.
There will be an additional 18% GST charge if you decide to use an event management service.
The same as the majority of other wedding services, the GST on renting a wedding lawn and/or hall is
18%.
Due to the 28% GST that will be applied to high-end bridal makeup, the price of makeup and salon
services is also likely to increase. Due to the increase in GST, even standard makeup artists may
demand higher income.
Another significant cost that could have an impact on your wedding plans is GST on tent services.
The buyer would pay an 18% GST set by the government for tent (pandal/shamiana) services.
GST on candy products and catering services may push up the price even more. The catering services
will be subject to an 18% GST charge. Employing a confectioner and other similar services will
become more expensive. However, you can haggle with your caterer to take this into account since
there is no GST on many staple foods like milk, wheat, etc.
Additionally, the GST rate for photography services has raised to 18%, which is likely to have an
impact on your finances as well.
Costs for the wedding invitation and courier have increased. When using courier services, a GST of
18% will be applied.
Traveling (honeymoon, etc.) will be more affordable because under the GST, the tax on flight for
economy class is only 5%.

TAXATION IN WEDDING
Wedding is an occasion of happiness , bonding and closeness where the closed ones gift you. The
gifts received in weddings are non taxable. So if your mother sends you Rs 5,00,000 in your bank
account it would be non taxable. But , in case someone not related to you gifts you anything above Rs
50,000 then that would be taxable. To understand in more simpler term, if anyone related to you gifts
you anything be it cash , jewellery , refrigerator, Television , etc or even land property that would be
tax free under section 56 of the Income Tax Act, 1961 but in case a person not related to you gifts you
anything above Rs 50,000 then it would not tax free & the person receiving the gift would have to pay
for the same.
For instance your father gifted you cash as present you need to deposit the amount in the bank around
your wedding date itself and the gifts such as car , property should be dated around wedding dates. It
is advised to keep a note of the wedding gifts for legal documentation. And according to law if in the
future you decide to sell or rent that same gifted property that would be taxable.

NEW BILL TO CHARGE TAX ON WEDDINGS

Lok Sabha have taken out a new bill in which the family who spends excess of Rs 5 lakh on weddings
shall be liable to contribute 10% amount on weddings of poor girls also. It was launched in 2016 by
Member of Parliament of Congress.

LICENSES REQUIRED FOR WEDDINGS

Booking venue or DJ for your wedding is not enough. You need to take permissions and license to
organise the wedding , have baraat in the lawns , play copyrighted music in the premises and many
more. The following licenses are required for the wedding:

1. PPL License: This license is required to play pre recorded or copyrighted music in the
premises. Without this license the venue wont let you play the music as the venue would have
to pay the fine later on. So it’s an important license if you have invited a DJ to play music.
2. IPRS License: This license is for any live performance.
3. Common license for any event:
• NOC from Traffic department
• NOC from Health department
• NOC from Fire Brigade department
• NOC from electrical inspector
• NOC from additional collectors office
• NOC from local police station
• Rangbhoomi License (Only for Maharshtra)
4. Loud speaker license: Such a permit is required to be taken for private/ public functions
held in private/public places. It can be obtained from your local police station.
5. Liquor license: In case of alcohol present.
6. Novex license: This license is used to play music by Yash raj Filme and Zee Entertainment.
7. RMPL: You need this license in case you are playing music in public environment.
8. Foreign Artist permission license: You would need this license if you have invited any
international artist to perform at your wedding. You will have to submit their necessary
documents too.
To obtain the license you will have to submit NOC from venue, Floor plan of the premises, letter of
application on event planner letterhead with affidavit and stamp to different license department. For
more accurate licenses ask your venue what all license they prefer.

WEDDING SEASONS (PEAK SEASONS)
Seeing the trend of wedding this year the common wedding season in India is between October to
December and January to May. One of the reason maybe winter season is cool without any sweat.
Different wedding seasons have different wedding trends.
For few years October has been the peak wedding season. Its maybe because of the weather, at that
time of the year the weather is neither cold nor hot there is little breeze , a cosy vibe , changing leaves
just a perfect vibe for love & togetherness. Hence, October is the most busiest for a wedding planner.
Spring season: It is also a good time to get married. The perfect time to get married especially if you
want to play a wedding in outskirts of the venue.

HOW DO WEDDING PLANNERS HANDLE PEAK SEASON?

Peak season is the most busiest time for wedding planners. They have no time to stay at their place
they are just travelling from once location to another. Still, they manage it without any flaw. Probably
because they are the heroes of time management. They have a proper schedule of when to do what
work, their work is properly delegated between all their employees to ensure teamwork and there is no
burden on any person. They try to go virtual between that time whenever possible. Prioritizing their
goals even if it means keeping aside their personal goals and matters. Being available 24*7 that is
working aside normal business hours. They forget eating and sleeping too meaning working late and
sleepless nights too. During peak season a wedding planner would always be available at your
doorstep.

HOW DO WEDDING PLANNERS HANDLE OFF SEASON?

After knowing what planners do in peak season lets know what they have in their pocket for off
season. So off season is usually in the month of February , March and April keeping aside this season.
Off season is usually considered to be dull season for wedding planners as there is no work to do. But
to keep their office stuff going they do the following activities:
1. Networking with vendors and venue partners
2. Reccee visits
3. Plan a holiday with employee & family
4. Making of moodboards for upcoming wedding season
5. Plan wedding which is in line
6. Research their market
7. Sometimes they get client in the off season too (Lucky wedding planners get that too)
8. Planning for the peak season in advance
9. Training employees
So, a wedding planner is also never off duty. They are always busy working on creating your
dreams come true. They are pro active 12 months. Off season is the best time to work on your
business goals , strategies and your employees before you kick start wedding season. And a
typical wedding takes almost 5-6 months to be planned hence there is no time for a planner to take
rest.

STATE WISE WEDDING PLANNING
Every state has different traditions, attire , rituals in their weddings. And every state has their own
unique beauty of wedding. Previously we saw different rituals in every different region. In this let’s
see how different state have different wedding style and what attire do they usually wear.
1. Kashmir: They start their rituals with tika ceremony in most of the cases with Himachal
Culture & the beautiful scenario of mountains. The biggest tradition in Himachal wedding is
to buy nath for the wedding which they call as Dogra Nath. With wedding approaching
nearby they have a ritual called as Mama swagat , then haldi ceremony , then sangeet , then
followed by wedding. On wedding day baraat welcome is called as Saptapadi and at the end
Vidaai.

2. Uttar Pradesh: Horoscope matching is the first step in a U.P. wedding process, and after the
two families have finalised everything, the first ritual of Rokka' is performed. The bride and
groom's devotion to one another is symbolised by this ceremony. The Rokka is followed by a
number of ceremonies, including mangni, sangeet, mehandi, and lastly the wedding rituals on
the wedding day. It should be mentioned that these weddings typically take place in the
winter. Every rite at the wedding has a purpose. The pleasure never stops during a U.P.
wedding, which is jam-packed with traditions that last for hours.

to attend a royal Rajasthani wedding. Any observer will find the traditional dance, music,
stunning bridal dress, jewellery, and wedding customs captivating. The wedding dress'
grandeur shows an elite appeal. Pre-wedding, wedding-day, and post-wedding practises that

4. Maharashtra: The first pre-wedding rite is the engagement, or Sakhar Puda as it is known in
Marathi, which starts days before the wedding. Beginning with a puja for Lord Ganesh, the
wedding day rituals are performed in order to ensure that everything goes according to plan
and with the god's blessings. People still adhere to the customs and rituals that have been part
of Marathi weddings for a very long time.

5. GUJARAT: In a Gujarati wedding, the Panetar and Gharchola saris are of utmost importance.
The bride wears a Panetar sari, which was given to her by her maternal uncle, on the day of
her wedding. The bride's in-laws, on the other side, present her with the Gharchola. At the
conclusion of the wedding ceremony, customarily, the bride dons the Gharchola to represent
her entry into a new home. Today, it's typical to see brides wear Gharchola chunnis as part of
their wedding attire.

6. PUNJAB & DELHI : When it comes to the celebration of weddings and marriage rituals,
Punjab & Delhi is best characterised culturally. This state has long been well-liked for its
vibrant customs and culture, which unite and promote fraternity among its citizens. The state's
"life" is enhanced by the extensive practise of its food, ceremonies, attire, dance, and other
forms of entertainment. The three types of Punjabi wedding customs are the pre-wedding
festivities, which include Takha, Rokha, Mangni, Sagai, Sangeet, and Mehendi, and the main
wedding. Pheres and kanyadaan are a couple of the additional components of a Punjabi
wedding. A typical Punjabi wedding concludes with a lavish banquet and a sad vidaai, where
the bride is sent off to her new house, but the pleasure doesn't end there.
