Reds, Blackwell in Fine Form, Beat Pittsburgh in Season Opener

CINCINNATI The Reds picked up where they left off last summer and Ewell Blackwell continued to bedevil the Pittsburgh Pirates as Cincinnati won its, and baseballs, opening game on Monday, 7-4. Blackwell (1-0) tossed a complete-game 7hitter for his 12th career win over the Bucs against only five losses. The scheduled American League opener pitting the New York Yankees and Washington Senators was rained out. Rain wasnt a problem at Crosley Field, where a near-sellout crowd of 29,897 enjoyed unseasonably balmy skies. If the weather was pleasantly unexpected, the play of the home team was not.
The Reds stumbled out of the gate in 1950, and on June 24 boasted baseballs worst record

Pirates Pitcher in Critical Condition With Brain Inflammation

Pirates Pitcher Bill Pierro fought for his life against a serious brain ailment at Presbyterian Hospital, less than a week after he became ill with a supposed stomach disorder. Pierro, who turned 25 on Sunday, first became ill in Knoxville, Tenn., last Tuesday. He was en route to Pittsburgh. Pirates team physician Dr. Norman Ochsenhirt said the young righthander was suffering from either encephalitis or meningitis.
