Nightbooks
Nightbooks is a 2021 American dark fantasy film. It is based on the 2018
horror-fantasy children's book of the same name written by J. A. White. The
film stars Winslow Fegley, Lidya Jewett, and Krysten Ritter.
Alex Mosher (Winslow Fegley) is from Brooklyn, New York. He is a
creative boy who loves writing scary stories. People around him think he is
strange, and his parents are worried about his mental health. Because of that
he swears he will never write a story again. He also decides to destroy his
collection of self-written scary stories named "Nightbooks".
He leaves his apartment while his parents are talking and takes the elevator to the building’s
furnace to burn the books. That's when an evil witch named Natacha (Krysten Ritter) captures him
in her magical apartment in New York. She wants Alex to write a scary story every night and then
read it to her, or she will kill him. She has an enormous library, but she has heard every scary
story in it, which is why she wants Alex to write new ones.
In the apartment, there is another young prisoner, Yasmin (Lidya Jewett), who has learned how
to survive the witch's moods. And there is Lenore, the witch’s magical cat, which is always spying
on them. Alex learns from Yasmin that the apartment moves around the world, and its only exits
are the front and back door, which respond only to Natacha's magical keys.
With Yasmin's help, Alex learns that he must value what makes him unique - his love for scary
stories - and rewrite his own destiny to break them free.
