PROCEDURES

1. SCOPE:

This procedure defines the method of preservation of Welding electrodes.

2. REFERENCE DOCUMENTS:

ASME Sec. IX, Latest Edition and Addenda


Customer Specifications, as applicable

3. EQUIPMENTS/ FACILITIES:

Hot room
Electrically heated ovens. (Baking and Holding)
Electrically heated portable heaters

4. PROCEDURE:

Hot room shall be humidity free and maintained at a temperature above 40 deg. C.
Temperature indicators shall be placed in the hot room at 2 locations.

All electrodes, on acceptance by the Welding Engineer, shall be transferred to the hot
room without removing the wrapper.

Electrodes shall be stored in separate racks based on the grade and quality. Traceability
display shall be provided to easily identify the electrodes.

When requested by the production, stores issue the electrodes to the workmen.

Stores shall load the electrodes in the baking oven and raise the temperature. Holding
temperature and holding period shall be as per manufacturer’s recommendation. Store
keeper shall maintain the record indicating the loading, heating, soaking and unloading
time and temperature.

PROCEDURES

After maintaining the baking as stated above, the electrodes shall be transferred to a
holding oven which will have the temperature maintained above 100 deg. C.

Store keeper shall issue the electrodes to the production as per the request raised by the
shop supervisor.

He shall issue only 15 electrodes at a time. The electrodes shall be collected by the
welder/helper in the portable heaters which is preheated.

The welder shall ensure that the electrodes used for the welding are always in hot
condition. In case the welder is having unused electrodes at the end of the shift or on
completion of the welding assignment, he shall return the electrodes to the store keeper
in hot condition, which may be kept back in the holding oven.

In case the electrodes have turned cold due to any reason, such electrode shall not be
used for production.

In case the unused electrodes from the holding oven are to be kept back in the hot room,
The store keeper shall do so with proper identification. Such electrodes shall be reheated
as per the above procedure.
