Sexual Health Committee


Meeting Notes July 14, 2011 Present: Rachel Douglas, TASC; Candice Zipfel, MCHD; Andrea Stafford, MadCAP; Julie Mayfield, Rel8 and Donna Oehler, SIHF. AGENDA I. Announcements Information about Andrea Strafford, MadCAP, explained that MadCAP has a desire to include STI testing into their services. This service is not currently provided by MadCAP but there is discussion about the benefits of adding Gonorrhea, Chlamydia and Hepatitis C testing to their list of available services. MadCAP: The June 27th testing event was cancelled and rescheduled for July 18. MadCAP will be providing free HIV testing on July 18th from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Brooklyn Fire Department in Brooklyn, IL. The event will provide free HIV testing, food, games, music, and hair cuts for children. Julie Mayfield, Rel8, shared some good news. Mosaic Pregnancy and Health Center has a new Nurse Manager. Congratulations! Candice Zipfel, MCHD, explained that the committee will have a website with access to Facebook and Twitter. The committee discussed the many barriers for using the social media site to reach youth. In order to reach youth with sexual health information, the committee will have to use focus groups and focus testing to create the most effective tone. III. Business Whats Next o Committee Impact Objective: By December 31, 2012 increase by 5% the number of sexually active teens under 20 years of age who receive testing and/or treatment for STDs and HIV/AIDS. o 2011 Committee Interventions: By March 2011, MCPCH will establish a 5-year committee plan to address teen pregnancy and STDS and HIV/AIDS.

By August 2011, MCPCH will implement a social media campaign to raise awareness of teen pregnancy in Madison County and the benefits of improved education. By December 2011, MCPCH will conduct a youth input meeting.

o Committee members discussed strategies for the above listed impact objective. The largest hurdle for this objective is the lack of resources. Candice suggested that the committee target a specific clinic and provide door to door outreach in the surrounding area. o Julie, Rel8, expressed interest in reaching out to youth in Granite City. Deb Knoll, MCHD, shared with Candice that shes on board with the committees desire to reach out to youth in the Wood River/East Alton communities. Candice and Julie discussed finding a time in the fall to conduct door to door. IV.
