Sir Renato Valdez History 10: The Life and Works of Rizal

Activity 13: Exploring the Text and the Film

1. Get a copy and the film Bayaning Third World. It is hope that the topic (Retraction of Rizal)
will be more vivid and clear.

2. Compare and contrast the debate on Rizal’s Retraction letter and the film.

▪ It is difficult to compare and contrast the two ideas, but with the help of the film and letter, I
clearly understood what they wanted us to know. Retraction is synonymous with retreat.
The signed documents were falsified, and some crucial sentences were substituted and
modified, according to Rizal's Retraction. As a result, his own relatives denied that he was
the author of the retraction letter. His life was discussed in the film, but not in depth. It was
also debatable in the film whether he retracted or not. Rizal is said to have retracted and
accepted Catholicism on the basis of a paper signed by him and delivered by Fr. Balaguer
SJ. Both were perplexing, but they added to our understanding of what happened at the
time.

3. Identify what values or lessons that are evident in the text or film.

▪ The film and letter clearly have the ability to teach us a variety of ideals and lessons. They
include bravery, patriotism, and standing up for what is right. We learned how to fight for
our Filipino rights from Rizal. Despite having lost many of his loved ones, he exhibited no
selfish desire.

4. Write your own observation about Rizal’s retraction controversy.

▪ My observation regarding the Rizal retraction controversy is that both sides have their own
point of view. If Rizal were to rise from the dead, all of the arguments would be settled. It's
as perplexing as determining what happened back there because two opposing thoughts
converge. One has demonstrated that Rizal retracted his proposal to marry Josephine and
repented of everything he had done. Meanwhile, another claimed that he did not retract and
that the evidence discovered was accurate.
5. Make a persuasive essay about the controversy of Rizal’s retraction letter. Did he retract or
not? Would Rizal’s works be deemed irrelevant and futile because of his retraction?

For nearly a century, Dr. Jose Rizal has been considered a national hero. He was the embodiment of

nationalistic loyalty and a symbol of our country's freedom. He exudes martyrdom with each fiber of

his being, as well as everything else that he fled the country for. Infinite books and articles have been

written concerning his life. Rizal's honorable attribute was that he became an Associate in Nursing

through extension education, whereas he was the main course in a very prestigious college. His

wholeness as someone, primarily as a Filipino, has been researched thoroughly by each researcher

and student.

In the case of Rizal's claimed retraction incident, the evidence suggests that Rizal didn't make such a

declaration of withdrawal and confession. The other, that accuses Rizal of truly expressing an

announcement of retraction, stands for the contradictory.

There are case studies that show Rizal didn't really withdraw. His burial is an Associate in Nursing

example of this. He wasn't buried in a very Catholic burial site and was labelled as a suicide (criminal)

case, moreover, as a neglected body among mounds of corpses with undetermined causes of death.

If he did forswear and reprimand Masonry, the Church would have had the decency to supply him

with a correct Catholic burial and declare his death below the list of Catholics, so as to acknowledge

the confession the friars aforementioned, they determined Rizal built. Rizal's claimed retraction

papers were additionally solely discovered thirty (30) years after his death.

When 2 statements of the declaration were recognized, each of which had various variations, a

source of concern was raised. Some say one in every of these was made up, whereas others say the

real copy withered away in the hands of the Spanish Catholic friars. They determined a replica was

created by somebody who might imitate Rizal's handwriting, whereas the initial was preserved by a

gaggle of friars.
There are also many that believe Rizal had no cause to retract, claiming that he was a lord who

wouldn't descend so low on following those he was writing against in the first place. notwithstanding, I

used to be a lot more stunned by his bravery and loyalty. He died as a hero and remains honored by

men. His leadership was so outstanding that he risked his life for our independence. That would've

been the last alternative if he had gone backward. Nonetheless, it had not been enough.
