Harmer also adds the criteria of a good textbook as follow:

1. How expensive is the textbook? Can the students afford it? Will they have to buy an
accompanying work book? Can they afford both? What about the teacher can he or she
pay for the teachers book and tapes.
The textbook is not too expensive, the price is about 50.000 rupiahs for the new version.
The students can afford the textbook. Students don’t need to buy another book in using
this textbook, because this book is complete and balance between the materials and
exercises. We can see from the book that each material, there is also some activities such
as question, fill the blank, etc. And the teacher also can afford the textbook, because this
textbook doesn’t use tapes, instead using QR code.

2. If the course available? Are all components (students’ book, teachers’ book, workbook
etc.) in the shops now? What about the next level (for the next term/semester)? Has it
been published) is it available? What about tapes, videos and etc?
The course is available in this textbook, but students Based on the Merdeka curriculum,
students are expected to be more active, not only relying on the material provided in the
book as well as this textbook. All of the components are included in this textbook, so
they’re all in one in this textbook. This textbook is including 2 semester, and the
components such as audio, video, etc can be accessed by scanning the QR code.

3. Is the book attractive? Does the teacher feel comfortable with it? Do the student like it?
How user friendly is the design? Does it yet in the way of what the book is trying to do or
does it enhance it?
The textbook is a little bit attractive. It contains many pictures, which can attract students.
But, the picture in the textbook is  lack of colour, it is just black and white. The texts in the
textbook are mostly highlighted in green, so students will be more interested in them. The
teacher will comfortable with the book because the is easy to use, providing the material
and also the activities. The students like it because they don’t have to buy any other book.
The design is very impressive with the simple and modern style.The textbook is in the way
of what the book is trying to do, there are some interesting features that will make the
students be more interested such as critical thinking, things to remember, summary, etc.
4. What kind of teaching and learning does the book promote? Can teachers and students
build appropriate ESA sequences from it? Is there a good balance between study and
activation?
The textbook emphasizes the students to be more active by providing many activities and
tasks. Obviously the teachers and students can build appropriate ESA. There isn’t a good
balance between study and activation. The textbook is more provide students’ activities
than the matterials.

5. Does the book cover the four skills reading, writing, speaking, listening adequately? Is
there a decent balance between the skill? Are there opportunities for both study and
activation in the skill work? Is the language of the reading and listening text appropriate?
Are the speaking and writing tasks likely to engage the students interest?
Yes, the textbook covers the four skills including reading, speaking, listening, and writing.
Based on our analysis in one of the chapter of the book, the result is not balance enough. It
more provide reading skills, listening skills, and speaking skills, but it’s lack of writing
skills. There are opportunities for both study and activation in the skill work, because the
purpose of the textbook is give the lesson to the students by giving those skill work. The
language of the reading and listening text appropriate.

6. Is the syllabus of the book appropriate for your students? Does is cover the language
points you would expect? Are they in the right order? Do the reading and listening texts
increase difficulty as the book progresses?

7. Does the book contain a variety of topics? Are they likely to engaged the students’
interest? Does the teacher respond to them well? Are they culturally appropriate for the
students? Are they too adult or too childish?

9. Is there a good teachers’ guide? Is it easy to use? Does it have all the answers the teacher
might need? Does it offer alternatives to lesson procedures? Does it contain a statement of
intention which the teacher and students feel happy with?
