CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Analysis book is one of the forms to determine the quality of a book, in the sense that
the book used for students and teachers have appropriate material or not. As we know that the
book is a guide for teachers in implementing the learning that includes the preparation,
execution, and assessment as well as guidelines for the use of the student book.

Student book is a source of learning for students, which includes: title of the chapter,
the basic competencies of information in accordance with the chapter topic. In each chapter
comes with a concept map, introduction, part of student activities both experimental and non-
experimental or discussions, exercises, summaries, evaluations, and assignments for students.
The book should also be in accordance with less basic competency, adequacy and depth of
the material, as well as the suitability of the learning and assessment approaches.

Analysis the Cover

The cover gives the description that the book is for


the eleventh grade students of senior high school. The
picture describes by Indonesian children who use
traditional clothes and foreigner children who use
modern clothes also describe with buildings, ocean
and sky between them. Its illustrate that English
should be given to children as young as possible
because in this modern era english is an important
aspect in daily life, with english we can built
communication with the foreigner, and by
communication we can know the other countries.
This book combined with some colour to atrract the
students.
The dominant colour are orange, blue, white, and yellow. Orange means anthusiastic, perhaps
the students will be anthusiatic to read or learn with this book. Blue means built
communication. It illustrated that this book can built communication among he students, or it
means that the students is an active learners. White means self accomplishment, it illustrate
that by this book perhaps the students can get their accomplishment easier. And yellow

means cooperation. It almost is same with blue colour, that the students can help each other if
they find difficulties in understanding about material in this book. So that their can be an
active learners. Overall all the colour is combined to make the students interested with this
book.

Chapter II

Discussion

Analysis According to Harmer

From the results we have done analysts are starting to read the book, understand the
material, and determine what will be in the value and analyzed as well as describe it.
Based on existing 10 Criteria for Assessment of Textbooks:

a. Textbooks must attract children.


Analysis :
In this book every chapters provide interest topic.
In the first chapter the topic is “Amazing Creatures”, from the topic I think that the
students will fell more curious and want to know about the content. The content is
match with the topic there are many pictures which related to the topic ‘creature’ from
people, animals, etc. This chapter will make the students fun and enjoy in learning
English. For speaking skill the students will learn about expression of opinion,
satisfaction/dissatisfaction, its really suitable with the topic amazing creator, for
example is the student satisfied or not with something? Is something amazing/not?

In the second chapter the topic is “You’d Better Do It


Right Now”. From the word of the topic the students is
motivated to do something as soon as possible. For
speaking skill the studets will learn about expression
advice, suggestion and permission. Its really match

with the topic for example one of students suggest her
friend to do the task right now, because if you delay to
do your task its mean that you are delay you better
future.
In the third chapter the topic is “Ouch! It Hurts!” In this topic the students will learn the
expression of pain, relief, pleasure and displeasure. The students will try to express
their face based on the expression which available. It will make the students interested.
This book can attract the students beside the topic very interested, there are alot of
picture inside and the picture very suitable with the condition so the students will easier
to understand about the material.

b. Textbooks are to be able to motivate students.


Analysis :
We can see in this book in first chapter, there is a topic about opinion. It will motivate
students to show their opinion about something, and it will increase their speaking
ability. From the topic in chapter 2 “You’d Better Do It Right Now. Its will motivate
students to do something as soon as possible.

c. Textbooks must contain illustrations that captivate the students.


Analysis:
This book has good illustration. All of the material has illustration and the illustration
will guide thought of students to guess what the material is. Then, when they look the
illustration, they will easier to understand the lesson.

d. Textbooks should consider linguistic aspects
Analysis :
This book use a simple word, so the students will not fell confuse in read it. For the
senior high school it is very effective to use as guide the teacher to teach. All the
chapter in this book use the simple statement. It is a good text book.

e. Textbooks should be closely linked to other lessons.


Analysis :
The contents of this book relate to other lesson. Like in the chapter 1 the topic amazing
creature include flora and fauna is related to the biology. Borobudur temple in report
text related to History.

f. Textbooks can stimulate or excite students' personal activities.


Analysis :
In every chapter of this book, speaking skill especially is stimulate students to be an
active learners. The expression of giving opinion, pleasure, displeasure, suggestion,
pain, satisfaction/dissatisfaction, relief and permission. All of the exprssion is stimulate

the students to show their speaking, so that they will not just keep silent, it will make
them more active. By speaking although just little, but it will increase their speaking
ability.

g. Textbooks must be aware of and expressly avoiding concepts vague.


Analysis :
In this book I think so clear. As in the pages 4 explain about giving opinion where
usually use words i think, i believe, in my opinion.. etc, and then disagreement use i
don’t think so, agreement I think so. And then in page 25 is tell how to asking, giving,
and rejecting permission. And then in page 39-40 is learn about the expression pain
and relief also pleasure and displeasure clearly.

h. Textbooks must have a clear view of the angle Point of view is quite clear and
unequivocal book for senior high school students. 
Analysis:
After give a material this book will follow with task and ask the students to practice
about the material. So the student will be more understand with the material.

i. Textbooks must be able to provide stabilization, emphasis on the values of


children and adults.
Analysis :
We can read in some topic in this book about opinion, suggestion, and pleasure. It
means as a human life we do not be arrogant because everyone of course need the other
one, and we must be happy in every condition because sadness will not make you come
up .

j. Textbooks should be able to appreciate the personal differences of the


students and the wearer.
Analysis:
This book not distinguish the wearer. This book is suitable for the eleventh grade of
Senior High School. There is no discussing about the differences of them. It is for

general student not to special learners. This book use communicative language so its
make the students easier to understand. Both students or the teacher can use this book
for the guide book.

CHAPTER III

CONCLUSION

 After read and analyse this book I make decision that this book is good enough and can
to use as the teacher guide in teaching english subject in eleventh grade. From the
cover, syllabus, material every chapter, task, games e.tc very interest and construct.
This book is illustration and design very good. As the English teacher we have to use a
good sourches in order we present a good knowledge to the learners.

 And based on analyse the text that showing in every chapter that this book is suitable
for the eleventh grade students of senior high school.
 Based on 10 Criteria from Greene and Petty all the criteria are there in this book.
