 It is the use of accumulated knowledge in both

engineering and economics to identify alternative
uses of limited or scarce resources and to select
the best course of action (from an economical
point of view)

◦ Focus on economic variables such as price, expenditure, salaries
◦ It is generally assumed that the objective of a firm is to maximize
the profit and the objective of a household is to maximize
satisfaction
‫◦ تفترض ان هدف اي شركة هو تعظيم الربح وان هدف اي شخص هو تعظيم الرضا‬

 Engineering economics is closely tied to micro economics -

mainly directed at operational level

 Simple Problems:
◦ Can generally be worked in your head without extensive
analysis

 Intermediate Problems:
◦ Important enough to justify thought and action
◦ They can't be worked in your head - must be organized
◦ Principal subject of this course

 Complex Problems:
◦ Such problems represent a mixture of economic, political and
humanistic elements
