Post Rehearsal or Lesson Reflections

Content Adjustment:
Well, this lesson plan was not useful at all in the classroom. Due to the fact that we did not have our teacher in
the classroom (John Dupuis) we decided to have sectionals with our own primary instruments to teach to our
best ability. Another issue that occurred is that this class usually splits into two jazz band but without Mr. Powell
there to teach, we had to keep both bands together which created an issue of not everyone playing the same
music. So, I told everyone who had it to take out String of Pearls, which is what I wrote my lesson plan on, and
everyone else look off of your neighbors’ part. Once that was settled I began rehearsing using what I wrote in
my lesson plan, except my lesson plan was a little too difficult because the students were not even playing the
right pitches. This is something I will adjust for next week.
Rehearsal or Lesson Adjustment:
Once I began teaching I had them play a section of the music and worked on rhythm. They were struggling with
it but eventually could play the rhythm. So, after rhythm I began working on style, but they were not able to
grasp this yet because they were so focused on playing the right rhythm. The Mr. Dupuis came over and began
helping me by having the trombones play the line and played each note on the piano because they were not
even hitting the right pitches. He went and sat back down but I used his technique and made the sections play
individually so I could directly help what needed fixing. To adjust next week, I am going to start with just the
basics of pitch and rhythm because they are still at the early stages of learning this piece of music.
Reflection on Teaching:
Well, I think it went very well for the circumstance we were under. The kids were more quiet than usual and a
little nervous to be working with new people without their teacher there. They were focused which was good
and made classroom management easy. John Dupuis gave all three of us very helpful feedback at the end of
class, he said we did a good job and handled the situation well. He also said that this music was too difficult for
the students so we should really focus on the fundamentals next week. As of my own thoughts, I think my
confidence has gone up after this experience and I know that I have the ability to handle unexpected scenarios
and be flexible. Going in and teaching a different section with 2 bands combined teaching music only half of
them knew was difficult, but overall I think I handled it very well.
