Theory thought 1

Hegemony is defined by William as "complex way a ruling class expresses dominance over the lower
classes through large societal ideas and practices that have become engrained in the public to the point
of normalcy.” An world where static domination exist .Expanded by Marxism for social classes.
Both articles bring up interesting points regarding hegemony, and also ideas on cultural studies.
Achieving great volume of information within these two articles, and the complex ideas on
culture. The main argument for Brunt is that she wants to use cultural studies in a way to
observe and question audiences of media in regards to finding more information about culture,

I think there were far more similarities than there were differences, both touched on cultural
studies and hegemony. Both touch on ideas of large mass influencing the small mass, and how
that affects culture as a whole. Comparing social media outlets and using them to influence small
groups and test culture. Brunt’s article may focus slightly more on cultural studies compared to
William’s though, and William’s is more focused on hegemony, that is one main difference.

I really find interesting the difference in definition between the two of art and media. Personality
had a lot to do with this, but the influence of culture can not be understated and the influence
from classes in culture. Also comparing to the definition of “media” being that of national
concern, and involving politics. It seemed the audience was distrustful at times, but yet still
wanted it, and the media providing the what people want. I definitely struggled a little bit with
these readings, but I love a good challenge, I believe I got a somewhat decent understanding by
the end. I also like the “audience” an how it is not a one collective, but individuals, made of
different and separate ideologies.
