WEEK 5: STRUCTURAL ISOMERISM

Activity 1

2. A
3. A
4. B
5. A
Activity 2
The following chemical formulas are all isomers, they are of the same chemical formula but has
difference in structural formula
1. C5H10
2. C5H8
3.C5H11OH
4. C5H12
5. C6H14
A. C5H12
B. C5H10
C. C5H8
D .C6H14
E. C5H11OH

ACTIVITY 3
Structural isomers are molecules that have the same (1) CHEMICAL FORMULAS but
different (2) STRUCTURES Each isomer contains the same (3) TYPE and (4) NUMBER of atoms but
are
(5) ARRANGED in a different order. A molecule that contains (6) DOUBLE BONDS will have isomers
that also have double bonds. If it contains other elements like oxygen and nitrogen, its isomers will have
those as well. A simple example is glucose and fructose shown below. Both have the same
(7) CHEMICAL FORMULA but each has its own (8) STRUCTURE The chemical formula of both
substances is (9) C6H12O6 Glucose and fructose are two different substances but are also isomers of
each other. In addition, the (10) STRUCTURAL FORMULA of a molecule shows how the atoms are
distributed to each C atom without showing all the bonds. It is a shorter way of illustrating the
arrangement of the atoms in a molecule.

IV. REFLECTION
Paraphrasing is unacknowledged copying or making another version of an original, whether of ideas,
text or results. In relation to that, isomerism is the phenomenon in which more than one compounds
have the same chemical formula but different chemical structures. It similar in paraphrasing in the
context of text property where the component atoms are arranged in a different way.

REFLECTION

In organic synthesize, people are amazed with the result, thinking that we could go wonders with the
capability of new technology. In the situation of GMOs, it probably triggers disgust because people
view genetic modification as a contamination. The effect is enforced when the introduced DNA comes
from a species that is generally deemed disgusting, such as rats or cockroaches. However, DNA is DNA,
whatever its source. The impact of disgust explains why people feel more averse towards GM food than
other GM applications, such as GM medicine.
