EXPRESING DIFFERENCE USING “WHEREAS AND HOWEVER”

WHEREAS: EXAMPLES AND HOW TO USE

The conjunction whereas has a number of meanings, but it’s most commonly used

to mean although or while in contrast. In these senses of whereas, the word is
grammatically identical to while or although. That is, it introduces a dependent
clause. Whereas often introduces a thought that contrasts with something in the
main clause. For example:

Some couples now both have to work, whereas only one person did before.
[Washington Post]

EXAMPLE A: Idea 1, “whereas” + idea 2

She is making a phone call, whereas he is working on the computer.

EXAMPLE B: “whereas” + Idea 1, idea 2

Whereas she is making a phone call, he is working on the computer.

Either way is correct we are comparing and

contrasting in both examples

EXERCISE:

Whereas links two ideas that contrast with each other. It is used to highlight an
important difference between two similar things or facts.

1. Whereas I am Vegetarian, my whole family eats meat.

2. All of my sisters are doctor, whereas I am.

3. My Husband is allergic to dogs, whereas I am a dog lover.

HOWEVER: EXAMPLES AND HOW TO USE

Grammatically ‘‘However’’ is adverb, to be more precise, even a connector. But

also, it is used as a conjunction, specifically a connector, Part of speech depends
on meaning of this Word but to emphasize is CONJUCTIVE ADVERB.

After write HOWEVER we’re use a comma, to continue the sentence.

The meaning in Spanish is: ‘’sin embargo’’.

The pronunciation is: /haʊ’evə(r)/.

EXAMPLE:

 She is the best student in School. However, she doesn’t do the homework
on time.

The most common way of using ‘however’ is to mean ‘but’. This usually comes at
the beginning of a sentence, and is followed by a comma.

 The calendar claimed the month was May. However, the temperature felt
more like November.

WHEREAS AND HOWEVER DIFFERENCES

'However,' is usually used at the start of the sentence to compare an idea with the
one in the previous sentence.

'Whereas' is used in the middle to show contrast between 2 ideas.

Also, "However" can be used to talk about the same subject (thing/person/places
etc) but "Whereas" is usually used to compare 2 different subjects.

You can say: Sam is good is in his studies. However, he is bad at sports. (✓)

But this is wrong: Sam is good in his studies whereas he is bad at sports (X)
