Read “Inflexibility as a Vulnerability to Depression: A Systematic Qualitative Review” by

Strange et al posted-on Blackboard. Respond to the following questions: 

• Does the author have a clear thesis? What is the thesis? The author has a clear thesis that talks

about how depression can target certain people due to their vulnerabilities. This has been

discussed to be different things or factors in distinct articles concerning this topic. The author

suggests that different from how most of the research focuses on particular thoughts, strategies,

or behavior, new research suggests that flexible change to new thoughts and behaviors depending

on the demands of the situation may reveal how vulnerable people may be to depression.

• Does the author describe or summarize the sources sufficiently for you to understand them?  The

author describes and summarizes the sources by talking about their evidence and how it

contributes to inflexibility to changing circumstances being a vulnerability to depression. Since

not being able to adapt to changes in emotion and behavior, according to the author and the

evidence discovered, it can be appropriately concluded that this is a major contributing factor to

depression. The information provided by the sources and their summaries by the author is

sufficient to understand how they contribute to this statement.

• What is the author’s evidence for his/her review of the literature? How has the author organized

the information? The author describes underlying theories and measurements of five overall

aspects of inflexibility as vulnerability to depression as evidence of the literature. By doing this,

he can organize the information using these key aspects as important highlighters found

throughout the articles as they all talk about factors contributing to depression being that

flexibility or the absence of flexibility can cause depression to become more or less serious. The

author also organizes key article details to emphasize how the theories were tested and the data

that supports such key findings.

What can you take from this article to use in your writing? I can take from this article the

usefulness and benefits of organizing my annotated bibliography and essay for the upcoming

assignments to present the information presented around a topic from the point of view of

different articles. In this way, it can be made clearer how the data interacts and informs readers

about scholarly reviews on any chosen topic. Identifying key aspects of a topic is of special

importance in organizing any essay as this article did.
