Technical Writing

ACTIVITY

1. Write a short technical description of an everyday object with a detailed breakdown of the key
components

 Provide your audience with a detailed overview of the physical components and functions of a
mechanical device, such as a tool or machine. You often write this document for sales or
manufacturing individuals with design specifications or infographics.

2. Write a short technical description of an everyday object with a detailed breakdown of the key
components

 Process Description
A process description describes how a process works or an event is produced. These
descriptions are written for people who want to learn the underlying mechanism of how
something works. From photosynthesis to carbon emissions, process descriptions can be written
for anything that needs explanation.

3. Secure an example of instruction manual

Think About What You Want to Include

 In order to create an effective user manual, you need to have a good idea of what type of
content you want to include in it.
 Compile all the information, knowledge, process, checklists, etc. that need to be included.
 Make sure you are thorough with every point and have everything you need to write the
instructions. Never, ever, rely on your memory!
 Even skipping a small step may lead to confusion amongst the readers.
 For example, forgetting to tell the reader about an important switch in a new piece of
equipment can not only be misleading but can also be dangerous.

4. What is technical description?

 A document that uses both visuals and text to inform a user of how to use a product or
complete a process. In the description, you can often find the name and an overview of the
product or process with key information about its functions and components.

5. What are the purposes of technical description?

 A technical description is a document created for the end-user to understand how a product,
process, or concept works. A technical description typically includes the names of the product
or process, gives a brief overview regarding its functions, and dives deep into its size, frames,
and other components.

Review of Related Literature at least 5 of a Selected Research

 Argumentative Review
This form examines literature selectively in order to support or refute an argument, deeply
embedded assumption, or philosophical problem already established in the literature. The
purpose is to develop a body of literature that establishes a contrarian viewpoint .
 Integrative Review
considered a form of research that reviews, critiques, and synthesizes representative literature
on a topic in an integrated way such that new frameworks and perspectives on the topic are
generated. The body of literature includes all studies that address related or identical
hypotheses or research problems.
 Historical Review
few things rest in isolation from historical precedent. Historical literature reviews focus on
examining research throughout a period of time, often starting with the first time an issue,
concept, theory, phenomena emerged in the literature, then tracing its evolution within the
scholarship of a discipline.
 Methodological Review
A review does not always focus on what someone said [findings], but how they came about
saying what they say [method of analysis]. Reviewing methods of analysis provides a framework
of understanding at different levels [i.e. those of theory, substantive fields, research approaches,
and data collection and analysis techniques], how researchers draw upon a wide variety of
knowledge ranging from the conceptual level to practical documents for use in fieldwork in the
areas of ontological and epistemological consideration, quantitative and qualitative integration,
sampling, interviewing, data collection, and data analysis.
 Systematic Review
This form consists of an overview of existing evidence pertinent to a clearly formulated research
question, which uses pre-specified and standardized methods to identify and critically appraise
relevant research, and to collect, report, and analyze data from the studies that are included in
the review.

Instruction Set – at least 3 using components in technical writing.

 Do a careful audience and task analysis

Early in the process, define the audience and situation of your instructions. Remember that defining an
audience means defining the level of familiarity your readers have with the topic.

 Determine the number of tasks

How many tasks are there in the procedure you are writing about? Let’s use the term procedure to refer
to the whole set of activities your instructions are intended to discuss. A task is a semi-independent
group of actions within the procedure: for example, setting the clock on a microwave oven is one task in
the big overall procedure of operating a microwave oven.

 Determine the best approach to the step-by-step discussion

For most instructions, you can focus on tasks, or you can focus on tools (or features of tools).  In a task
approach (also known as task orientation) to instructions on using a phone-answering service, you’d
have these sections:

 Recording your greeting

 Playing back your messages
 Saving your messages
 Forwarding your messages
 Deleting your messages, and so on
