Project Title: ______________________________

Project Title: Title of the project must be brief, simple and catchy. By just reading the title, you
can determine what the project is all about. In other words, say briefly what you set out to do.
Ensure that the title of your project states clearly what your investigation is about as it pertains to
Mathematics and its relation to the everyday life. Use your project description to help you.
Example:
Title: Designing a basketball hoop-Why is a circle?

Table of Contents: Include each heading (introduction, method of data collection, …) and their
page number.

Introduction: What problem you are trying to solve and why? It includes a description of the
problem, context of the investigation (background information), and the expected benefit of
carrying out the project, aim and objectives. It should convince the reader why the project is
important. Explain how the project will impact lives or add to something meaningful.

Example: It is amazing the number of scores that professional basketballers can make without
error by throwing a ball from a distance into hoop. Many aspiring basketballers practice daily to
learn the skills that these basketballers have. Some basket ballers say that it is not just skills but
other factors including the angle of throwing the ball, the distance away, the strength put in
throwing the ball among others factors. What about the hoop? Every single basketball hoop is
circular. Does the shape of the hoop contribute to being able to score these ‘perfect hoops’? In
order to answer this question, this investigation was carried out to determine the most suitable
shape for a basketball hoop. The number of goals scored using the traditional hoop was
compared to the number scored using square, rectangular and hexagonal hoops.

Method of Data Collection: Inform the reader of what you have done to gather data, and
explain why.

● State who or what you will use collect data.

● Explain exactly how you collected data (Provide all steps)
● Give reason for each step in your collection of data.

Example: The area enclosed by the circular hoop was calculated and hoops were made using
frames to enclose an area. The dimensions of the frames were calculated to ensure that a standard
basketball could pass through each frame. The area enclosed by a standard basketball hoop is
1641 cm2. Efforts were made to use dimensions which would give this approximate area. The
hoops in the different shapes were made with the enclosed areas …The dimension of shapes
were as follows…

Note that this data collection sheet will not be graded. It is a means of helping you gather
your data in tables. These same table can be used in the presentation of data after organizing
the data.

Presentation of Data: The data gathered should be presented into visual diagrams in order to be
easily analyzed. You may use the table and graphs. Graph has several types; the line graph, bar
graph, pie graph and pictograph. Choose what type of graph that you prefer to use and importantly
which is appropriate to the topic under investigation.. Label all diagrams. Example. Bar chart
comparing the number of goals scored by the different shaped hoops.

Analysis/ Interpretation of Data: What does each table or graph show? What pattern do you
see from the table and or graphs? You may include calculations in your interpretation such as
mean, median, mode etc.

Discussion of Findings: What patterns did you find in your Analysis above and what does it
mean? Use what you already know (prior knowledge) and information you collected through
your investigation to offer an explanation of the results. How did the use of Mathematics assist in
finding answers to your investigation? Who could use this data? How could they use it? You
may include suggestions depending on the investigation.
