its components like Sluices and Crest Gates
1 Describe the component parts of a spillway.
2 Explain different types of spillways used in dam.
3 What are spillway crest gates? Explain different types of spillway
crest gates.
4 What do you need to know in order to design a spillway?
5 What is the main purpose of providing friction blocks at toe of
spillway?
6 “A Spillway is a safety valve in a dam” justify the statement.
7 Discuss the location of „Main spillway‟ and „Subsidiary spillway‟
in gravity dam as well as in earthen dam.
8 Discuss Cavitation on spillway.
9 Discuss briefly the design principles that are involved in the
design of an ogee spillway and a chute spillway.
10 How would you compute the discharge passing over an ogee
spillway? Discuss the various factors affecting coefficient of
discharge in the discharge equation.

12 An overflow spillway with its upstream face vertical is to be

design for a flood of 7200 cumecs. Height of spillway crest above
river bed is 52 m. The end walls of spillway are 75 m apart and
there are 5 piers, each 2 m wide. Determine total head over the
crest of spillway. Take C = 2.2, Ka = 0.10 and Kp = 0.01. Also
draw spillway profile.
