Content of the Lesson

This Episode focuses on the classroom structure and routines performed by teachers
in class to provide a safe, friendly non-threatening and caring environment. Effective
classroom routines ensure order and discipline to help the students to stay calm and
focused in their daily works.
Routines are the backbone of daily classroom life. They facilitate teaching and
learning. Routines don’t just make the life of the teacher easier. They save valuable
classroom time. Efficient routines make it easier for students to learn and achieve
more.

Establishing routines early in the school year:

 Enables you to run your daily activities run smoothly;
 Ensures you to manage time efficiently;
 Help you maintain order in the classroom;
 Makes you more focused in teaching because you spend less time in giving
directions/instructions; and

Observe
Observe a class and list down the classroom rules formulated by the resource
Teacher. Cite the importance of these rules.
Classroom rules are imperative and must be reinforced for learners’ safety and
security. Rules also teach discipline and self-control. Rules eliminate stress and will
provide a more pleasant, secured and non-threatening environment. Rules ensure the
students’ engagement and focus in their classroom activities.

Guide Questions
Analyze the routines set by the Resource Teacher by answering the following questions.
1. Were the routines effective in ensuring discipline and order in the class? Why?
Why not?
According to Dr. Fred Jones the author of Tools for Teaching (2007) a classroom
routine is simply a well-rehearsed response to a teacher’s directive. This helps minimize
off task behavior. When you have gaps in your routine you allow stress to enter the
classroom, which will have you spending most of the time redirecting students. And I
completely agree with his statement: establishing a classroom routine is a practice in
maintaining good discipline within the classroom; you are modeling their behavior. A
classroom routine is very important in a class; a teacher must implement a classroom
routine to ensure discipline and to make the classroom run smoothly. Students will also
be aware of the pattern that they should follow during your class, which will assist them
in analyzing the things that you want in class. A well-managed classroom will have a
positive impact on the learners and, as a result, a good learning environment.

2. Which of those routines were systematic and consistently implemented? Explain your
answer.
The following routine mentioned below were the systematic and consistently
implemented in the classroom by the resource teacher. It is regularly implemented by
the teacher and learner during the class discussion.
 Class opening prayer
 Checking of attendance
 Asking the previous topic
 Proper discussion
 Asking the student that are related to the discussion
 Giving of assessment
 Giving of assignment
 Snack Break / Lunch break
3. Analyze each given rule. What circumstances led to the formulation of the rule?

Let’s Write a Journal

Journal Entry#6 Management and Routines in the Classroom!
Your entry should contain your understanding and reflection on the
given concept.

Having classroom management and routines in the

classroom helps to have a conducive and appropriate
learning environment. According to Dr. Fred Jones the
author of Tools for Teaching (2007) a classroom routine is
simply a well-rehearsed response to a teacher’s directive.
This helps minimize off task behavior. When you have gaps
in your routine you allow stress to enter the classroom,
which will have you spending most of the time redirecting
students. And, as a future teacher, I agree with him. A
teacher must provide a student with direction or
guidelines. It will greatly assist them in controlling their
behavior as well as in the classroom. Each teacher should
establish classroom routines and rules. It will aid in the
development of learners' attitudes toward the classroom
setting and will also make students aware of what you want
in your class. Both of you will benefit; the teacher will have
a well-managed classroom environment, and the learner
will gain respect and discipline in the classroom. Setting
rules and procedures will incorporate values and
knowledge.
Self-Learning Activity
Reflect on the various routines observed.
1. Which of the routines will you most likely apply in your class? Why? Why not?
A prayer before beginning a class is a routine that I will most likely implement in my
future classes. The reason for this is that I want to begin my day with God's presence
and guidance. Beginning each day with a prayer will inspire everyone to fight every
battle they face. And as a teacher, I want to share that knowledge with my students. I
want them to see and remember God all the time, and I always encourage them to keep
God at the center of their lives as learners and students. I want them to instill the
importance of faith and hope in their students.

2. Reflect on the various classroom rules set by the Resource Teacher. Will you have
the same rules? If not, what rules are you going to employ? Explain your answer.

Based on my observations of Mr. Rex, my resource teacher, I greatly appreciate his

efforts and the rules he established for his class. And I believe I will apply the same rules
to Mr. Rex. He makes a concerted effort to present the best lesson and method of
instruction so that everyone understands his discussion. He also follows proper
classroom procedures such as beginning the class with a prayer, checking attendance,
asking why someone is absent, presenting the class energizer, submitting the
assignment, proper discussion with questioning or asking the student, assessment and
assignment giving, and finally, the closing prayer. And I'll never forget the things he
taught the learner before I went out. He established rules that the first row should be
the first to go out, followed by the other rows. Learners can go out properly, and I am
really impressed by how well it is organized.
