GENERAL BIOLOGY 1
Week – 1 Module – 1
Cell theory & Cell Structures and Functions

*WHAT’S NEW

1. All living things are composed of more cells.

2. The cell is the basic unit of life.
3. All cells arise from Pre-Existing Cells

*WHAT`S MORE

1. Rudolf Virchow 4. Robert Hooke

2. Theodor Schwann 5. Anton Von Leeuwenhoek
3. Matthias Schleiden

*WHATS NEW

1. The cell theory states that all biological organisms are composed of cells ; cells over the unit
of life & all life come preexisting life.
2. Cell theory
3. Around 1850, a German doctor named Rudolf Virchow was studying cells under a
microscope when he happened to see them dividing & forming new cells. He realized that
living cells produce new cells through division. Based on this realization, Virchow proposed
that living cells arise only from living cells.
4. Anton van Leeuwenhoek used single-lens Microscope which he made to make the first
observations of bacteria & protozoa.
5. The development of the microscope.

*WHAT I HAVE LEARNED

Date Scientist Discovery

1665 A. Robert Hooke Observed the remains of dead plant cells.

B.1676 Anton Van C. Tiny living organisms which the named

Leeuwenhoek animalcules under his microscope.

1838 Mathias Schleiden D. All plant parts are made of cells.

E. 1839 F. Theodor Schwann Stated that all animals are made of cells.

1838 G. Rudolf Virchow H. All cells come from pre-existing cells.

*WHAT I CAN DO

As stated in one of the statements of cell theory “all cell come from pre-existing cells”.
Cells are capable of dividing itself to produce new cells. These new cells will replace the cells
that have been damaged by the contract of the sharp object.
