Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: The Three Branches of Government and What They Do

Objectives:
Students will be able to identify the three branches of government.
Students will be able to explain the roles of each branch.
State Standards:

1.CG.2 Describe the basic purpose, structure, and functions of South Carolina’s government at
both the local and state level.

This indicator was developed to encourage inquiry into the hierarchy of local and state
government, how they work together, and the basic responsibilities they have for the people of
South Carolina.

Context: I will be teaching this lesson as a part of history class. This knowledge will be crucial
in the next lessons where we go into greater detail about the government and how laws are made.
The prior knowledge necessary before this lesson will be knowing who the important people in
government are and what the purpose of government is as a whole. In order to prepare the
students for this lesson we will talk about the bigger picture concepts regarding the government.

Data: Students will be put in groups of 2. They will pick their own partner and if any groups
need to be corrected that will be noted for future lessons.

Detailed paragraphs from here on down.

Procedures:
Introduction (15 minutes): When students walk into the room they will put their
belongings in the designated area. They then will sit in their desks where they will wait for my
instruction. Then I will ask students to write on a piece of paper what concepts about the
government they already know. Then as a class we will do a recap of what we have learned so
far about the government and how it operates. I will introduce the three branches of government
before starting this assignment using a video. https://youtu.be/OvwlRTYvU8o

Teacher Directed (5 minutes): I will tell students to find a partner to do an activity. Once
students find their partner I will hand out a piece of white paper. I will tell students to fold the
paper in 3 sections. Along with this piece of white paper I will be passing out to students a
handout with information about the three branches of government.
Collaborative (20 minutes): I will ask students to read the handout given to them. I then will ask
them to create their own informational paper in their own words. I would like them to add in
information that would help them to understand these concepts such as using concepts that they
see in their everyday life that may relate to how these branches operate. This could be saying
who int heri life would play the role as president, supreme court, and house of representatives.

Independent Digital (20 minutes): After students have completed their partner work they will
head back to their own seats. Here they will take out chromebooks where I will tell them to go to
the website https://www.icivics.org/games/branches-power. They will navigate this source
independently and I will ask them to show me their progress at the end of the allotted time. After
I have seen how much most students have completed I will determine if there needs to be any
work done at home.
Closure (10 minutes): At the end of class I will have students do an exit ticket. On this exit
ticket I will ask them to put one fact that they have learned. After they hand me their exit ticket I
will read them aloud so that other students can also maybe learn something they had brushed by
while doing their work. Then I will dismiss the students and they will get a grade for the paper
activity as well as the online activity.

Rationale: You must have at least two paragraphs (one for each mandatory piece of
multimedia)
Multimedia 1= https://www.icivics.org/games/branches-power This is the educational game that
will be used for the independent digital part of the lesson. I chose this piece of media because it
is a fun interactive way to get students engaged. I chose this game because it lets students act as
if they are controlling the three branches of government. I think this is a fun idea because it will
make students feel special and have fun while also learning something.I know this media is high
quality by the way it is set up. The website has a very clean look and it is easy to navigate.
(Content quality - 2 learning goal alignment-1 feedback-2 motivation- 1 presentation-2
interaction-2 reusability-1 standards compliance- 2) This app is very inclusive as it has
translators so those who dont speak english could also use it.
Multimedia 2= https://youtu.be/OvwlRTYvU8o this video will be used to briefly explain
the three branches of government to students before they do their assignments. This will
support student learning by giving them multiple ways to take in this information so no
student feels confused. I know this video is of high quality because of the source. This
video is by a youtube channel that is made specifically for kids' education. It is faitly
inclusive however I will be aiding that by giving students multiple sources of knowledge.
