Most students will complete their work in class, but these 504 students may
have the evening to participate in the activity. Google’s spellcheck with the
assistance of the Grammarly extension will assist this accommodation. My EL
students speak a variety of languages, and will be able to use their Google

E Description

Engagemen Students will begin class with the following slide displayed at the front of the class.
t The teacher will present this slide using Microsoft PowerPoint.

After students individually identify two similarities between community and a jigsaw
puzzle, the students will be instructed to compare their thoughts with a partner
sitting close to them. The students will be instructed to find their best similarity and
will share that similarity with the class. The teacher will then lead the class in a
discussion on these similarities while also building connections to previously
learned concepts about serving a community. The teacher will also be guiding the
class discussion to the importance of community participation.

Engagemen In order to gauge student engagement, the teacher will walk amongst the students
t and will ensure that they are discussing the topic presented to them. The class
Assessment discussion after the student discussion will be a more calculated formative
assessment. Students who are eager to answer the prompt will be alternated with
students who are more hesitant to participate. Once the teacher feels the class has
properly been engaged with the topic, the class will enter the explanation portion of
the lesson.

Explanation The purpose of today’s lesson is to show how students can use their ideas and
efforts to benefit their community. Using PowerPoint, the students will review the
ideas discussed in the previous lessons relating to serving their community. The
term community service will be introduced to the students along with several
examples. This discussion will help students prepare for the activity that will be
used in the exploration and elaboration phase of the lesson.
During the class discussion, Level 3 questions in the Webb’s Depth of Knowledge
(DOK) will be verbally presented to the students. These questions will include;
1. What would happen if members of a society never participated in community
service.
2. What would happen if every members of a society participated in community

service.

Explanation The formative assessment in this section will be through the answering of verbal
Assessment higher order thinking questions in a class discussion.

Exploration Before exploration begins, the students will be instructed to open their
chromebooks. A school supported screen recording software, Securly, will be used
to view and record student process and professionalism during the assigned
lesson..

The master copy of the software, Jamboard, can be reached through the following
link.

Students will be given the opporotuinty to explore the lesson’s new software. The
software being used is Google’s Jamboard. The jamboard for the specific class
period will begin with a slide that students are free to explore on. The prompt for
this exploration page is “What is your favorite food?”. Students may learn the
components of creating a sticky note, textbox, image, drawing, or shape on the
new software.

Exploration will be assess through the teacher’s observation of student

participation. Studnets whom the teacher believes are not participating can be

approached by the teacher. Questions such as “What have you created so far?”
Assessment
and “What is your favorite part of this software so far?" can be asked by the
teacher. Other students will be viewed as successfully explored by their open

enthusiasm for the software’s capabilities.

Elaboration Students will be spending the elaboration portion of the lesson completing a class
diagram using Google Jamboard. The link to the specific class period’s Jamboard
will be shared on the teacher’s website and the school system’s Schoology
account. Once the link has been opened, the Jamboard will display five different
pages. These pages will be shared as work samples in another portion of this
document. The top of each page contains a discussion question that the class will
work through together with the teacher. The first discussion question will be done
by the teacher as an example for the other students. Once the students have been
shown how to participate with the software, the teacher will guide the class through
each page of the Jamboard.
The benefit and potential disadvantage of this format is the anonymous nature of
the software. For a benefit, the students can anonymously share their ideas without
the fear of public rejection from their peers. The disadvantage can come in the
temptation to stray from the purpose of the assignment and publicly answer a
question inappropriately. The teacher’s method for combating this disadvantage is
the use of the school system’s Securely screen recording software. This software
will allow a teacher to view which students answer questions inappropriately and
deduct points accordingly.
