Hello, my name is MaKenzie Brown. Today I will be talking about adult obesity related to
Saginaw County and resources that can help individuals to reduce the risk of obesity. Saginaw
Counties percentage of adult obesity is 42% comparing that to Michigan’s overall value is 36%.
This is concerning for adults in Saginaw County because this has an impact on health outcomes,
length of life, and the quality of life. There are multiple resources available for individuals such
as MyPlate which produces a plan that is based on age, sex, height, weight, and physical activity
levels. It then gives you a plan on the specific number of servings you should be eating of meat,
grains, fruits, vegetables, and more. This can help individuals to make sure they are eating the
correct amount of food that is necessary to fuel their body and provide the best health outcomes.
Along with MyPlate, having healthy eating habits can help to reduce obesity. Healthy eating
habits include incorporating fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Reducing dairy products but
when used having low or non-fat dairy products. Eating lean meats such as fish, poultry, lentils,
and beans. Reducing sugary drinks and drinking a lot of water. Also limiting sugar consumption
and saturated fat consumption. Another thing individuals can do to reduce the risk of obesity is
being physically active. There is an outdoor gym in Saginaw that is open to everyone for free it
is called The Fitness Court and is in the Frank N. Andersen Celebration Park. There are many
different parks in Saginaw County that have trails to walk on or ride bicycles. These
opportunities are free and easy to locate if you go to www.saginawcounty.com there is a map
with all the parks and trails located in Saginaw County. All these different things can help to
