2.0 INTRODUCTION

Businesses are aware that the need for creative and critical thinking is important

to their success. This lesson explains creative and critical thinking and shows the

importance of creative thinking and critical thinking in business. For example, in our

daily and professional lives, we make hundreds, if not thousands, of decisions. We

decide what to wear, which road to take to work, what to eat, which phone calls to take,

etc. In business, decisions have to be made about which product to promote, how to

promote that product, who to hire, etc. All of these decisions require different ways of

thinking, which can be creative, critical, or a combination of both creative and critical

thinking. Creative thinking is in search of new ways to tackle a problem. Think about a

time when you were stumped with what to do in a situation. Most of us have

experienced those situations in both our personal and professional lives. For example,

let's say that you are presented with a new project that will need you to do things

differently. This will require you to think in a different way to tackle this new project.

Furthermore, critical thinking is a more analysed and objective way to think about a

problem. It involves taking into consideration logic and reasoning. Someone in a

management position will need to use more critical thinking when making decisions

that influence other people's jobs and processes, such as safety procedures. When it

comes to issue that deal with other people, critical thinking is needed. For example,

when a manager is hiring new personnel, it requires critical thinking that analyses the

candidates before making a decision.

4.0 CONCLUSION

In conclusion, creative thinking is a powerful business tool that should

never be overlooked. Creative thinking can help a business to identify and explore

new opportunities and assist in problem solving, improving overall productivity.

Once a business is established, it is very easy to be seduced by the relative

simplicity of ‘business as usual’ or attracted by the incantation of ‘sell what we’ve

got’. Many business owners focus on remaining products, services or methodologies

and would rather make small tweaks to the existing, rather than developing fresh

new ideas to advance their business strategies. But, for those that think out of the

box, the rewards can be huge by finding new perspectives and removing the limits

we put on ourselves.
