Topic Introduction to Fraction Operations

Length of Unit (days) 21 classes - September 6th- 28th

Rationale
In this unit, students will learn about divisibility and fraction operations. The lessons in this unit have
been taught in a particular order, which allows students to have the foundational knowledge they need
to move on to the next lesson/unit. I broke down each section in the textbook chapter into multiple
lessons, where each class focused on a specific concept/example. This allows students to fully
understand and grasp the concept that is being taught.
Collaboration with peers has been incorporated into each lesson when possible. When students
are given the opportunity to collaborate with their peers, they can engage in deep mathematical
learning. To ensure collaborative learning is effective it must be complex, allow for argumentation, and
include sufficient language support. When these specific conditions are met, students spur each other’s
thinking (Hattie, Fisher & Frey, p.154).
Throughout the unit, many different formative assessments were used, such as mini-whiteboards, exit
slips, worksheets, and activities. The different forms of formative assessment provide me with ongoing
feedback and allows me to monitor my students learning. Formative assessments are very important as
it helps me gauge how my students are doing and how well they are understanding the material. It
allows me to have a clearer understanding if the students are needing more practice on a particular
topic/idea. I can make important instructional changes if needed, based on the feedback that these
assessments provide, indicating what the students need more help with. Exit slips and mini
whiteboards are low stake assessments that provide me with feedback with how the students are
understanding the concepts. I used mini whiteboards to begin class and review the main concept from
the previous day. Mini whiteboards are great as they are a non-permanent surface, which often allows
students to be less afraid to get the answer wrong. I used exit slips to gauge how well my students
understood the lesson that we had learnt that day and gauge how they are feeling about the concepts
that are being taught.
The assignments and quizzes will be used to assess the students’ knowledge after each section
in the chapter of the textbook. The unit test will begin as a formative assessment, and then become a
summative assessment after the students are given the opportunity to make corrections. Providing
feedback on the unit test will help students identify their strengths and weaknesses and focus on what
they need to work on most. This is important because it teaches students how to use the feedback they
were given and make changes to fix their mistakes.
