A. LESSON BRIEF: AMERICAN LITERATURE


B. KEY CONCEPTS:
American literature is literature predominantly written or produced in English in the
United States of America and its preceding colonies. Before the founding of the United States,
the Thirteen Colonies on the eastern coast of the present-day United States were heavily
influenced by British literature.
Some Famous American Writers and some of their Masterpieces before 21st Century:
• Washington Irving “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”
• Nathaniel Hawthorne “The Scarlet Letter”
• Edgar Allan Poe “The Cask Of Amontillado”
• William Cullen Bryant “Thanatopsis”
• John Steinbeck “The Pearl”
• Ernest Hemingway “For Whom the Bell Tolls”
• T.S. Eliot “Journey of the Magi”

Some Famous 21st Century American Writers:


• George R.R. Martin – he wrote the epic fantasy series of novels, A Song of Ice and
Fire, which inspired the iconic Emmy-winning HBO series Game of Thrones.
• Dan Brown - an American author best known for writing a series of Robert Langdon
novels; three such novels, namely The Da Vinci Code, Angels & Demons, and Inferno,
have been made into films, with Tom Hanks portraying Robert Langdon in all three
movies.
• Stephen King - Many of his books have been adapted into television series,
miniseries, and films such as “Under the Dome”, “Joyland”, etc.
• Jeff Kinny - an American author and cartoonist, best known for the children's book
series Diary of a Wimpy Kid. He also created the child-oriented website Poptropica.
• Rick Riordan - an American author. He is known for writing the Percy Jackson & the
Olympians series.
• Danielle Steel - best known for her romance novels. She is the bestselling author alive
and the fourth-bestselling fiction author of all time, with over 800 million copies sold.
As of 2021, she has written 190 books, including over 141 novels.
