 Question: What does COPC and AACUP stand for? What is their importance?

 Answer:
The Certificate of Program Compliance (COPC) is a recognition that the
specific degree programs being offered by SUCS/LUCS are fully compliant with the
policies, standards and guidelines of CHED.

The importance of CoPC is to ensure that the existing programs of the

State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) and state-run Local Universities and
Colleges (LUCs) are quality assured. ]If incase an SUC/LUC will not be able to
secure CoPC within two years from the effectivity of the CMO, its governing board
may decide whether or not to continue offering the program. A program that is
issued with COPC would mean that it is compliant to the Policies, Standards and
Guidelines (PSGs) set by CHED. This also means that the curriculum of the
program is attuned to quality education in accordance with the provisions of
Republic Act No. 7722, known as the Higher Education Act of 1994 at par with
international standards.

Another important accrediting entity is the AACCUP or the ACCREDITING

AGENCY OF CHARTED COLLEGES and UNIVERSITIES in the PHILIPPINES,
INC. Accreditation is viewed as a process by which an institution at the tertiary level
evaluates its educational activities, in whole or in part, and seeks an independent
judgment to confirm that it substantially achieves its objectives, and is generally
equal in quality to comparable institutions.

It is very important that a university or college be accredited so that the

attainment of quality in education an integral part of the higher education systems
more particularly among chartered state colleges and universities in the Philippines,
through a sustained program of internal and external assessment.
More specifically, Programs that have passed the standards, and are
awarded accreditation status: 1. lend prestige to member institutions, justified by the
possession of quality standards and unremitting efforts to maintain them at high
level; 2.help parents to know which program they may send their children to for
quality education; 3.make all those engaged in education aware of standards of
excellence which they should strive to attain; 4. make possible for those proposing
funding and those who are to fund, to know what to support and how much support
is needed; and 5. make possible for an evaluated program to know its strength and
weaknesses, and in what aspects it needs to develop.
So, the accreditation process empowers higher educational institutions by
helping them to analyze their loopholes, improve their academic structure, work on
it, and gain trust amongst individuals. It provides institutions an opportunity to design
their education and head in the direction of continuous improvement. Therefore,
accreditation is extremely important.
