SET: THE CAUSE AND EFFECT OF VERBAL ABUSE

AMONG STUDENTS IN SAN ISIDRO
GROUP MEMBERS: SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY Yelling and other forms of verbal abuse occur
with alarming frequency in Canada (Brendgen,
Wanner, & Vitaro, 2006). In Ontario, regulation
437/97 made under the Ontario College of
Teachers Act, states that abusing a student
verbally is an act of professional misconduct,
although teachers are rarely brought to a
disciplinary meeting solely based on verbal
abuse, as is seen in the public records. The
disciplinary committee has confirmed that
shouting at students is verbal abuse: ―The mere
fact of shouting at students constitutes verbal
abuse, in the circumstances of this case‖
(Ontario College of Teachers v Glazer, 2018,
para. 92). But it is unclear whether teachers
themselves view it that way.

Verbal abuse represents much form. Embarrass

word directed at a person, name calling, insults,
teasing, intimidation or making racist mark.
Academic achievement is the first aspect which
influences abuse at school. Therefore, the victim
live within fear, self-blame, feel weak and it
affects their personality traits and self-
confidence, so this situation makes them unable
to study well and they might hate going to school.

Furthermore, they will lose their opportunities

to participate with others or enjoy school
activities. Hence, they will gain less academic
performance and low educational attainment.
There is a strong relationship between verbal
abuse and school quality such as class size, lack
of library, sports facilities. Both abuser and
victims feel more negative about school, and
persistent bullying may lead to stress and
depression. Verbal abuse can lead to anxiety,
low self-esteem, hopelessness and isolation.

This study aimed to investigate the impact of

verbal abuse on student’s academic performance
from their perspective. The verbal abuse exist in
all communities as well as schools whether
government or private. They are not recorded but
felt by some and this might affect the victim or
the abuser too. School verbal abuse creates
negative environment in the school. Though it
may not harm the victim physically but it affects
them mentally and emotionally.
