EXCECUTIVE SUMMARY
The project site is approximately 500m from the Migadini stage at Chaani Primary
School, Changamwe. The project was identified as a priority by the Young Mothers
CBO as it addresses the environmental degradation that is currently being witnessed
at the institution. In line with the government’s efforts in restoring forest cover, the
CBO is kickstarting a tree-planting campaign with the goal of planting up to 7,000
trees across Changamwe sub-county by the end of the short-rains season. As a
starting point, the organization shall plant 1,000 tree seedlings at the already
allocated fields in Chaani Primary School, where learners have been exposed to
severe environmental dangers due to lack of tree cover in the area.

This project’s long-term aim is to address the adverse factors that have been brought
to learners at the school due to lack of trees. Classroom roofs being blown off by
strong winds, kids suffering from respiratory infections brought about by dust and
learners taking their lunch under the hot sun without a shade cover is a
dehumanizing scene that welcomes you into the school’s compound. By planting and
constant maintenance of trees,a greater majority of these challenges will have been
addressed.

The project involves procurement of 1,000 different variety tree seedlings as

discussed later in this proposal, provision of a stable water source for the growth of
the trees, and an efficient piping system for watering the trees.

ORGANIZATIONAL PROFILE
Young Mothers CBO, registered as Crying Voice of Young Mothers was formed and
first registered in September 2021. This is a Community Based Organization(CBO)
based in Changamwe Constituency comprised of selfless hardworking young
women aged between 18-35 years. As a community, member women are empowered
economically through financial education from industry leaders and funding to steer
their income generating projects. Politically, the organization sets out to sensitize
women on the benefits of them holding leadership positions without fear of prejudice
on grounds of their gender. Through strategic planning, coordination and
partnerships with other like-minded institutions, the organization is consequently
making a tremendous transformation in the lives of these women.
For this project, implementation will be made possible by the management team of
the Crying Voice of Young Mothers CBO led by the overall coordinator of the project
(Steven Oloo). The organization’s environment department shall take full
responsibility of the activities at the project’s site. Procurement of seedlings and other
resources that will be needed for the project will be done through an Internal
Procurement Committee that will be appointed as stipulated in the CBO’s
constitution. Our policy in procurement of goods and services, tender bids and
implementation of projects preaches about zero corruption and no corruption acts
shall be tolerated.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
a. Problem Statement
Chaani primary school lies in the heart of Chaani ward. A few meters from the
school, there sits a pile of garbage with a chocking stench that makes it hard for
learners to concentrate on their studies. To worsen the scenario, when you walk into
the school’s compound, dried up grass and a bare dusty field is all you will see.
Efforts by the community to get rid of the dumpsite have remained futile as the
government is less involved in the matter. In the school, learners are having a tough
time as dust blowing from the field finds its way through the windows, filling their
eyes, books and uniforms with sand particles. This has caused many learners severe
respiratory infections thus the need to restore the ground cover by planting trees and
grass that will act as windbreakers.
b. Rationale
This project will be of significant value to the Chaani Primary fraternity as it will
restore the ground cover to further prevent soil erosion, provide a cool environment
with fresh air which will be conducive for learning and socialization and provide a
wind-breaking mechanism so as to prevent the school’s roofs from being blown off in
the future. The project will also be a great learning experience for the pupils as they
will learn on the need to conserve the environment and the benefits that comes with
it.
Young Mothers CBO is the best suited organization to implement this project because
of the special relationship with the school as most members of the CBO have children

Young Mothers
who study at the institution. The close proximity of the CBO to the school will also
ensure that the trees planted will see their way through to maturity by constant
maintenance by the group members.
c. Project Goals and Objectives
The main goal of the project is to rehabilitate the environment at Chaani primary
School by planting of trees.
The specific objectives of the project include;
1. To plant 1000 tree seedlings at the allocated plot of land.
2. To install water tanks and a piping system to provide water for the grass and
trees.
3. To create a safe park for kids to play and conduct outdoor activities.
d. Project outcomes/Results
The primary outcome of this project is that the environment will be conserved by
restoration of ground cover, growth of trees and learners will get first-hand insights
on the importance of environment conservation.
e. Project Outputs
 Installation of a water tank; 10,000 Liters capacity
 Installation of a piping system
 Planting of 1,000 seedlings
 Planting of grass
 Sensitization of pupils on environment conservation
f. Project activities
The project’s activities shall commence with environment sensitization meetings with
the boy scouts and girl guides of Chaani Primary School, two groups that were
identified by Young Mothers CBO for their efforts in environment conservation.
Afterwards, procurement of professional services and other resources to be used in
the exercise shall be done through the CBO’s Internal Procurement Committee. 50
members of the CBO, the Chaani Primary administration, local administrative
leaders, pupils and other guests will be invited in the main tree planting event that
will be conducted on an agreed upon date once all the inputs are ready.
See annex 1.0 for the complete work plan.
g. Target Beneficiaries
 The project will be of value to over 1,000 pupils studying at Chaani Primary
School
 The community around the school will also benefit from the project as trees
modify the atmospheric conditions of a place
 This will also be success for Young Mothers CBO and partner organizations

h. Project Budget
kindly see annex 1.0
i. Risk and Assumptions
 The project will be a failure if the community, Young Mothers CBO and the
school’s administration will not take responsibility in maintaining the planted
seedling by regular watering, mulching and other routine maintenance
practices that trees need. However, we believe that all parties involved will
not lose enthusiasm for the project and will take full responsibility as required.
j. Project Sustainability
The project will be managed by Crying Voice of Young Mothers Community Based
Organization with support from local administration and the Chaani Primary
teaching and non-teaching staff. To ensure sustainability of the project, immense
training will be done to the pupils (girl guides and scouts) who will keep a constant
eye on the trees as they grow. Young Mothers’ team will also visit the site after
regular intervals agreed upon so as to ensure sustainability of the project. Water
tanks will also be installed to provide a steady supply of water for the growing trees
and grass.
k. Consideration on crosscutting issues
Road safety and HIV have been key crosscutting issues in the community. Upon
close consideration however, climate change is emerging as one of the key issues that
should be addressed with immediate effect. By seeing this project to completion,
Young Mothers and the Chaani Primary School fraternity will be taking a step in
fighting for a cooler, safer and sustainable climate for all.
This project will also be inclusive as learners with special needs will also get an equal
chance to plant trees and be part of climate change advocates.
l. Monitoring and evaluation
The project’s success will be monitored monthly by Crying Voice of Young Mothers’
head of Environment department and reported to the CBO and other organizations
involved. Number of healthy trees surviving out of the 1,000 planed will be the key
metric used in the evaluation process.
