II. Task
A. An article in the Journal of Sound and Vibration described a study investigating the
relationship between noise exposure and hypertension. The data given in the table are
representative of those reported in the article.
Solution:
1. Documentation:
2. Do these data provide sufficient evidence that there is a positive linear relationship
between the two variables?
The data provides sufficient evidence that there is a positive linear relationship between
the two variables. Based on the graph, the slope is positive because it rises from the right. In
the regression line Y=-7.60 + 0.14 X, the slope is b1 = 0.14. It means that there is positive
correlation between the two variables.
3. What does R^2 imply?
The R-squared is a statistical measure on how close the data are to the fitted regression
line. With the value 0.466856927 or 0.5, it is considered a weak or low effect size.
4. Using the regression model, predict the blood pressure level associated with a sound
pressure of 7.5 decibels.
Y=-7.60 + 0.14 X
Y=-7.60 + 0.14 (7.5)
Y=-6.55 mmHg
This means that if the sound pressure is 7.5 decibels, the predicted blood pressure level
is -6.55 mmHg.
5. Table:
Legend:
** Highly significant
* significant ns
Not significant
BRIEF DESCRIPTION:
Since a person’s blood pressure depends on the noise, it means that the dependent variable
is the hypertension and the independent variable is the noise exposure. Based from the
calculated data, there is significant difference between the hypertension and noise exposure.
Therefore, we can solve the regression line.
B. The following data provides the grades of 10 randomly selected engineering students
on their Statistics Class, and a course on Operations Research. Are the two variables,
Statistics Performance and Operations Research Performance significantly correlated?
Solution:
1. Documentation:
2. Table:
Pearson’s r DE P-value
0.518335106/0.52 S 0.124810437
Legend:
** Highly significant
* significant ns
Not significant
BRIEF DESCRIPTION:
The value of r= 0.52 indicates that there is a moderately high positive correlation
between the Statistics Performance and Operations Research Performance. At 0.05 level of
significance, there is no significant relationship between the two variables.
