INSTRUCTIONS TO THE CANDIDATES

1. The marks in the parenthesis are indicative only.


2. This take-home assignment carries 10% weightage towards the internal assessment
3. The assignment needs to be done in the subject notebook only and that must be submitted
to me on Monday 21 November, 2022 during the lecture time.
4. The subject notebook must have all the notes and class exercises of the previous lectures.
5. Late submission will not be accepted.

1. Given a normal distribution with µ=50 and , what is the probability that
i) X>43
ii) X<42
iii) X lies between 45 to 55
iv) X lies between 55 to 65 [4+4+6+6 marks]
2. Suppose annual ground coffee expenditures for households purchasing it are approximately
normally distributed with a mean of $45.16 and a standard deviation of $10.00. [4+4+6
marks]
i) Find the probability that a household spent less than $25.00.
ii) Find the probability that a household spent more than $50.00.
iii) What proportions of the households spent between $30.00 and $40.00?
3. A set of final examination grades in an introductory statistics course is normally distributed,
with a mean of 73 and a standard deviation of 8. [4+6+6 marks]
i) What is the probability that a student scored below 91 on this exam?
ii) What is the probability that a student scored between 65 and 89?
iii) What is the probability that a student scored between 80 and 90?
4. What do you mean by a continuous random variable? Give two examples. [5 marks]
5. What do you mean by a discrete random variable? Give two examples. [5 marks]
6. Write any three characteristics of Normal distribution. [5 marks]
7. Write all the criteria for application of Binomial distribution for calculating probability. [5
marks]
8. For the following random variables (X) which follow Binomial distribution find the mean and
standard deviation: [4+4+4 marks]
i) n=4 and p=0.10
ii) n=5, p=0.8
iii) n=3, p=0.5
9. In a survey of fast food restaurants, it is observed that 90% of the times the orders are filled
accurately. Suppose a sample of last 3 orders are evaluated, what is the probability that
i) All three orders will be filled accurately?
ii) None of the three orders will be filled accurately?
iii) At least 2 orders will be filled accurately?
iv) Not more than 2 orders will be filled accurately?
v) Find mean and standard deviation of the accurately filled orders

10. Suppose player A wins a game if he gets ‘6’ while rolling a die. If the game is played 7 times,
what is the probability that [4+4+6]
i) He wins 5 games?
ii) He wins no game?
iii) He wins more than 5 games?
