Unit-II: Probability Distributions (Binomial and Normal)
1. Given a normal distribution with µ=50 and , what is the probability that
i) X>43
ii) X<42
iii) X lies between 45 to 55
iv) X lies between 55 to 65 [4+4+6+6 marks]
2. Suppose annual ground coffee expenditures for households purchasing it are approximately
normally distributed with a mean of $45.16 and a standard deviation of $10.00. [4+4+6
marks]
i) Find the probability that a household spent less than $25.00.
ii) Find the probability that a household spent more than $50.00.
iii) What proportions of the households spent between $30.00 and $40.00?
3. A set of final examination grades in an introductory statistics course is normally distributed,
with a mean of 73 and a standard deviation of 8. [4+6+6 marks]
i) What is the probability that a student scored below 91 on this exam?
ii) What is the probability that a student scored between 65 and 89?
iii) What is the probability that a student scored between 80 and 90?
4. What do you mean by a continuous random variable? Give two examples. [5 marks]
5. What do you mean by a discrete random variable? Give two examples. [5 marks]
6. Write any three characteristics of Normal distribution. [5 marks]
7. Write all the criteria for application of Binomial distribution for calculating probability. [5
marks]
8. For the following random variables (X) which follow Binomial distribution find the mean and
standard deviation: [4+4+4 marks]
i) n=4 and p=0.10
ii) n=5, p=0.8
iii) n=3, p=0.5
9. In a survey of fast food restaurants, it is observed that 90% of the times the orders are filled
accurately. Suppose a sample of last 3 orders are evaluated, what is the probability that
i) All three orders will be filled accurately?
ii) None of the three orders will be filled accurately?
iii) At least 2 orders will be filled accurately?
iv) Not more than 2 orders will be filled accurately?
v) Find mean and standard deviation of the accurately filled orders

10. Suppose player A wins a game if he gets ‘6’ while rolling a die. If the game is played 7 times,
what is the probability that [4+4+6]
i) He wins 5 games?
ii) He wins no game?
iii) He wins more than 5 games?
