CHAPTER 2
Q-6 Differentiate between cotter joint & knuckle joint.

N/mm2, [τ] = 55 N/mm2 and [6cr] = 150 N/mm2. Find: (1) Diameter of rod end (2)
Diameter of the enlarged end of Spigot (3) Width and Thickness of cotter.
Q-8 A double riveted lap joint is to be used to connect two plates 12 mm thick. The diameter
and pitch of the rivets are 15 mm and 60 mm, respectively. If the allowable stresses for
the plates and rivets are: [6t] = 65 N/mm2, [τ] = 55 N/mm2 and [6cr] = 90 N/mm2, find:
(1) Strength of the joint (2) Efficiency of the joint.

E= 2× 105 N/mm2.

Q-13 Give Difference between shaft, Spindle and Axle.
Q-14 Give the classification of coupling and enlist requirement of good coupling.
Q-15 A muff coupling transmits 75 KW at 200 rpm. Determine the diameter of shaft and

Q-24. A deep groove ball bearing having SKF 6309 number is rotating at 1500 rpm. The
bearing is subjected to radial load of 8500 N and thrust load of 5500 N. The inner
race of the bearing rotate with shaft. Find the rating life and average life of the
bearing. The dynamic capacity of the bearing is 41500 N and the bearing is in
continuous service .Take X= 0.56 & Y=1.3.
