IV. LESSON PROPER:
A. ACTIVITY
Activity no. 1
Picture Analysis

B. ANALYSIS
1. How the waves form?
2. Are waves important to us?
3. How many waves there are?
4. What is seismic waves?

C. ABSTRACTION

Seismic Waves - are the waves of energy caused by the sudden breaking of rock
within the earth or an explosion. They are the energy that travels through
the earth and is recorded on seismographs.
 Body waves – Primary or P waves. Compression wave. It move faster than
S waves and can
pass through
solids and liquids.
This is the fastest
kind of seismic
wave. The P wave
can move through
solid rock and fluids, like water or the liquid layers of the earth. It pushes
and pulls the rock it moves through just like sound waves push and pull

the air.

- Secondary or S-wave. Transverse wave. It move slower and can

pass through solids only.
This characteristic of S
waves provide the
information that Earth
has a solid inner core
and a liquid outer core.

 Surface Waves
 Rayleigh Waves
-The
other
kind of
surface
wave
is the
Rayleigh wave, named for John William Strutt, Lord
Rayleigh, who mathematically predicted the existence of this
kind of wave in 1885. A Rayleigh wave rolls along the ground
just like a wave rolls across a lake or an ocean. Because it
rolls, it moves the ground up and down, and side-to-side in the
same direction that the wave is moving. Most of the shaking
felt from an earthquake is due to the Rayleigh wave, which
can be much larger than the other waves.
 Love Waves
- The first
kind of
surface wave
is called a
Love wave,
named after
A.E.H. Love, a British mathematician who worked out the
mathematical model for this kind of wave in 1911. It's the
fastest surface wave and moves the ground from side-to-
side.

Layers and Discontinuities of the Earth

Layers of the Earth
 Crust – the solid rock layer that makes up the outermost shell of Earth, but you
only live on the very top of it.
 Mantle – beneath the crust. The thickest of all the layers.
 Outer core – it is the only liquid layer. It is composed of iron and nickel that
form a very thick liquid that flows chaotically.
 Inner core – the densest
layer and is composed of
solid iron with a small of
nickel.
Discontinuities of the Earth
 Conrad Discontinuity:
Transition zone
between SIAL and
SIMA.

 Mohorovicic Discontinuity: Transition zone between the Crust  and

Mantle.
 Repiti Discontinuity: Transition zone between Outer mantle and Inner
mantle.
 Gutenberg Discontinuity:  Transition zone between Mantle and Core.
 Lehman Discontinuity: Transition zone between Outer core and Inner
core.

D. APPLICATION
Activity no. 2
Peer-group

Directions: In this activity, students will be group into 4 groups. Two groups will be assigned
to compare and contrast the p waves and s waves using the Venn diagram. Hence, the other two groups
will be assigned in drawing and labelling the layers of the Earth together with its discontinuities. Each
group will choose one representative to present their output in class.

V. EVALUATION:
Activity no. 3
Complete the Table
Directions: In this activity, students will complete the given table with the data needed in each boxes.
