On December 3, 2022, at approximately 1519 hours, the Martin County Sheriff’s Office received several 911
calls in reference to a shooting that occurred at 2929 S.E. Ocean Blvd, Apt 135-4 Stuart, Florida (Cedar Point
Apartments.) One of the 911 callers was Susan Hootman. She advised her husband, Hugh Hootman shot the
neighbors downstairs. Susan Hootman stated her husband was currently with her and took the gun apart and

then it was left outside. Susan Hootman stated there was an ongoing dispute over the washer and dryer.
Susan Hootman then told 911 Dispatcher the victims were named i Multiple Martin County
Deputies and Stuart Police Department Officers responded and obsérved two deceased individuals on the
walkway adjacent to apartment number 4. The suspect, Hugh Hootman,
was taken into custody without
incident. | responded to the above location,.upon arrival, | met with Lieutenant Schimelfanick who provided

the following information.
Lieutenant Schimelfanick stated he was first on scene to the incident. When he arrived, he observed two
subjects, male and female, lying in the ground near the entrance to several apartments. It was quickly
determined both subjects were deceased from apparent gunshot wounds. Lieutenant Schimelfanick stated
other members from the Sheriff’s Office arrived and took positions around the apartment complex. A short
time later the suspect (defendant) Hugh Duane Hootman was taken into custody.
| conducted a brief walk through of the scene and observed two elderly subjects, one male and female. The
deceased female was lying on her right side. There was blood on the torso area of her shirt; the male subject
was laying on his back with blood coming from his head and torso area. There were multiple bullet casings
laying next to each of the decedents. The scene was secured until Martin County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene
arrived. ;
| responded to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office where Hugh Hootman was transported for questioning.
Detective Carolan and | then conducted an interview with Hugh. Detective Carolan read Hugh Miranda Rights.
Hugh Hootman stated he understood. Hugh Hootman went on to say several days ago the victim came
to his (Hootman's) apartment and confronted his wife Susan Hootman. jn was upset that the Hugh’s left the
community laundry room door open. Hugh Hootman stated [cussed and yelled at his wife, Susan
Hootman which in return made her very upset.
Hugh Hootman stated today, December 3, he went downstairs to check his mail at the community mailbox. Hugh
Hootman stated a

was approximately 5-6 feet away from when he fired his weapon.
Hugh Hootman stated he then walked back upstairs to his apartment where his wife Susan Hootman was located and set ‘

Further questioning post-Miranda revealed Hugh Hootman has a CCW and he normally carries his 9mm pistol in his
pocket for protection. Hugh Hootman also confirmed he never keeps a round in the chamber of the firearm. Hugh
Hootman stated he was, “so sorry, wish | could take it back”. Hugh Hootman also wrote an apology letter which is
attached to this Affidavit. Hugh Hootman kept reiterating how upset he was that{had yelled at Susan
Hootman and would not apologize.
Based on the above investigation, Hugh Hootman violated Florida State Statue 782.04 First Degree Murder, by
