information on Canvas. It’s important you check Canvas daily for lessons.

***FIRST HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS (It’s a grade!): COMMUNICATION ****

Step 1: Students—Download and log in to the Page High School app. You can find this in your app store by simply
typing in “Page High School.” Your login info is:
 Username: studentID@stu.gcsnc.com
 Password: Birthday NO slashes (Example: 12022005 for Dec. 2, 2005)

Then, add this course to your alerts. You will need to open the app, swipe and click on “My Alerts.” Complete the
following steps:
 Enable Push Notifications (and all other alerts).
 Click on the bottom icon that says “Personal.”
 Find my name and add Honors Sociology. [Parents: Feel free to add yourself to my notifications as well]

You will now receive all updates for this class—this includes homework, test, or other assignment reminders,
hints on what to study, and other relevant information. You can also message me using this app at any time.

Step 2: Both parents and students--Then, go to the Honors Sociology page on Canvas, and click on the Syllabus
button. You and your parent/guardian (TOGETHER!) need to complete and submit the Syllabus Form.

Course Overview:
Sociology covers information about how societies function, how they’re structured, and how they interact. It
includes components like familial and friend relationships, culture, and how political structures influence social
norms and expectations.

Tardies: You are considered late if you are not in the classroom OVER the threshold once the bell rings and
consequences are in accordance to Page High School’s procedures. Multiple tardies can result in a suspension.

Makeup Work Policy: If something was assigned the day you are absent, you have two additional days to
complete that assignment per day missed (up to 15 additional days if you have 7 or more absences). Projects,
tests, or any other assignment assigned prior to the absence will be due/completed on the date the student returns
to school. Late deductions will apply if the student does not submit an assignment the day returned, if the assignment
was assigned prior to the absence.

Late Work: Ten points will be deducted for each day an assignment is submitted late. A late penalty starts if an
assignment is not submitted when asked for. Each quarter, you’re allowed to turn in a max of 2
homework/classwork assignments up to 3 days late with no penalty. Following the three days, each day the
assignment is turned in late, it results in a 10-point deduction from the overall score of the assignment. These
two quarterly late passes do NOT apply to major assignments (such as projects, tests, or anything that is not
clearly identified in class as classwork or homework). NO late work will be accepted the week before the end of
the Grading Period.
Needed Materials: (Binders are not necessary—work will be stapled in spiral notebooks for ease)
Spiral Notebook (for notes) Headphones (that work with GCS designated laptop)
Pen/Pencil Laptop
Highlighters
Folder

Cell Phone/Electronics:
Phones and other electronic devices may be used before school, in the halls, or during lunch. Our goal is to allow
students the use of phones except during instructional times. Strict consequences for classrooms are in place to
protect instructional time. Electronic devices out during instructional time (unless authorized by me) will result in an
office referral—including headphones/ear buds/smart watches.

Honor Code Policy:

Page strives to maintain integrity within the student body at all times. Cheating and plagiarizing on any
assignment—from homework to tests—is strictly prohibited and will be dealt with swiftly and directly. Your work
is your own and not someone else’s. Your name is your honor. This includes, but is not limited to, cheating on
tests, using an unauthorized electronic device on an assessment, sharing answers, copying information from ANY
other source without citing it or without prior approval, copying from a student, allowing someone to copy
materials, using someone else’s work as your own, division of labor on assignments, buying research papers from
internet sources, telepathy, having other students do your work, telekinesis, etc. unless authorized to do so by
the teacher. Unless you are notified by Mrs. McGehee, you are NOT AUTHORIZED to collaborate with others or
use unauthorized sources. Students caught cheating will receive a ZERO on the assignment with no opportunity
to make up the work, any school consequences in alignment with Page procedures, and may result in your
immediate removal from the IB Program.

Grade Scale:
A: 90-100 C: 70-79 F: 0-59
B: 80-89 D: 60-69

See Your Child’s Grade: Parents and guardians may view a student’s grades by going to PowerSchool via Page’s
website. You will need to register if you have not already done so. Parents, please look at your child’s grades on a
regular basis, as I update grades weekly.

Grading Policy: I work on the point system. Students receive points for each assignment. Sample point ranges
are below:

Formal assessments/projects: 50-100 points

Quizzes: range from 10-25 points
All Other General In-Class Work, Homework, Discussion Boards, Padlets, etc.: 5-20 points

Therefore, if a student has earned 800 points out of a total of 1000 points possible on all assignments, the
student earned an 80% for this class. Should a student receive less than an 80% on a test or project have a one-
time opportunity to retake a different version of the test or resubmit the project. The highest score a student can
receive on the retake/resubmission is a 80%.
Classroom Wishlist: (You will be forever loved)
Tissues, Paper Towels, regular crayola markers, spare posterboard, and did I mention Tissues?

CLASS STRUCTURE
Formal Assessments/Projects
You will have formal assessments/tests or projects throughout the year to demonstrate what you’ve learned. You
will be evaluated with a rubric. It is important you ask questions in class if you don’t understand something—I am
ALWAYS happy to answer your questions! Projects are also used in place of a test to evaluate your understanding
of a topic. Please remember, if you make less than an 80% on a test or project, you may take a different version
of the test, or resubmit the project, for a maximum score of 80% on the retake/resubmission. This does not apply
to any other assignment or quiz.

Laptops:
It is imperative students bring their GCS assigned laptops to class every day. Students will use their laptops on a
regular basis to do assigned readings, independent/group assignments, etc. Notes should still be taken in a
notebook.

Homework:
You will have short homework and classwork assignments throughout the year.

Tutoring/Make-up:
Students should schedule a time to come before/after school for any tutoring or make-up work. I am almost
always here before and after school for any of your needs, so please feel free to arrange a time to come in at any
point throughout the year. Parents should request a parent-teacher conference through the guidance
department, with a guidance counselor or administrator present. Before/After school times are for students only.

Parent Contacts:
I send mass emails to keep parents “in the loop.” Parents and students should complete the online syllabus form
(found via Canvas) so parents are kept updated.

Parent-Teacher Conferences:
These must be scheduled through the front office and guidance with a minimum of 48 hours’ notice. I will make
every accommodation I can to meet with a parent as long as the time is available and advanced notice is given. I
cannot honor unannounced visits.
