Course learning outcome

At the end of this level (English Proficiency Level I), students will be able to communicate in everyday
situations with frequently used expressions and using elementary vocabulary. To use basic written
language for simple practical purposes. To understand the main point of short extracts in a limited
range of situations.

Grammar: Verb be (+) pronouns.

Objective: Use subject pronouns with the correct form of the verb ´be´ in the simple present.

• Verb To Be (+)
The verb to be is the most important verb in the English language. It is difficult to use
because it is an irregular verb in almost all of its forms. In the simple present tense, to be is
conjugated as follows:

Full form Contraction • Use capital I. I´m Pete. Not i´m.


I am Pete I´m Pete • You = singular and plural.
You are in level 1 You´re in level 1 • Use he for a man, she for a woman.
He is George He´s George • Use they for people and things.

1.3 Grammar: What`s your name?
Objective: Ask basic questions using ‘What´s your……?’
We use what’s your …? to ask for a name or a job. For example:

a: What`s your name? a: What`s your name?


b: My name is Alex. And you? b: I am Patricia. Nice to meet you!

a: What`s your job? a: What`s your name?

b: I am a school teacher b: My name is Willy.

We use question words to ask certain types of questions (question word questions). We often refer
to these words as WH words because they include the letters WH (for example Why, How)

WH questions ask for information. Here are the six questions and their answers:

Objective: Use the verb ´be´ in the negative form in the correct way.

• Negative statements
Put not after the verb to make negative sentences.
Full form Contraction French

Examples:

§ Mike isn’t from Argentina.
§ He isn’t French.
§ Interrogative statements

• In questions, put BE before you, he, etc.

Zoe: Hi. My name is Zoe. Zoe Thompson.
Kevin: Excuse me, could you spell it slowly?
Zoe: Of course. It is Zoe: Z-O-E and Thompson: T-H-O-M-P-S-O-N. What about you?
Kevin: Oh, my name is Kevin Cevallos, nice to meet you.
Zoe: Nice to meet you too, Kevin; but, I can’t understand your last name.
Kevin: It is CEVALLOS. C-E-V-A-L-L-O-S. It is a very common last name in this province.
Where are you from Zoe?
Zoe: I am from Canada. I am Canadian but I am visiting Ecuador because of an academic
exchange program.
Kevin: Wow, that’s amazing!
Zoe: Yes, it is. By the way, I would like to know where the Scholarship Department is. I am
looking for Mr. Naranjo. Could you help me, please?
Kevin: Mr. … what?
Zoe: Mr. Naranjo. N-A-R-A-N-J-O. Sorry, my Spanish is not so good.

Grammar: Possessive adjectives.
Objective: Use possessive adjectives such as ‘my’, ‘your’, etc.
Explanation

Possessive Adjective.

They are words that modify a noun to show a form of possession, a sense of belonging or ownership
to a specific person, animal or thing. The possessive adjectives that are used in the English language
are: my, your, our, its, her, his, and their; each one corresponds to a subject pronoun.

Grammar: A/an, plurals, this/that/these/those.

Objective: Use ‘a/an with single countable nouns.

Indefinite article

Objective: Use regular and irregular nouns in the plural form.
Explanation:

Plural of nouns.

1. To make regular nouns plural, just add -s to the end


book – books
dog – dogs
2. If the singular noun ends in -s, -o, -sh, -ch, -x, or -z, add -es to the end to make it plural
bus – buses watch – watches
potato – potatoes box – boxes
brush – wishes quiz – quizzes
3. If a singular noun ends in -y preceded by a consonant, change the -y by -i and add -es to make it
plural
baby – babies
dictionary – dictionaries
4. If a singular noun ends in -y preceded by a vowel, just add -s to make it plural

5. If a singular noun ends in -f or -fe, the -f is changed to -ve and add -s to make it plural

Demonstrative pronouns: This and That, These and Those
Demonstrative pronouns show a relationship with the item they are referring to. They refer to
distance of the object being described. They also match the subject described in number.
This is used to describe something that is close. It also describes something singular.
